Chapter 1 – The Interview
The silence in the room was heavy.
Serena sat upright on the leather chair, clutching her résumé in hands that felt just slightly too warm. The office was all glass and steel — polished, expensive, and cold. Just like the man sitting across from her.
Jeremy Hale.
CEO of Hale Ventures. Billionaire. Rumored heartbreaker. And the reason her heart was skipping beats for the first time in years.
He didn’t smile. Didn’t blink. Just studied her like she was a puzzle he wasn’t sure he wanted to solve.
“You’re… soft-spoken,” he said finally, voice low and smooth like aged scotch. “I don’t usually hire soft.”
Serena met his gaze quietly. “You don’t need loud to get results.”
One corner of his mouth lifted — not a smile. A smirk. Like she’d just passed the first test.
“Interesting answer, Miss DaCosta.”
He leaned forward, elbows resting on the desk. “Why apply to this role? You don’t seem like the type who wants to deal with a man like me.”
She hesitated, then answered, “Maybe I’m exactly the type who can handle you.”
He paused. Then laughed. Quiet. Surprised.
“I don’t do attachments,” he said bluntly. “I don’t explain myself. I don’t make room.”
“I’m not asking for space in your bed,” she replied, cheeks warming. “Just on your calendar.”
Silence.
Then he stood — tall, confident, and infuriatingly attractive.
“You’re hired.”
Her breath caught. “Just like that?”
Jeremy walked around the desk, closing the space between them. Too close. Her pulse quickened.
“Starting Monday,” he said, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear with the back of his fingers. “Let’s see how soft you really are.”
