Our first stop was Frostmere Island.
Adrian reserved an entire section of the island for our wedding photos.
A familiar voice came from beyond the fence.
"I want to see who has enough money to reserve an entire island!"
Vanessa came marching toward us, cursing under her breath. The moment she recognized me, she broke into a smug smile.
"Emma Hartley? You really are impossible to shake. No matter how hard we try to get rid of you, you keep crawling back. Let me make something clear. Lucas only got together with you because you were new and exciting. I'm the first love who's been by his side for more than 10 years. No matter what you do, you can't replace me." She stepped closer. "Do you know why Lucas accepted your confession back then? Because I got a boyfriend overseas. The day after I went public with my new boyfriend, Lucas agreed to date you. Think about that. We didn't speak for 2 years, but he liked every single thing I posted. Then I broke up with my boyfriend. On your anniversary, Lucas flew overseas to be with me. I'm guessing he never told you any of that."
That part was true.
I was the one who had pursued Lucas.
He had been student council president. One day, I hurt my ankle during a sprint, and he applied ointment to it himself.
The sunlight seemed to gild his handsome, gentle features, and my heart gave a sudden leap. It was as if the whole world had burst into color.
I chased him relentlessly for 2 years. He rejected me 12 times.
The 13th time, he finally said yes.
After that, he treated me better and better. He never flirted with other women, and every holiday came with gifts and surprises.
I truly thought I was loved.
I had no idea Lucas had simply been good at hiding the truth.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
Slow, deliberate applause came from behind me.
"Amazing. Absolutely amazing."
Vanessa's face went white.
"Adrian? No, Mr. Mercer? Why... why are you here too?"
Adrian leaned into me, draping an arm over my shoulders and half his weight against my side.
A lazy smile tugged at his lips. "Obviously, I'm here to take wedding photos with my wife."
He turned and kissed my cheek.
His voice dropped into a deliberately intimate murmur. "Right, honey?"
"Adrian Mercer! What the hell are you doing? Get your hands off my wife!"
Lucas appeared out of nowhere and punched Adrian in the face.
Blood welled at the corner of Adrian's mouth.
Instead of getting angry, he grabbed my hand and pointed at Lucas, looking almost comically aggrieved.
"Honey, he hit me. And he called you his wife."
I gently wiped the blood from the corner of Adrian's mouth, then turned a cold look on Lucas.
"Lucas Grant, Adrian and I are legally married now. If you hit him again, I'm calling the police."
Adrian gave our joined hands a little shake.
"Not enough."
I looked up at Lucas again.
"Apologize to my husband."
Lucas stared at me as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
Then he asked again, "Emma, did you really marry him?"
