“So do you understand what I’m trying to get you to do?”
Jake was talking to Marie, his female lead in the college production. She was an extremely talented actress, on full scholarship majoring in drama, but she had trouble taking direction from a man. In addition to that, she’d been raised by a single dad to be very tough, and this occasionally showed through in her acting. She had difficulty when the role required tenderness.
“No, I don’t,” Marie replied. “My character is a prostitute. She’s got a hard edge.”
“Yes, that’s true,” said Jake. “But she’s in love with this man. When he touches her, when he kisses her, she changes. And that change is extremely important to the story.”
