The Fifth Name

Mira didn't move. For several seconds, nobody did. Noah's words remained suspended in the classroom. The one where we all died. Rhea was the first to speak. "That's not funny." Noah didn't smile. "I'm not joking." Sophie looked at the empty desk. Theo's desk. Except there was no longer anything on it. No books. No notebook. No pen. Not even a scratch where someone had dragged a chair across the floor. It was as though the desk had never belonged to anyone. Mira looked at Professor Vale. He was still behind his desk. Still watching them. His expression was impossible to read. "Professor," she said carefully. He looked at her. "Yes?" "Do you remember Theo?" There was a long silence. "No." Mira's stomach tightened. "But he was sitting there." "I don't know who you're referring to." Rhea stepped forward. "We all saw him." Professor Vale's eyes moved across the five students. "Perhaps you're confused." "No," Rhea said. Her voice was sharper now. "We're not." Professor Vale didn't argue. He simply picked up his books. "Your next class begins in seven minutes." Mira stared at him. "That's it?" He paused. "What would you like me to do?" "Find Theo." Professor Vale looked at her. For the briefest moment, something flickered in his eyes. Fear. Then it disappeared. "I suggest you attend your next class." He walked past them. Nobody moved. The classroom door closed behind him. Mira stared at it. "He knows." Sophie whispered, "I think so too." Rhea crossed her arms. "Then why is he pretending he doesn't?" Noah answered from behind them. "Because he's afraid." Everyone looked at him. Rhea frowned. "Of what?" Noah looked at the closed door. "Us.” The five students left the classroom together. It felt strange. They had never walked together before. Mira, Sophie, Rhea, Eli and Noah. Five people who barely knew one another. And one empty space between them where Theo should have been. They reached the main corridor. Students rushed past them toward their next classes. Nobody seemed to notice anything unusual. Mira stopped. "Wait." The others turned. "Does anyone remember what Theo looked like?" Sophie frowned. "Of course." But when she tried to describe him, she stopped. "Brown hair." Rhea nodded. "Glasses." "No," Eli said. "He didn't wear glasses." They looked at each other. Sophie frowned. "Are you sure?" Eli didn't answer. Mira closed her eyes. She tried to picture Theo. His face came easily. His voice. His quiet smile. The way he sat near the window. The way he held his pen. But when she tried to remember the color of his eyes— Nothing. The memory blurred. Like someone had poured water over it. Mira opened her eyes. "I can't remember." Rhea's expression changed. "Me neither." Sophie looked frightened. "Neither can I." Eli looked toward Noah. "What about you?" Noah stared at the floor. "I remember." Mira stepped closer. "What?" "Everything." "Then tell us." Noah hesitated. "He had dark eyes." Mira frowned. "No." Noah looked at her. "They were green." Mira's heart skipped. Green. She remembered them now. Theo's eyes had been green. Bright green. But the memory had returned so suddenly that it didn't feel like remembering. It felt like something had been handed back to her. She stepped away. Noah noticed. "You felt it." "What?" "The memory." Mira stared at him. "How did you know?" "Because I saw it happen." Rhea folded her arms. "Okay, this is getting creepy." Noah looked at her. "It gets worse." They found an empty study room on the third floor. Sophie closed the door. Rhea checked the hallway. Eli stood near the window. Noah remained by the door. Mira placed her notebook on the table. "We need to figure out what happened." Rhea sat down. "Agreed." Sophie nodded. "Where do we start?" Noah answered immediately. "With the Academy records." Mira looked at him. "You said the Academy erased Theo." "Yes." "Then there should be a record somewhere." "There should." "But there isn't?" "No." Rhea frowned. "Then how do we find him?" Noah looked at her. "That's the problem." Eli stepped forward. "Unless someone remembers." Noah looked at him. Eli's voice was calm. "You said the Academy erased him from everyone's memory." "Most people's." "So someone might still remember." Noah didn't answer. Mira looked at Eli. "Your ability." Eli froze. He hadn't told them about it. Mira immediately realized she'd said too much. Sophie looked between them. "What ability?" Eli stared at Mira. "How do you know?" Mira hesitated. "I don't." Noah's eyes narrowed. "You do." Mira looked at him. "How?" "I don't know yet." The room went silent. Rhea looked at Eli. "What can you do?" Eli looked uncomfortable. "I can feel things." "Things?" "Emotions." Sophie blinked. "From people?" "People. Objects. Places." Rhea leaned back. "That's actually really cool." "It's not." Eli looked at his hands. "Sometimes I don't know if what I'm feeling belongs to me." Mira understood. Maybe that was why she had felt his loneliness earlier. Maybe she hadn't imagined it. Noah looked away. For some reason, he seemed uncomfortable hearing Eli explain his ability. Mira noticed. She filed it away. Eli walked toward the empty desk. There was nothing there. "Give me something that belonged to Theo." Noah reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small silver pen. Everyone stared. "Where did you get that?" Noah looked at it. "Theo gave it to me." Eli's expression changed. "You remember?" "Yes." "Then why didn't you say anything?" "Because I didn't know if I could trust my memory." Eli stepped closer. "You don't trust your own memory?" "No." "Why?" Noah looked directly at him. "Because the last time I trusted it, I lost you." The room became completely silent. Eli's face changed. Neither spoke. Rhea slowly looked at Sophie. Sophie looked back. Mira felt like she'd accidentally walked into a conversation that had started years before she existed. Noah placed the pen on the table. Eli reached for it. The moment his fingers touched the metal— He gasped. His eyes widened. Mira grabbed his arm. "Eli?" He didn't answer. His breathing became faster. "What do you see?" Eli's eyes remained closed. "I can hear him." "Who?" "Theo." Everyone froze. Eli whispered: "He's scared." Then he opened his eyes. "He keeps saying one thing." Mira's heart pounded. "What?" Eli looked at them. "He says..." He swallowed. "Find the fifth name." Silence. Rhea frowned. "Fifth name?" Noah immediately grabbed the pen. "Eli, what else did you see?" "Nothing." "You're lying." "I'm not." "You are." Noah stepped closer. Eli pushed him back. "Don't." Noah stopped. For a second, the tension between them was almost unbearable. Then Noah whispered: "You're still doing it." "Doing what?" "Protecting everyone except yourself." Eli stared at him. "And you're still pretending you don't care." Noah looked away. Mira stepped between them. "Enough." Both boys went silent. Mira turned toward the notebook. "Fifth name." She wrote the names down. Mira Voss. Elias Vale. Sophie Lane. Rhea Morgan. She stopped. There were supposed to be six. But Theo's name had disappeared. She looked at Noah. "What comes after Rhea?" Noah didn't answer. Mira stared at the empty space. Then she realized. The fifth name wasn't Theo. It was someone else. Someone they hadn't met yet. Someone the Academy hadn't erased. Someone who was still walking through its halls. Mira whispered: "There's another person." Noah's expression changed. "Yes." "Who?" He looked at the five of them. "I don't know." The door suddenly opened. Professor Vale stood outside. Everyone froze. He looked at the notebook. Then at Noah. Then at Eli. His expression changed. "You found it." Mira stood. "Found what?" Professor Vale didn't answer. He looked directly at Noah. "How much do you remember?" Noah's voic e was quiet. "Enough." Professor Vale closed his eyes. "Then we're already too late." He walked into the room and shut the door behind him. Mira stared at him. "What are you talking about?" Professor Vale looked at the five students. "Five names." He placed his hand on the table. "You were never supposed to find the fifth."
