12 THE RESISTANCE

1976 Words
The warehouse had been silent before C.Y. entered. Now it felt alive. People moved between tables covered with laptops, maps, communication equipment, medical supplies, weapons, and stacks of documents. There were no uniforms. No official insignias. No government banners. Just people who had lost something to the Directorate. C.Y. stood near the center of the room, trying to understand what he'd walked into. Maya remained beside him. Elias leaned against a concrete pillar, watching everyone. The older woman who had spoken to C.Y. approached them. "My name is Elena Ward." C.Y. nodded. "C.Y." "I know." He raised an eyebrow. "Everyone seems to." Elena smiled faintly. "Your reputation reached places you were never supposed to know existed." C.Y. looked around. "How many people are here?" "Forty-three." "That's it?" "For this location." C.Y. frowned. Elena continued. "We're not an army." "Then what are you?" She looked around the warehouse. "Survivors." That answer stayed with him. Survivors. Not heroes. Not soldiers. People who had survived the Directorate. C.Y. looked at one of the tables. A photograph caught his attention. A young man. Beside it was another photograph. And another. He realized what they were. Missing people. Dead people. People whose lives had been destroyed by the organization he had once worked for. Maya noticed his expression. "You okay?" C.Y. nodded. "Yeah." But he wasn't. He picked up one photograph. "Who was he?" Elena looked at it. "Daniel Reyes." "Agent?" "Police officer." "What happened?" "He discovered a Directorate operation inside his city." C.Y. waited. "They killed his entire team." He slowly placed the photograph back. "Why haven't the authorities stopped them?" Elena gave him a tired smile. "Because the authorities don't know where the Directorate ends and the government begins." C.Y. looked at her. "What?" "The Directorate has people everywhere." She pointed around the warehouse. "Government offices. Military units. Intelligence agencies. Police departments." Then she looked directly at him. "That's why nobody has been able to destroy them." C.Y. clenched his jaw. "So how do we?" Elena smiled. "That's why you're here." --- A large screen turned on. A map appeared. The Directorate headquarters was displayed in the center. C.Y. studied it. "That's the main building?" Elena nodded. "Officially, it's a government intelligence complex." "Unofficially?" "The heart of the Directorate." Maya moved closer. "How many people are inside?" "Unknown." "Security?" "Extreme." C.Y. looked at Elias. "You've been inside." "Once." "How long ago?" "Eight years." C.Y. looked back at the map. "Then you won't know the current layout." "No." Elena pressed another button. Several underground levels appeared. C.Y.'s eyes narrowed. "What's that?" "The part nobody knows about." Maya studied it. "There are five underground floors." Elena nodded. "The official building has three." "So the Directorate built two secret levels." "Three." C.Y. looked at her. "Three?" Elena zoomed in. A hidden level appeared. LEVEL -6 No details. No rooms. No labels. Just one designation. VENOM CORE. C.Y. stared. "That's what they were talking about." Elias stepped closer. "Yes." "What is it?" "I don't know." "You expect me to believe that?" "I was never allowed near it." C.Y. looked at Elena. "How do you know about it?" She hesitated. "We had someone inside." "Had?" Elena's expression changed. "They were discovered." C.Y. understood. "Dead?" "Yes." The room became quiet. C.Y. looked at the map again. "Then we find someone else." Elena shook her head. "No." "Why?" "Because the person who can get us into Level -6 isn't inside the Directorate anymore." C.Y. looked at her. "Who?" Elena pressed a button. A photograph appeared. C.Y. stared. He recognized the face. Daniel. The man who had recruited him. The man who had confronted him at the original facility. "The guy who was with us?" "Yes." C.Y. frowned. "He's alive?" Elena nodded. "Somewhere." "Where?" "We don't know." C.Y. stared at the screen. "Then we find him." --- Meanwhile, three floors beneath the Directorate headquarters... Daniel stood inside a dark room. His hands were restrained behind his back. Two agents stood on either side of him. Mr. Confidence sat across the table. