The growl didn't stop. It got lower and louder, vibrating right through the concrete floor under my sneakers. Gideon stepped back, his heavy boots scraping against the dirt. He pointed his silver gun left and right, his hazel eyes wide and frantic in the pale moonlight. "Who's there? Show yourself!" The yellow eyes moved out of the shadows. Goliath stepped into the light. The massive black dog didn't have his leash on. His short fur was covered in gray dust, and his ears were pinned flat against his head. His top lip was curled up, showing his long, white teeth. "The Don's dog," Gideon whispered, his voice shaking a little. He raised his gun, aiming it straight between Goliath's eyes.
