Chapter 3

Juanita. I woke up, my body sore in intimate places. I winced into the morning light that streamed through the massive windows, blinking away the sleep fog. Warmth. A solid warmth was pressed against my back. My breath hitched. I was snuggled up against someone. Memories from the night before came flooding back in a haze his rough hands on my skin, the way he had taken me, the way he had possessed me. I had never ever been touched like that before. I took a quick breath and shifted my head slightly. My stomach flipped. The man from last night. I barely suppressed a gasp. What have I done? I took him in quickly. He lay on his back, sheets low on his waist, his broad chest rising steadily up and down as he slept. Even in sleep, he looked dominant, an effortless aura of command about him that set my heart thudding. My cheeks burned as heat pooled in my stomach again. He had overperformed. No, that was an understatement. This was the first time I had ever been completely satisfied by a man. A real one. I clenched my thighs together and he stirred. I stilled as his brows knotted slightly before his body relaxed again. His breathing remained deep, even. He was asleep. Relief washed through me. Then clarity slapped me in the face. I was in the guest complex. If anyone caught me here… Panic tightened my chest. My life would be over. I took a sharp breath and carefully, slowly disentangled myself from his warmth. I moved cautiously, barely daring to breathe as I got out of bed. My heart pounding, I gathered my fallen dress and undergarments and hurried to put them back on. I risked one last look at him. His dark lashes rested on his sculpted cheekbones, his face relaxed in a manner that made him look at peace. At that last glance, I turned and slipped out of the room. I moved swiftly, staying in the shadows, my head down as I hurried along the empty halls. I twitched at each sound, expecting someone to turn the corner and catch me at any moment. I finally made it to the back door, my heart thundering as she slipped outside. I took off running and didn't stop till I’d made it to the woods. It was only then that I leaned against a tree, panting. I hurried to a nearby stream, ripping off my dress and pulling a handful of masked leaves from the bushes. I scrubbed my skin raw, making sure I’d washed any hint of his scent from me. When I was satisfied, I got dressed quickly and went to the large structure where the omegas lined up to receive their daily task. I fell in line at the back of the other omegas, still breathing heavily. Ms. Wyma's sharp eyes zeroed in on me right away. I barely stifled a wince. The older woman frowned, her lips thinning. "Late," she snapped. "I’m sorry, Ms. Wyma," I muttered, dipping my head. Wyma scoffed but said nothing more. She pushed a list into my hands. "Your chores." I accepted it hastily and scurried away before the woman could say anything else. — It was noon now, and I had spent the past few hours hauling burlap sacks of grain to the pack storehouse. My body ached, exhaustion seeping deep into my bones. I halted abruptly as I rounded a corner. There, a few feet in front of me, was him. My stomach flipped wildly. He was speaking to another man, his stance relaxed but commanding. I swallowed hard, pressing myself against the wall and regarding him warily. Even now, in daylight, he looked dangerous. The other man was above average height, but still a few inches shorter than him, was nodding obediently, listening intently as they spoke in a low, unintelligible voice. Then, Amber Eyes muttered something. The man nodded, bobbing his head in submission, then Amber Eyes turned and walked away. I didn't dare breathe. I waited until he was a safe distance before moving forward again. Only to stop when I saw Avery approaching the other man. Avery's voice was a whine. "Come on, Nick, just tell me what he said." Nick sighed. "We were talking about grain, Avery. There's nothing more to it." Avery sneered. "Of course there's more to it! He's Alpha Ryke, Nick. From the freaking Blackclaw Pack." My heart stopped. Alpha Ryke? A nauseous wave of horror washed through me. I’d slept with Alpha Ryke?! Nick sighed once more. "Yes, I know, Avery." But I hardly heard them anymore. The name was ringing in my head. Ryke. Alpha of Blackclaw. The deadliest Alpha in the Werelands. A man shrouded in dark rumors and violent stories. And I’d slept with him. I’d let him touch me. Oh, goddess above, what have I done? Avery was still talking. "And I'm pretty sure he's going to be my fated mate at the Moon Hunt. I've just had this feeling, you know?" Nick sighed, clearly exasperated. "Avery…" I’d heard enough. I turned quietly, my mind reeling, and took the longer route back. My stomach churned with sharp fear. I’d just made the biggest mistake of my life. If anyone found out… If he told anyone… I squeezed my eyes shut, swallowing hard. No. He wouldn’t. A man like him would not go out of his way to tell anyone he'd had s*x with an ugly omega. He would forget. And that was what I needed to happen. Forget. Forget last night. Forget him. Because if I didn't…If he didn’t….I wouldn’t like to know.