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Mr. Confidence placed a photograph on the table. C.Y. Daniel looked at it. "He found the resistance." Mr. Confidence nodded. "Yes." "He'll come for his family." "I know." Daniel looked at him. "Then why are you letting him?" Mr. Confidence smiled. "Because every step he takes brings him closer." "Closer to what?" Mr. Confidence leaned back. "The truth." Daniel frowned. "You really think he'll accept it?" "No." "Then why?" Mr. Confidence's smile disappeared. "Because he doesn't have to accept it." Daniel looked at him. "He only has to activate it." Silence. Daniel's expression changed. "You're serious." "Completely." "Then what happens?" Mr. Confidence looked toward the observation window. "Everything changes." --- Back at the warehouse, C.Y. was training. Not fighting. Training. Elena had introduced him to one of the resistance's best instructors. His name was Marcus Reed. He was a former military combat specialist who had spent twelve years working against the Directorate. Marcus studied C.Y. carefully. "You rely too much on instinct." C.Y. frowned. "My instinct kept me alive." "Your instinct also got you captured twice." Maya, watching nearby, smiled. C.Y. glanced at her. "You're enjoying this." "A little." Marcus threw a training knife toward C.Y. C.Y. caught it. Marcus nodded. "Again." Another knife. C.Y. caught it. "Again." Another. C.Y. caught it. Marcus suddenly moved. C.Y. reacted. He blocked. Marcus stopped. "Better." C.Y. lowered his hands. "What's the point?" Marcus walked toward him. "The Directorate trained you to react." "So?" "They taught you how to survive their attacks." He tapped C.Y.'s chest. "I'm teaching you how to predict the person behind them." C.Y. thought about it. Marcus continued. "An assassin looks at the weapon." "A fighter looks at the body." "A strategist looks at the battlefield." He stepped back. "The best fighters?" C.Y. waited. "They look at the decision before it happens." Marcus attacked. C.Y. moved. He blocked. Marcus changed direction. C.Y. followed. Marcus feinted. C.Y. didn't react. Marcus stopped. "Good." C.Y. smiled. "Finally." Marcus shook his head. "Don't celebrate." He attacked again. C.Y. barely avoided the strike. Marcus swept his leg. C.Y. fell. The room laughed. Maya covered her mouth. C.Y. looked at her. "You promised not to laugh." "I promised nothing." Marcus extended a hand. C.Y. grabbed it. Marcus pulled him up. "You're talented." "Thank you." "But you're angry." C.Y.'s expression changed. Marcus continued. "Anger makes you predictable." C.Y. looked away. "I'm handling it." "No." Marcus pointed toward the training floor. "You're hiding it." C.Y. said nothing. Marcus lowered his voice. "Revenge can be useful." C.Y. looked at him. "But if revenge becomes the reason you fight..." Marcus paused. "...someone else controls you." C.Y. understood. Mr. Confidence wanted him angry. Wanted him desperate. Wanted him to become exactly what the Directorate had designed. He couldn't give them that. --- Later that evening, C.Y. sat alone on the roof. The city stretched beneath him. Maya climbed the stairs. She found him sitting against the wall. "You disappeared." "Needed air." She sat beside him. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Maya handed him a cup. "Coffee." C.Y. took it. "Thanks." She looked at the city. "You've changed." "Since when?" "Since we met." C.Y. smiled. "That sounds bad." "It isn't." She looked at him. "You're quieter." "I have a lot to think about." "Your family?" "Always." Maya nodded. "And your father." C.Y. stared at his cup. "I spent my whole life wondering why he left." Maya remained silent. "Now I know." He looked at her. "He didn't leave." She nodded. "He was taken." "Yeah." C.Y. looked toward the horizon. "I hate them." Maya gently touched his hand. "That's okay." He looked at her. "But don't let them become your entire life." C.Y. smiled faintly. "You're becoming a motivational speaker." "Someone has to keep you sane." He laughed. For a moment, the weight disappeared. Then Maya leaned her head against