Chapter One

Amelia pov "Congratulations, ma, you are pregnant," the doctor said with a wide smile, stretching forth her hands to give me the pregnancy test. My eyes widened as I stared at the text results, which came back positive. I was pregnant, tears welled up in my eyes as an overwhelming feeling filled me.. To some people, this would be just a normal story. But to a woman whose husband looked her in the eye and called her barren, this was a breakthrough for me. It would show the world, show my mother-in-law that I was not barren, and maybe this will gain my husband's love back. I thanked the blonde doctor for this great news and went home. It was already six and Daniel was not yet awake. Could he be spending time with someone else? Because he has been coming home late, sometimes drunk, but I have never caught him with any signs of cheating, his phone has no hidden message, and he has shown no signs. I shook the thought off. No, Daniel would not do this to me. He loves me. If he loves you, why has he kept you a secret for five years? Another thought intruded. But he said it was necessary, the world does not need to know he is married yet, the world would know at the right time, and I am sure that now that he knows I am pregnant. He would want to carry me around like a gold medal. Pushing the thought aside, I rushed into the kitchen and prepared his best soup for him, put on a lingerie with a heavily sprayed perfume, and sat down waiting for him to come. Occasionally, my eyes would wander from his food to the pregnancy test that was by the side, and then to my womb that was now carrying his child. Time passed so slowly, but he did not show up, six, seven, then eight. With each passing hour, the hope of his coming back by this time got slimmer. Maybe I should just go to bed and sleep. When he comes back, I will let him know. As if on cue, my phone beeped with a message from my loving husband. "I will not be coming back today. Don't wait for me” My grip tightened around the phone as I stared at it with a heavy heart. Just like that. No explanation. No apology. Should I call him and ask him why? No, he would accuse me of not trusting him, and the least thing I would want to do is annoy him. So I sat back and drank my chicken soup on my own. It has not been up to an hour since he texted me that Becky, my best friend, called me. "Amelia, where the hell are you?" she barked through the phone. I sighed, "What is it, Becky?" " I told you, didn't I. I told you that Daniel did not like you. That he had no feelings for you. A man who loves his wife would not marry her and hide her for five good years, but you did not listen to me. You said I just hate him, blah, blah, blah, and even after I warned you, you gave your trust fund to him to build his so-called empire, and he… ugh!" I rolled my eyes. Becky had always hated Daniel. I don't even know why, but she said he was not a good person and has had a beef with him ever since he came into my life. And she always found a way to make him look bad. Like telling me that she saw him talking to some girl in a café, or that she saw some girl grinding on him in the club, her last call was that she saw him talking to my family lawyer, and that he wants to take my inheritance. I just ignored her because there is no way Daniel would want to take my inheritance when he has his own money, or hook up with some girl in a club. Daniel is your typical nerd. He doesn't even know his way to a club. "What happened? What did he do this time?" I asked. "Ohh, you don't know' she asked, her voice cracking. "Your husband had just announced to the whole wide world that he is getting married to Ashley Baker, his ex." My heart dropped immediately. No, this can't be. He would never do that to me. He loves me, and Ashley broke his heart and got married to a seventy-year-old man. I chuckled a little bit to ease the tension, even though my hands had begun to tremble. "Is this some joke? Huh, Becky, is this one of your suspicions?" I asked. Her laughter rang from the other side, "suspicion?" she asked and laughed again. "Amelia, this is real. Turn your TV on, the news is all over. He is set to marry Ashley Bakers, and Ashley is two months pregnant with…” I cut the call immediately, shaking my head as I rushed to turn on the TV, my heavy heart beating with anticipation as I prayed silently. Lord, please don't let this be true. Immediately, I turned the TV on, the first headline that appeared on the news was "multi-billionaire, Daniel Forbes set to marry his one true love, and award-winning model. Ashley Bakers." I had not been able to get over the first news when the second headline followed. " he had just informed us at his engagement party that she is expecting his child." I turned off the TV almost immediately, my shoulders falling as tears flowed from my eyes, the news replaying in my head on repeat, my husband holding Ashley in public while I, his wife, who was currently pregnant with his child, the wife who he had hidden for so many years, sat at home, crying. Where did I go wrong? How did it happen? I am not the first woman to be unable to give birth for five years. Men don't walk away from marriage because of that. Besides, he always assured me that he would be by my side. How did it happen that he got Ashley pregnant before he got his wife pregnant? Why the hell does the world have to be so harsh to me? I lost my grandmother and the only surviving family member two months ago, and then my husband engaged his first love, two days after I transferred my trust fund to his name for a project he was going to start. I raised my hands and stared at the ordinary ring that he had gotten for a hundred dollars; it suddenly felt like a very heavy load; everything felt heavy. My eyes scanned the whole room as the itching urge came to destroy something, break something, break someone. Make him feel the pain he had caused me. I rushed toward the TV and removed it from the wall, lifted it high, and as a loud, painful, gut-rending scream left my throat, I threw it on the ground, looking at the broken piece, the plates on the dining table were next. All our memories together flooded my head, and the anger, the painful stab of betrayal filled me more. How could he feel like he could use me for five years, sleep with me whenever he liked, and still go ahead to marry Ashley, the same woman who left him a year back? By the time I was done, there was no single place that wasn't filled with broken bottles, yet I walked on it with my bare foot, and the worst thing is that it felt like it was nothing; my whole body had become numb. I sucked in a deep breath, changed into trousers and a white shirt, and then I took our little marriage frame, which he had only put in the bedroom, the pregnancy test, and drove away. To tell the whole world what a horrible man Daniel Forbes was.
