Her head was swirling with so many thoughts and emotions that she hadn’t even closed the door all the way when she changed her mind and marched right back out her door again. She needed to shift. She hadn’t shifted in so long and she felt like her wolf has been half asleep since she got here. It was a strange feeling and Ember didn’t like it. She now knew the dangers and her grandparents had forbidden her to leave the property, but if she just ran the perimeter she would be in view of the patrol the entire time. With her mind made up, she walked out the kitchen entrance quietly and made her way to the small side gate. She quickly took her clothes off in the shadows and left them in a neatly folded pile by the gate for when she got back. She stretched out her muscles and rolled her neck as she felt her bones snap and crack as they shifted into her wolf. She shook out her fur and finally felt whole once more. Her wolf let out an annoyed grumble when a scent caught her nose, she trotted over to her clothing pile and started sniffing the entire thing, fighting the urge to start rolling in it. Mate. She felt it! She finally felt it! Mate, mate, mate. She gave a silly little wolf dance that made her look like a puppy. Her Mates scent was all over her clothes! Torin had been holding her close when he gave her a hug and kiss goodnight. She fought the urge to run straight to his room and claim him, she needed to run. She took off at full speed, her happiness taking over as she forgot all about her self-made promise to stay along the perimeter. The feeling of the dirt under her paws and the wind flowing through her fur felt incredible after so long stuck inside the grounds. She looked up and saw a full moon beaming down on her. Maybe the goddess had been upset at her for neglecting her wolf and decided to forgive her when she finally shifted under this beautiful full moon. She let out a happy howl as she tore through the forest.
She came upon a quiet stream that led to a small waterfall only about 10 feet high flowing from a crack in the side of a cliff. She remembered finding this spot last summer when she was mad at Hunter for beating her in the ring in front of Caleb. She had felt angry and embarrassed and took off into the woods. Her wolf must have pulled it from her memory. It was a quiet peaceful place, with a small pool at the bottom of the waterfall just big enough for her to lay beside and take a drink as she listened to the water flow. Her wolf let out a sigh as she closed her eyes and let the soft trickle of the water settle her mind and thoughts.
She hadn’t been laying beside the pool for very long when she heard a twig snap somewhere behind her. Looking around carefully she peered into the woods. There, did she just see movement by that tree? Another snap came from the other side of the pool, she whipped her head in that direction and saw another quick movement. She stood up and placed the waterfall and cliff to her back as she looked around her. Four vampires seemed to melt out of the woods and into the clearing, their pale skin almost glowing in the moonlight as their eyes glowed a deep red. What are they doing here? I am nowhere near the portal. Her wolf let out a low warning growl and she snarled as one came a little too close. She snapped her jaws at him as he lunged forward, she caught his hand in her teeth and shook as hard as she could knocking him into the second one trying to sneak around to her left. They slammed into one another but recovered in the blink of an eye, Ember only had a moment to check her surroundings again.
The other two had kept a bit further back, watching. One of them pulled out his phone and held it up as if taking a picture. She snarled as the first two vampires attacked her again at the same time. She crouched down low grabbing one by the back of his leg, she felt her teeth sink deep into the muscles and she ripped as hard as she could, crippling his leg as the other jumped on her back, his mistake. She whipped around and threw herself as hard as she could against the cliff wall and heard a sickening crack as his head met with rock. She shook him off and he crumpled down behind her. The first one was back on his feet but limping as blood poured down his wounded leg. He came at her slowly this time, he had a silver-bladed dagger out and they watched each other carefully. She took a moment to glance at the other two, they were watching their phone as if waiting for a message. She heard the ding.
“She’s the one.” The vampire with the phone yelled out as the vampire with the blade swung at her. She jumped to the side and turned to rip at his other leg when she felt a sting in her back followed quickly by two more as she swung her head quickly looking around. The one with a blade was meant to be a distraction, she had been hit with a dart gun. She realized too late that it was all set up. Ember took off running in the opposite direction but it wasn’t long before she could feel her limbs starting to get heavy. She tried to fight off the wooziness as she shook her head to clear it, pushing to go faster. She felt another sting as a fourth dart hit her and her wolf let out a last angry growl as she turned to try and see her attackers. They started to surround her, waiting for whatever was in those darts to kick in. Ember’s vision went black as the last of her strength drained and she dropped to the ground.
