The Game Within the Game

The morning air carried the crisp edge of fall, but Alina’s veins thrummed with fire. She walked into school with her head held high and secrets heavier than any textbook on her shoulder. Everything was shifting. And this time, she was the one pulling the strings. She passed Camille in the hallway. Their eyes met—one cold, the other colder. Camille didn’t speak. Neither did Alina. But both knew a storm was brewing. And only one of them would survive it. --- Later – Gregory’s Office, West Corp Tower “South Marina permits are in,” Gregory said, tapping his tablet. “Your name is listed as primary stakeholder on the paperwork.” Alina stood by the window, overlooking the skyline. “Camille tried to sabotage the deal last year. Said it was too ‘risky.’ But now I own it.” “You’ll need to present it at the quarterly investor meeting.” “I’m ready.” “You’d better be.” Gregory turned to her, eyes sharp. “Because if Camille smells weakness, she’ll exploit it.” Alina didn’t flinch. “She’ll have to catch up first.” Gregory smirked. “That’s my girl.” He handed her a gold-plated pen. "Use this to sign the final transfer. I used it when I made my first acquisition. Maybe it'll bring you luck." Alina took it, her fingers curling around the pen with a resolve so strong, it felt like steel. --- Meanwhile – Camille’s Meltdown Camille slammed her phone onto her bed. “They’re putting Alina on the presentation?” she hissed, pacing her room. “Are they insane?” She called Nicholas. “I need a favor.” “What now?” His voice was tired. “I need you to get close to her again.” “No,” he said instantly. “I’m not playing spy.” “You owe me,” she snapped. “I covered for you when you failed calculus and told your parents it was my fault. Remember?” There was silence on the line. Then: “Fine. But I’m not hurting her.” “You won’t have to,” she said. “She’ll do it to herself.” She hung up and tossed her phone aside. Her fingers trembled—not from fear, but fury. Camille opened her laptop, pulling up her private folder labeled “Insurance.” Inside were dozens of files—emails, photos, and recordings from the past three years. She scanned through them, looking for anything she could use to discredit Alina. Her eyes landed on an old video—Alina, back when she was plain and shy, in the lab alone. Camille smirked. “Let’s remind everyone who she used to be.” --- At School – The Spark Rekindles Nicholas caught up to Alina by the library stairs. “Hey. Got a minute?” She eyed him warily. “Why?” “Can’t I just talk to an old friend?” “You stopped being that when you kissed Camille five minutes after breaking up with me.” He sighed. “I messed up. I know that.” Alina crossed her arms. “What do you want, Nicholas?” “I want to make it right.” She stared at him. For a split second, her heart ached—but then she remembered: he chose Camille. He doubted her. He vanished when she needed someone most. “No, Nicholas. You want to feel better about yourself.” She walked away. Dylan had seen the exchange from a distance. As Alina returned to her locker, he fell in beside her. “Nic’s crawling back?” She rolled her eyes. “He thinks I’m stupid enough to believe him.” “You’re not.” He nudged her with his elbow. “You’re terrifying. In a hot way.” She laughed, genuinely. For a moment, the weight on her shoulders lightened. --- After School – Damien’s Apartment The drive buzzed in Alina’s purse. She handed it to Damien without a word. “Ready to look?” he asked. “Let’s see who helped lie about my father’s death.” He slid the drive into his laptop. Lines of files loaded—emails, internal memos, signed documents. There it was. Dr. James Halpern – Autopsy Official. Cause of Death: Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack). Edited by: L. Bray. “Leonard Bray,” Damien said, grimacing. “That snake.” Alina’s voice was steel. “He helped cover it up.” There was more. A hidden scan of the original report—unmarked, uncensored. Cause of Death: Poison – Cardiac Glycoside Toxicity. Her breath caught. Poisoned. She turned to Damien. “They murdered my father.” He said nothing. Just reached for her hand. And for the first time, Alina let herself feel the weight of it all. Grief. Rage. Power. A cocktail she would serve cold. --- The Gala – Saturday Evening The West Foundation Gala was the crown jewel of social events—red carpets, designer gowns, a media frenzy. Camille walked in with Nicholas on her arm, soaking up the flashbulbs. She wore red, bold and unrepentant. Alina entered five minutes later—alone. But she didn’t need an escort. She was the moment. Her floor-length black velvet gown hugged her curves like sin. Her diamond necklace shimmered like ice. Heads turned. Murmurs rose. Gregory raised his glass from across the room. And Damien? He stood near the balcony doors, watching her like she was art. Camille’s smile faded. Alina approached the mic. “Ladies and gentlemen,” she said, voice calm, clear. “As the new face of the South Marina initiative, I’d like to thank you for your trust in me and my family.” Applause. “But I’d also like to thank someone else—my cousin Camille. Without her rejection of this project last year, I wouldn’t be standing here now.” Gasps. Laughter. Even Gregory chuckled. Camille clenched her jaw so tight her cheek twitched. --- Later – Balcony Confrontation “You’re playing dirty,” Camille hissed, cornering Alina outside. “I’m playing smart,” Alina said, sipping champagne. “You should try it sometime.” “You don’t know what you’re doing.” “Oh, I do. I’m just not letting you stop me anymore.” Camille’s eyes darkened. “You don’t belong here.” Alina leaned in, close enough for Camille to smell her perfume. “I don’t just belong. I’m building the new dynasty. And guess what, cousin? You’re not invited.” Camille stormed away. Damien appeared behind her. “That was sexy.” Alina smiled. “That was war.”
