6 THE UNLEASHING

1915 Words
The room was silent. Not peaceful. Not calm. Silent in the way a battlefield becomes silent after everyone realizes something has gone terribly wrong. C.Y. stood in the middle of the training chamber. Around him, several Directorate operatives lay scattered across the floor, unable to continue. His breathing was heavy. His fists were bruised. His tactical jacket was torn. But he was still standing. Above him, the red emergency lights continued flashing. PHASE TWO: COMPLETE. Behind the reinforced observation glass, nobody spoke. Scientists stared at their monitors. Agents stared at C.Y. Mr. Confidence stood motionless. For the first time since C.Y. had met him, the man looked uncertain. C.Y. looked toward the glass. He couldn't see anyone clearly. But he knew. Someone was there. Someone responsible. Someone who had taken his family. His voice echoed through the chamber. "Where are they?" No answer. C.Y. took a step forward. "Where is my family?" The speakers activated. Mr. Confidence's voice filled the room. "You're angry." C.Y. laughed quietly. "You're surprised?" "I expected anger." "You took my family." "We gave you a reason to become stronger." C.Y.'s expression hardened. "You don't get to decide what I become." Mr. Confidence paused. Then said: "Perhaps." The steel doors around the chamber suddenly opened. C.Y. turned. More operatives entered. Maya's voice came through his communication device. "C.Y., don't." He touched the device. "Maya?" "I'm here." "Where are you?" "I don't know." C.Y. looked around. "Are you hurt?" "No." "Your family?" "I don't know." Mr. Confidence interrupted. "Focus, C.Y." C.Y. looked toward the cameras. "Let them go." "Not yet." "Then we're going to have a problem." Mr. Confidence laughed. "That's exactly what I'm hoping for." The next operative charged. C.Y. moved. --- The first strike came from the left. C.Y. blocked it. A second attack came from the right. He ducked. A third operative rushed forward. C.Y. stepped backward. The three attackers surrounded him. He waited. One moved. C.Y. reacted. He slipped between them and struck the nearest opponent. The man fell. Another attacked. C.Y. turned. Their arms collided. The operative was stronger than the previous ones. C.Y. felt the impact travel through his shoulder. He stepped back. The operative attacked again. C.Y. blocked. Again. Blocked. Again. C.Y. suddenly changed his rhythm. Instead of matching the attack, he moved with it. He redirected the operative's momentum. The man crashed onto the floor. C.Y. didn't stop. Another came. Then another. He moved through them. Every movement was efficient. No wasted motion. No hesitation. The scientists watched the monitors. One whispered: "His reaction time is still increasing." Another looked at the readings. "He's learning while fighting." Mr. Confidence stared at the screen. "That's what we designed." The scientist shook his head. "No." Mr. Confidence turned. "What?" The scientist swallowed. "That's not what we designed." He pointed at the monitor. "He's adapting faster than our simulations predicted." Mr. Confidence stared at the data. C.Y.'s numbers continued rising. --- Maya sat inside another room several floors above. She was locked inside a glass-walled observation chamber. Her wrists were restrained. Two guards stood outside. She could hear the distant sounds of fighting. She looked toward the security monitor. C.Y. was still fighting. Maya's heart tightened. "C.Y..." A door opened behind her. She turned. Daniel entered. He stood quietly. Maya glared at him. "You lied to him." Daniel said nothing. "You lied to all of us." "You don't understand the situation." "I understand enough." Daniel stepped closer. "Mr. Confidence believes C.Y. can become something extraordinary." "And you're willing to destroy him to prove it." Daniel looked at the monitor. "Some people are born for ordinary lives." He looked back at Maya. "C.Y. wasn't." Maya shook her head. "You're wrong." Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Why?" "Because he's still human." Daniel smiled faintly. "That's the problem." --- C.Y. slammed another operative against the wall. The man dropped. C.Y. turned. Three more were coming. He breathed slowly. His body hurt. His mind was racing. But something strange was happening. The more pressure they put on him, the clearer everything became. He could see movements before they happened. He could predict attacks. He could recognize patterns. It wasn't supernatural. It was instinct. Years of fighting. Six months of training. And something else. Something the Directorate had been trying to awaken. C.Y. stepped forward. The first attacker swung. C.Y. moved before the punch was fully extended. The second kicked. C.Y. caught the leg. The third rushed him. C.Y. released the first attacker and stepped aside. The third collided with his partner. C.Y. moved between them. Three strikes. Three seconds. Three bodies hit the floor. Silence. C.Y. stood alone. Then the speakers activated. Mr. Confidence said: "Interesting." C.Y. looked toward the cameras. "Show yourself." "No." "Afraid?" Mr. Confidence laughed. "Not yet." C.Y. looked around. "Where's my family?" "You haven't earned them." C.Y.'s expression became cold. "What do I have to do?" Mr. Confidence paused. Then said: "Kill the next person who enters." The door opened. C.Y. raised his weapon. But he didn't fire. Because the person walking through the door wasn't another operative. It was Maya. C.Y. froze. "Maya?" She looked at him. Her face was pale. Her hands were empty. C.Y. lowered his weapon. "What are you doing here?" Maya looked toward the cameras. "They want you to kill me." C.Y. stared at her. Mr. Confidence's voice echoed through the chamber. "Correct." C.Y. shook his head. "No." Maya stepped closer. "C.Y." "No." "It's okay." "It isn't." She looked into his eyes. "They want to know if you'll choose the mission." C.Y. stared at her. "And what do you want?" Maya smiled sadly. "I want you to choose yourself." C.Y.'s