Early the next morning, Adrian was practically rushing me out the door to get legally married.
In the car, he took a photo of our marriage certificate and posted it on i********:.
I'm a married man now.
I knew his heart supposedly still belonged to his first love, so I said, "Thank you for getting me out of that mess and for paying for my grandmother's treatment. I'll find a way to pay you back. But give me 3 years. After 3 years, we can decide where we go from there."
The slight smile on Adrian's lips disappeared.
He spoke through clenched teeth. "Emma Hartley, do you think I'm joking with you?"
Just then, his gaze landed on an i********: post on my phone.
It was from Lucas.
Year 14 with my best friend.
In the photo, Vanessa stood on tiptoe with one arm slung around his shoulders. Lucas bent slightly so they would be at the same height.
Adrian's expression darkened even more.
He snatched my phone from my hand and accidentally liked the post. He unliked it immediately, opened Lucas's profile, unfollowed him, and removed him as a follower.
Only then did he calmly hand the phone back.
"I'll agree to your 3-year proposal, but while I'm your husband, you're not allowed to have anything to do with your ex-fiancé."
"Oh..."
'Even if Adrian hadn't removed Lucas, I would've done it myself. Who wants to keep watching that cheating bastard and that shameless b***h?'
I went back to Lucas's place to get my passport.
The moment I reached the door, loud voices and music poured out from inside.
Someone shouted, "Luke! Stop staring at your phone! Nessa's putting on a whole show for you and you're not even looking?"
Vanessa laughed. "Exactly! I almost never wear a bikini. I'm in a good mood today, so I'm giving you a private show, and you can't even be bothered to watch?"
At the same time, a follow request from Lucas popped up on i********:, followed by a message.
Lucas: Emmy, I saw you liked my i********: post. Don't feel bad. Vanessa and I really are just friends. We've known each other forever. I also promised I'd take her to see the northern lights. We'll be back in a few days, and then we can reschedule the wedding. Accept my follow request already.
I finished reading the message, then looked through the c***k in the door just as Lucas put his phone down.
He pulled off his shirt, revealing sharply defined abs, and pressed close to Vanessa.
Then he started moving with her to the music.
The crystal disco lights splashed color across the room, pulsing to the beat.
I shoved the door open with a bang. Ignoring their shocked faces as they froze mid-dance, I walked straight toward the bedroom.
As I passed Lucas, he hurriedly pulled his shirt back on and grabbed my arm.
"Emmy, why are you back?"
I almost laughed.
I glared at him. "This is my home. Aren't I allowed to come back?"
Vanessa folded her arms and looked me up and down. "What, are you that scared I'll steal your husband?"
I smiled and held up my marriage certificate between two fingers.
"Sorry. I already have a husband. I'm really not interested in fighting you over one."
Lucas froze and stared at me in disbelief.
"I came back for my documents. As for everything else that belongs to me, throw it away."
'Adrian's place already has everything I need. I can move in with nothing but the clothes on my back.'
Lucas suddenly laughed. "Emmy, stop making stupid jokes. Once Nessa and I get back from our trip, we'll get married."
"Sure."
I nodded and peeled his hand off my arm.
For once, I didn't lose control of my emotions. I felt completely calm, without even a flicker of emotion.
Lucas looked like he wanted to say something else, but Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Come on, buddy. If we leave any later, we'll miss the flight!"
"Have a good trip."
I picked up my passport and walked past Lucas, the words nothing more than a polite formality.
He looked uneasy, but he didn't want to ruin everyone's mood. In the end, he left with the others.
Adrian picked me up and took me to his company, where he handed me a thick stack of documents.
"I put together 10 wedding plans. Take a look and tell me which one you like."
'Honestly, I don't care which one we use. I'm not the woman Adrian really wants to marry anyway.'
I flipped through the pages and pointed at one at random.
"This one. It's simple and hassle-free."
It was a destination-wedding plan that would take us to scenic spots around the country for wedding photos.
Adrian looked at me for a long moment, then nodded.
