Chapter 5

2023 Words
Layla's POV I loved standing outside of the house. Right on the cliff, looking out to the ocean that was in front of me. Wind blowing in my face. Man, was it a time to be alive. I looked to the forest that was behind me and heard a bunch of bunnies hopping around. Squirrels running about like they had no care in the world even though they ran from everything. The one thing I loved to listen to, was the chirping birds. They sound so happy and peaceful. The wind blew hard causing a scent to fill my nostrils. It made my skin shiver with delight. I took a step forward until my concentration was broken by the sound of my mother calling.  I smiled a soft smile after hearing my mother call my name from her garden. I ran over to it, happy to see the flowers she tended to. Her garden was like a second child to her. It made her more happy than she thought it would when my father gave it to her for a birthday present. I looked at her tending to the flowers in a distance and smiled my purely white teeth at how happy she looked.  "Mother!" I shouted with a wave and then continued running to her. She looked at me and returned my wave and walked over to the entrance of the garden. I looked at the white garden arch and to the bushes with flowers blooming from them. I softly glided my hands against the red roses first and moved onto the rainbow colored roses next.  Yeah, my mother had flowers for days. I mean the garden was like a small football field in a park for children. It was a lovely walk for clearing one's mind. And let me not get started about all the flowers in this garden. I'm talking roses of all different colors, even rainbow colored roses, tiger lilies, daisies, tulips, sunflowers and her favorites, a large patch just for orchids. The more you walk on the stone pavement, looking at flowers, you get the view of the large fountain in the middle of the garden. It was huge with water spitting angels. Toward the sitting area, you saw more flowers and a duck pond. The ducks were so cute to look at. Did I mention that she had my favorite fish in this garden too. Oh, yes she did. She had my koi fish in this garden. That was my private sitting area when I needed to clear my head. I loved her garden. It was amazing.  We sat there feeding the ducks at the duck pond while the maids served fresh cold cups of water. I enjoyed looking at the baby ducks and the mother duck swimming around happily. What I did not enjoy was the simple fact of multiple men in black walking around the garden, the yard, on the balcony that looks over the garden from my parents room. I huffed and jumped when my mom gently shoved me playfully.  "Mother, don't you feel uncomfortable with all the guards around 24/7?" I looked over to my mother who was taken back from the random question I gave her. She looked around to the men in black and then smiled her angelic smile at me.  "At first, I was highly uncomfortable. I truly hated it myself but then as time passed I truly got used to the fact they would be here for a long time and I would not be able to change it."  "Yeah but we can change it, mother... I think getting rid of them will-" "Don't change the rebel in you. It will only just make you stay who you are with no worries of someone crashing the party." I looked down with a guilty expression only to have my head raised seconds later.  "Don't feel bad about it. I was the same way with my father." "You were?!" I raised an eyebrow. My mother giggled and covered her mouth a bit.  "Yes sweetie. I was just the same as you. Constantly getting into fights with my mother about my freedom. Constantly sneaking out. The difference is, my father was on my side while I was growing up. When it came time for me to start dating an all... well that is a different story." "Will you tell it to me one day?" I said with a cheerful smile.  "It would be a long story but of course."  We laughed away and got up from feeding the ducks and started walking back to the house to meet up with my father. "Oh mom, I need to ask about a girls trip later on in the future."  "Sure honey. Please tell your father this time though."  Nero's POV I was watching my love stand by the cliff where she always goes on a Saturday morning.. The wind pushed my scent toward her and I soon met her gaze as she stared into the forest. My right ear twitched when her mother called her. I watched her run and it was a wonderful sight to my eyes. My tail swayed slowly and once she was out of my eye sight, I turned and took off into the forest. Past the forest, it was a large meadow. The wolves from the pack tend to come here for multiple occasions. One especially was to mate with their lover because of the moon light right above the meadow. Past the meadow was the pack house. Before the pack house was the medical wing. The pack doctor stays there.  I ran into the pack house and looked at the Beta that was waiting for me with clothes in his hand. He chuckled and turned his back to me as I shifted and threw on the clothes he had ready for me.  "Hey Lucas." I said making him turn back around to me.  "I see you have been busy Alpha. How is the watching going?"  "Painful I must say. Seeing our mate and only having a limited amount of contact with her is killing us." "Such troublesome for you." "You have no idea. What's been going on around here?" "Everyone is currently on guard. No threat, which is good news for us."  "Someone is keeping quiet. I wonder why.... I guess the threat of us being the strongest pack has finally crossed their minds." "Or they are planning something. Something we don't need happening."  As always, Lucas had a point. Could never let our guard down. Not even for a second. It's why we took the precautions that we took now to protect one of our own.  I walked deeper into the pack house to be greeted by a familiar face.  "Sara, your back already?" I asked as she looked over to me from her book.  She looked up at me and smiled.  "Hi brother. I got back not too long before you arrived." She walked over to me and gave me a tight embrace as if she hadn't met me yesterday in that school. "No wonder your scent was lingering in the air." "Don't judge me. I had to return to see my mate." She looked over to Lucas with a seductive smirk and I turned to see his eyes turning black.  "Get a room." I said a bit annoyed at the two of them.  It still shocked me when I found out my beta and little sister were mates. It honestly made me sick but she was happy and that is the one thing I promised our father before he left with my mother. It was lonely without them here but as the Alpha, I got to keep everyone in order.  "Brother, don't be mad at us. You finally introduced yourself to Layla, and she is most definitely your mate. The way she is acting now, it is only a matter of time before she finally shifts." Sara said, pushing me playfully. "I am trying to get her into the pack house before that problem comes." I said staying on track. "Then if that is the case.... I give it another month until she does because your scent is killing her right now. It is only her mind set that is blocking her. But I know for a fact her wolf is scratching at the barrier right now to get to you."  "This is... very interesting how it has not happened yet." Lucas spoke up with a tapping of his finger to his chin.  "She must have a strong will right now or a very hard barrier because her wolf should be out right now." Lucas looked at the both of us with a raised eyebrow.  "This is the case since she has been kept in the dark about this her whole life. It would only make sense that her wolf is not out right now. Just standing by waiting." Sara looked at us two while raising an eyebrow.  "A hard barrier would make more sense in this situation." I said, nodding my head.  "Let's go to the others and speak about everything." I said motioning to the other pack members.  We held a meeting with everyone. I never leave anyone in the dark. It was dishonest to me. I was informed about a lot of things. Humans were taking more deer and destroying the food source for the animals in the forest. We needed to do something before it was too late. I introduced them to the passing story that I constantly hear when I am in the town. Causing trouble for the humans to look elsewhere is good for us and for the animals.  The meeting was dragged on til the moon rose in the sky. Everyone said their goodbyes and all the pack members either returned to their mates, families, or just went to train and went on about their night.  I found my sister sleeping on Lucas lap like a little baby. She was smiling away in her sleep as Lucas rubbed her back slowly. His eyes were closed shut along with hers. I smiled at the view. Seeing my sister happy with someone I truly trust was luck to be told. I walked outside the pack house and caught sight of the moon. It was breathtaking. My concentration was broken when I caught Layla's scent in the air.  "She... shouldn't be outside..." I growled at a thought, I wished it never came into my mind.  "Go get her." Sara said behind me.  I turned to face my sister standing behind me with Lucas coming up behind her.  "Be safe, you hear me. I expect to see you in that school building." I said hugging my sister close.  "I will brother... Now go." She gently pushed me away from her and I took off running. I shifted to my wolf form breaking record time and raced off to the front of the forest.  I reached the middle section of the forest where Layla's scent was driving me crazy. You don't know how bad I wanted to make her mine but of course I had to be patient with it. I looked around to see her walking around with her red hoodie on and once again wiping tears from her face.  It saddened me when she cried. I couldn't do anything about it but it still pained me and my wolf. I stepped on a twig unwillingly and caught her eyes on mine.  "Hello... Who's there?" She said with a shaky voice. She looked in my direction and slowly walked forward until her movement came to a halt.  "I know you... are there... unless you want to get an ass whooping... come out." She said her voice getting angrier by each word said.   I looked at her eyes and I knew my eyes were shining through the bushes that I tried to hide behind. I took a step forward, letting my large body be revealed to her. She gasped and took a step back and couldn't believe her eyes. She gripped her right arm tightly and I calmly sat down on the ground.
