Chapter 9: The Text

756 Words
When I heard the door open then Rosie discussing with my mum, I lightly groaned and seriously considered if I should fake being sick again. We'd decided that this Saturday, we would meet up in my house instead of hers this time. What I didn't consider, however, was the fact that today was also Tara's birthday and seeing how enthusiastic Rosie had been the past few days, she would go. And probably try to drag me along too. I really didn't want to go, because I had no idea what to expect. I'd never attended a single party in my life because back at my old school, no one cared to invite the "scary light skinned girl". Not that I actually cared, I hated social events so not that I was missing out on anything. I decided to go out into the living room before Rose somehow brought up the topic of the party to my mum. Too late. I caught wind of the word "party" as soon as I got to the living room then two pair of eyes fixed on me. "Hi Sarah." Rosie smiled innocently but all I wanted to do was bite her. She knew my mum would encourage me to go, from all the stories I've told her about my mum's agenda of getting me to socialize. Two people now against me. I was all alone in the world. "I hear you were personally invited to a birthday party?" My mum raised an eyebrow at me and I smiled, trying to wave it off. "Yeah. Hi, Rosie. Did you bring your own textbook along?" "I did, with extra clothes and gifts for Tara's birthday." She smiled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. I will pull out her hair. "Were you even planing to go?" My mum asked and I sighed, actually getting exhausted at the possibility of me actually ending up at the party. "No mum. No. I don't wanna." "That's rude. You were personally invited." "And probably half of the school too." "At least show up, for a few minutes to give a gift." My mum tried to bargain but I only glared daggers at a smiling Rose. "Come on honey." "Sure. A few minutes." When we headed to my room, I whispered to Rosie. "I'm going to kill you, Amber-Rose." She giggled evilly. A few hours later after my excuse of not having a gift failed (Amber brought an extra for me because she expected this), I finally accepted my inevitable fate of attending Tara's birthday party. Rosie had come prepared with the makeup which I vehemently refused because I had bad experiences of my face breaking out after applying my mum's foundation one time. Not only did I look like a ghost because our skin tones were way different but I also had to deal with a week of painful, rash like acne. Bad experiences need not be repeated. "You probably didn't wash the application foam or you reacted to something in it." Rosie reasoned after I told her and tried to convince me that her products were plant based or something like that. I finally gave in. "You're such a manipulator, you know that?" I joked as she did whatever she did to my face. "If I break out after this, I'm killing you." She laughed and started singing "killing me softly". When she was done, she gave me a small mirror to inspect her work and I have to say, I was impressed. Very impressed. I'd upgraded from a meh to passable human being. And my mum just had to come in that moment. "Honey, I'll be leaving to a friend's later and will be back late tonight, make sure you take your key– wow you're actually pretty." I was offended while Rosie giggled. "What do you mean by 'actually pretty'?" My mum laughed as she left. "Don't forget your keys! Also if you need a ride, call me." "I love your mum." Rosie laughed as she tied up her hair and started cleaning her face with a wet wipe. I sighed. I've been bullied a lot by these two and they've just know each other a few days. While Rosie did her makeup, I scouted for what to wear. As I was examining a mesh top I had and wondering if that was okay to wear with my boyfriend jeans, I got a notification on my phone. One I never expected to receive in a million years. "Hey. How're you doing? I've missed you."
