Silenced

Ember showered quickly, unable to stop from thinking about the incredible kiss she had shared with Torin in the hall. Caleb’s kisses have been wonderful but they didn’t compare to Torin’s. The sparks and tingles when they touched were amazing and the kiss she felt through her entire being. Now she just needed her wolf to catch up with the program. We can feel everything we need too, just claim him already! She thought to her wolf, she almost thought she felt a grumble in response as if her wolf was disturbed from a slumber. She could picture in her mind a wolf making the noise and rolling over and going back to sleep. Perhaps she needed to shift. It had been almost a month since she had last shifted, with the move and packing and graduation, then the ball and now everything else. Maybe her wolf was feeling distant because of that? She got out and squeezed her hair in the towel before quickly braiding it not wanting to spend forever with wet hair. She got dressed quickly and put on a bit of eyeliner and mascara before joining Torin in her main living space. When she opened the door she saw him looking around her room, with curiosity. “Whatcha looking for?” She asked, and he looked up from her desk and gave her a big warm smile. “Just trying to learn a bit more about my beautiful Fated. Is this your twin brother?” He picked up the picture she had of her, Hunter, and Isla in their graduation gowns. The frame had been bedazzled by Isla and was a going-away present. “Yes, and his mate, our best friend, Isla.” She smiled and let out a light laugh, “Isla decorated the frame.” “It’s lovely. You must miss them?” “Only a little. This is the longest I have been away from my twin since being born. But things have been interesting enough here to keep my mind from it.” She laughed at her understatement. Torin laughed and put the frame back down before reaching out and pulling her into his embrace. “Oh, I can think of many ways to keep your mind busy.” He rubbed his nose against hers making her giggle before kissing her sweetly, “like this.” He said against her lips then kissed her again, “and this,” he kissed her jawline and Ember gasped a little at the sensations his lips were causing against her skin, then he kissed her neck down to her marking spot and she felt her wolf stir again as butterflies exploded in her stomach causing her to gasp. Would he even be able to give her a mark? The thought popped into her head before she shook it and realized they really should get going the others would be waiting for them soon. “Torin, we need to get downstairs.” She mumbled breathlessly as he gave her another sweet kiss on her neck. “I know, I just wanted to let you know I am here for anything you need, including distractions.” He leaned back without letting go and winked at her before giving her one last kiss on the lips. “All right, lead the way beautiful. Let’s go get our hands dirty.” They walked together down to the cells. Of course, with their packhouse being an ancient castle the cells were in the original dungeons. They had been updated to hold both magical and supernatural creatures though and were almost as state of the art as her families back at Blue Lake. Albwin was already there and he raised an eyebrow at Torin and Ember as they arrived together. “Is Caleb here yet?” Ember asked ignoring the unasked question in his eyes for now. “I don’t believe Caleb left. I’ve been down here pretty much the entire time since I didn’t need to change or shower. But he went in and didn't wait for me to follow. So I have been waiting out here.” Albwin shrugged and crossed his arms leaning back against the wall. “Well let’s go in then,” she put in her passcode to the locked door and it beeped with a green light letting them in. They walked in to find Caleb backhanding the vampire who looked bloody and beaten. “Caleb, you were supposed to wait for us. We are a team.” Ember said sternly as she walked up beside him. She looked at the vampire, he was handcuffed to a metal chair beside a table which had a UV light and silver knives. “What’s going on?” “The bastard refuses to talk. He has said nothing. I waited for a time but I thought I could get him warmed up. I don’t think you should be here for this anyways. It’s not right for the Luna to take part in… questioning.” Caleb added the last part in a softer tone as he looked up at Ember. His eyes were soft as he gazed at her but when he caught a whiff of her scent he smelled Torin’s mingled in it, and his eyes flashed angrily. He turned back to the vampire and backhanded him again. “Although I guess the Luna had other, more pressing, things to get done. Are you clean enough now?” He asked her sarcastically shooting a glare in Torin’s direction. Ember frowned at him. “Caleb that has nothing to do with the mission, right now we need to focus and find out what he knows. You are not helping if you're just sitting here hitting him. Back off and go cool down.” She put her hand on his arm and he growled and shook her off. “Maybe you should be more focused, instead of leading everybody on.” Caleb snarled at her, then ran his hands through his hair as he paced taking deep breaths. He stepped back and glared his eyes flashing menacingly. Ember gave him a hurt look at his harsh words but said nothing. She turned to the vampire and saw he was grinning. “What do you find so funny?” She asked him. “Trouble in paradise wolfie?” The vampire grated out before spitting some blood on the floor by her feet. “You’re one to talk. Speaking of which, how about we have a nice conversation, shall we? You tell me some things I want to know. I won't let Caleb hit you anymore?” Ember schooled her face into a comfortable grin, just like she was taught. Mike told her smiling made people uneasy during questioning. The vampire laughed in her face. “The only thing I have to say to any of you is watch your backs. You have no idea what’s happening.” He started to laugh and Caleb came forward again and picked up a silver knife and jammed it into the vampire’s thigh making him yell out. “Do you really think you are in the position to make threats?” Torin said calmly from beside Ember. Ember shook her head as Caleb pulled out the knife making the vampire flinch and hiss through his teeth. His eyes were red from the pain. “Would you like another one in the other leg? I am sure Caleb would be more than happy to oblige.” Ember sighed, she really didn’t like this but knew they needed information. “It wasn’t a threat. It was a warning. Be careful of who you trust, sweetheart.” The vampire blew her a kiss and Caleb growled and punched him in the face. He laughed again spitting out more blood. “I think I have had enough.” He said and before anyone could move he whispered something and a small black sparkling rope of mist started to slither around his neck. “It’s a silencing spell, he’s killing himself!” Ember shouted but there was nothing they could do, it was too late as he took his last breath. “s**t,” Ember swore as she clenched her fists. “We should have had him checked for charms, and had him in one of the magicked rooms.” She turned to Caleb, “why didn’t you wait for us? We need to work together. This isn’t going anywhere if we fight amongst ourselves. Enough is enough.” She looked around the room thinking. Where were the other guards? They didn't have anyone in the cells but there was usually at least one guard stationed down there, always ready in case they were needed. “Where is the guard that's supposed to be on duty tonight?” “He went on his break and I said it was fine since I was here,” Caleb answered. “Did you at least check this guy for his phone? We can try to have it traced or hack it to see if there is any info on it?” Ember asked as she stepped towards him to check his pockets. She was feeling pissed, she was doing a terrible job with her first mission. She didn’t want to disappoint her grandfather or those who trained her back home. “He didn’t have a phone. Did you leave it in the alley after nabbing him?” Caleb asked with a sour tone. Ember thought back, there was nothing on the ground was there? Did she miss something as important as that? No, it wasn’t there she would have seen it on the ground. He must have put it in a pocket. She went through his pockets searching him thoroughly. But she came up empty-handed. She swore again. “Can we get a guard in here to help clean this up? Then I would like us to all go back to our meeting room. We need to talk.” Ember headed towards the door as Caleb linked the guard back and they followed her out.