breathing became heavier. Mr. Confidence watched from behind the glass. "Do it." C.Y. didn't move. "Kill her." Still nothing. "She's compromised." C.Y. looked at Maya. She whispered: "Don't." Mr. Confidence's voice became colder. "Then your family dies." C.Y. closed his eyes. He remembered his mother. His sister. The promise he had made. I'll come back alive. He opened his eyes. Maya was still standing there. Waiting. Trusting him. C.Y. slowly lowered the weapon. "I'm not killing her." The room went silent. Mr. Confidence said nothing. C.Y. stepped in front of Maya. "If you want her, you'll have to come through me." Maya looked at him. "C.Y..." He didn't turn. "I'm done taking orders." --- The lights suddenly turned white. Every door in the chamber opened. Armed agents flooded in. C.Y. grabbed Maya's hand. "Run." They sprinted. Gunfire erupted behind them. C.Y. pushed Maya through a doorway. They entered a maintenance corridor. "Left!" They turned. "Right!" Another turn. Maya looked at him. "How do you know where we're going?" "I don't." "Great." "Keep moving." They reached an emergency exit. C.Y. kicked it open. Cold night air hit them. They stumbled onto the roof of the Directorate's underground facility. Maya looked around. "We're underground." C.Y. looked toward the city above them. "We need to get out." They found a service elevator. C.Y. forced the doors open. The elevator was empty. They climbed inside. Maya pressed the highest button. The elevator began rising. C.Y. leaned against the wall. Blood dripped from his knuckles. Maya looked at him. "You okay?" "No." She smiled slightly. "Good." C.Y. laughed. "That's not reassuring." "It means you're still human." C.Y. looked at her. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Maya stepped closer. She carefully touched his face. "You scared me." C.Y. looked into her eyes. "I'm sorry." "Don't apologize." She hesitated. "I thought I was going to lose you." C.Y. swallowed. "You didn't." Maya smiled. "Not yet." Their faces were close. C.Y. could hear her breathing. For a moment, the chaos outside disappeared. Then the elevator stopped. They separated immediately. The doors opened. A dozen armed agents were waiting. C.Y. sighed. "Of course." Maya smiled. "Ready?" C.Y. raised his fists. "Always." --- They fought their way through the building. C.Y. wasn't trying to defeat everyone. He was trying to escape. Maya covered him. He covered her. They moved like a team. Eventually they reached the main entrance. C.Y. kicked the doors open. They ran into the night. Behind them, alarms screamed. Vehicles started moving. Searchlights swept across the street. C.Y. grabbed Maya's hand. "Keep running." They disappeared into an alley. --- Three hours later, they reached an abandoned apartment outside the city. Maya locked the door. C.Y. collapsed onto a chair. She looked around. "Nobody knows about this place." "Good." C.Y. stared at the floor. "They have my family." Maya sat beside him. "We'll get them." "How?" "I don't know." C.Y. looked at her. "That's not exactly a plan." "I know." She smiled. "But it's better than giving up." C.Y. looked away. "I can't lose them." "You won't." "You don't know that." "No." Maya took his hand. "But I know you." C.Y. looked at her. "You've known me less than a year." "Long enough." C.Y. smiled. Maya squeezed his hand. "You saved me." "I would do it again." "Why?" C.Y. didn't answer. Maya waited. Finally he said: "Because you're important to me." Maya's expression softened. "You are too." Neither spoke. Then Maya leaned her head against his shoulder. C.Y. closed his eyes. For the first time in hours, he felt safe. It wouldn't last. --- At the Directorate, Mr. Confidence stood in the observation room. Daniel entered. "They escaped." "I know." "Should we send the retrieval team?" Mr. Confidence stared at the city through the glass. "No." Daniel looked surprised. "No?" "Let them run." "Why?" Mr. Confidence smiled. "Because C.Y. has finally become interesting." Daniel looked at the monitors. "What about his family?" "Move them." "Where?" Mr. Confidence turned. "Somewhere C.Y. can find them." Daniel understood. "You want him to come back." "I want him to come looking." "Why?" Mr. Confidence's eyes narrowed. "Because Phase Three requires something the laboratory cannot provide." "What?" Mr. Confidence smiled. "Choice." --- C.Y. woke before sunrise. He found Maya asleep on the couch. He quietly stood. His body was sore. His mind was worse. He walked toward the window. The city was beginning to wake. Cars moved through the streets. People went to work. Children went to school. Normal life continued. But C.Y.'s life had changed forever. He wasn't a government assassin anymore. He wasn't their obedient weapon. He was a target. His family was being held hostage. Maya was now a fugitive. And somewhere inside the Directorate was a man who had planned everything from the beginning. Mr. Confidence. C.Y. looked at his reflection in the window. He barely recognized himself. The underground fighter was gone. The government operative was gone. What remained was something harder. Something colder. Something dangerous. Maya woke behind him. "You should sleep." "I can't." "Why?" C.Y. turned. "Because we're going back." Maya sat up. "To the Directorate?" "Eventually." "What's the plan?" C.Y. looked toward the sunrise. "First, we find out everything about Project Venom." Maya nodded. "And then?" C.Y.'s eyes hardened. "Then we find my family." He paused. "And after that..." Maya waited. C.Y. looked back toward the city. "...we bring the whole organization down." Far away, beneath the city, a classified screen flickered to life. SUBJECT CYRIL VICTOR — STATUS: ACTIVE PHASE THREE: INITIATED And beneath it appeared a new message. VENOM HAS BEEN UNLEASHED. For the first time, Mr. Confidence smiled. Because he had finally gotten what he wanted. A weapon with no master. A fighter with nothing left to lose. And a man who had just discovered that revenge could be more powerful than any government order.