his shoulder. C.Y. froze slightly. She noticed. "What?" "Nothing." "You look terrified." "I'm not." "Sure." He smiled. Neither moved. They stayed there, watching the city. Neither said what they were thinking. Neither needed to. --- The next morning, Elena called everyone into the main room. "We found him." C.Y. immediately stood. "Daniel?" Elena nodded. A location appeared on the screen. An old hotel outside the city. C.Y. grabbed his jacket. "We go now." Marcus stopped him. "No." C.Y. turned. "Why?" "Because that's what they want." Elena nodded. "The location was intentionally leaked." C.Y. frowned. "Then it's a trap." "Probably." "So?" Marcus looked at him. "We use the trap." C.Y. smiled. "Now you're speaking my language." --- Two hours later, C.Y., Maya, Elias, and Marcus approached the hotel. It looked abandoned. Exactly like the original facility. C.Y. immediately noticed something. "Too quiet." Marcus nodded. "Good." Maya checked her equipment. "Signals are blocked." Elias looked at the building. "They're expecting us." C.Y. stepped forward. "Then let's disappoint them." They entered. The lobby was empty. No furniture. No lights. No people. C.Y. looked around. "This is definitely a trap." Marcus smiled. "Good observation." They reached the elevator. The doors opened automatically. Nobody pressed anything. Maya frowned. "Which floor?" The elevator moved. C.Y. looked at the display. B1. Then: B2. Then: B3. Then: B4. The elevator continued. C.Y. looked at Elias. "You said there were five underground levels." Elias nodded. "Officially." The display changed. B5. Then: B6. The elevator stopped. The doors opened. A massive underground facility stretched before them. C.Y. stared. "This isn't a hotel." Elias shook his head. "No." Marcus raised his weapon. "It's another Directorate facility." A voice came through the speakers. "Welcome, C.Y." C.Y. looked around. Mr. Confidence. "Did you really think I'd make it this easy?" C.Y. stepped forward. "Where's Daniel?" A light turned on. Daniel stood behind a glass wall. He was injured. But alive. C.Y. looked at him. "Daniel." Daniel looked back. "C.Y." "What did they do to you?" Daniel shook his head. "Doesn't matter." C.Y. approached the glass. "Where's my family?" Daniel's expression changed. "They're alive." "Where?" Daniel looked toward the ceiling. "Level -6." C.Y. froze. "We're on -6." Daniel nodded. "Exactly." C.Y. looked around. "This entire place..." Daniel interrupted. "Isn't a prison." C.Y. frowned. "Then what?" Daniel looked directly at him. "You're standing inside the first active Venom facility." Elias's expression hardened. "No." Daniel nodded. "Yes." The lights turned on. Thousands of screens activated around them. Every screen showed the same image. A giant black symbol. A snake wrapped around a human spine. C.Y. stared. Then a voice came from the speakers. Mr. Confidence. "Welcome to the birthplace of VENOM." The floor beneath them suddenly locked. Doors slammed shut. Marcus immediately moved toward the exit. "Trapped." C.Y. looked at Daniel. "You knew." Daniel nodded. "I tried to warn you." C.Y. clenched his fists. "Then tell me how to get out." Daniel looked at him. "I can't." "Why?" "Because I'm not the one who brought you here." C.Y. stared. "Then who did?" Daniel looked at the screens. A new video appeared. C.Y.'s mother. She was standing inside the facility. But this footage wasn't old. It was recent. She looked directly at the camera. And said something that made C.Y.'s blood run cold. "Cyril..." She paused. "If you're seeing this..." Her eyes filled with tears. "...then they finally brought you home." The recording ended. C.Y. stared at the screen. Maya stepped beside him. "What does she mean?" C.Y. didn't answer. Elias looked toward the darkness beyond the chamber. Then he whispered: "They didn't bring us here to kill us." Marcus looked at him. "Then why?" Elias stared at C.Y. "Because this is where they created him." C.Y. looked around. "What?" Elias pointed toward a massive steel door. Behind it was a chamber marked: SUBJECT 20 — ORIGIN The door unlocked. Slowly. C.Y. stared into the darkness. And somewhere beyond it... a machine began to power up. TO BE CONTINUED...
