Becca sat nervously in the waiting room, absentmindedly twisting her wedding ring around her finger.
Craig noticed immediately.
He reached over and intertwined his fingers with hers.
"You, okay?"
She nodded, though the smile she offered was shaky.
"I just... I don't know. What if something's wrong?"
He squeezed her hand.
"Then we'll face it together."
She leaned against his shoulder, drawing comfort from the calm confidence in his voice.
"Together," she whispered.
A nurse called Becca 's name, and they followed her down the hallway to a softly lit examination room.
After a few routine questions, the ultrasound technician smiled warmly.
"Ready to meet your little one?"
Becca laughed nervously.
"I've been ready since I found out."
Craig stood beside her, with one hand resting protectively on her shoulder.
The technician spread warm gel across Becca 's stomach before moving the ultrasound wand gently across her skin.
For several quiet seconds, the screen showed only shifting shades of gray.
Then...
"There," the technician said, pointing to a tiny shape.
Becca stared.
"That's... our baby?"
"It sure is."
Craig stepped closer, his eyes never leaving the monitor.
Their baby was no bigger than a tiny bean.
Yet somehow, seeing that little life made everything feel real.
The technician pressed a button.
A rapid, rhythmic sound filled the room.
Whoosh...
Whoosh...
Whoosh...
Becca gasped.
"Oh my God..."
Craig's hand tightened around hers.
The heartbeat was fast, steady, and impossibly beautiful.
Neither of them spoke.
They simply listened.
Tears rolled silently down Becca 's cheeks.
Craig quickly wiped away his own.
"I wasn't crying," he joked weakly.
Becca laughed through her tears.
"Liar."
He smiled.
"I've never been happier to be caught."
The technician handed them a printed ultrasound picture before leaving the room.
Craig studied it like it was the most valuable photograph in the world.
"I know it's just a little blob..."
Becca giggled.
"...but it's our blob."
Craig laughed.
"Our perfect little blob."
On the drive home, they stopped at a small overlook above the river.
It had become one of their favorite places.
The wind carried the scent of pine trees as they sat together on a wooden bench.
Becca rested her head on Craig's shoulder.
"What do you think our baby will be like?"
Craig smiled.
"I hope they have your heart."
She looked up.
"And your kindness."
He kissed her forehead.
"I hope they grow up knowing what real love looks like."
Becca's eyes softened.
"They will."
That evening, they carefully placed the ultrasound picture into a wooden keepsake box alongside their wedding photos, pressed wildflowers from their honeymoon, and the tiny pair of baby socks.
Craig smiled.
"We're going to need a bigger box."
Becca laughed.
"I think you're right."
He wrapped an arm around her.
"You know..."
"What?"
"Our story keeps getting better."
Becca looked at the keepsake box before meeting his eyes.
"It always will."
Outside, the first stars began to appear in the darkening sky.
Inside their home, the tiny heartbeat they had heard earlier still echoed in their minds.
It was more than just a sound.
It was a promise.
A promise that hope continues to grow, even after the hardest chapters.
And for Craig and Becca, their greatest adventure was only just beginning.
