Chapter 5: The Unyielding Mother

1088 Words
The months following little Jordan’s birth marked a strange shift in the dynamic of the Rowen household. Mark, who had once harboured hope that fatherhood would soften the sharp edges of his troubled marriage, quickly found himself entrenched in a new, demanding reality. It wasn’t the fresh start he had envisioned, and the weight of his expectations collided violently with the truth of Lenna’s indifference. Mark threw himself into the role of father with an intensity that was almost alarming. Every moment he could, he was at Jordan’s side, holding him, soothing him, playing with him. He wanted to give the child everything he never had growing up; love, stability, security, but it wasn’t just for Jordan’s sake. It was his desperate attempt to fill the emotional void that had taken over his marriage. The warmth of a child, the innocence in his son’s eyes, was the only thing that didn’t feel cold. The only thing that didn’t ask for anything in return. But Lenna, on the other hand, never truly adjusted. It was as if the birth of her son had only further distanced her from Mark, from the reality of parenthood, and from the life she had been forced to create. Instead of embracing her role as a mother, she slipped further into the shadows of her own schemes and aspirations. She’d wanted a child, but not for the reasons most mothers do. She wanted a tool, a pawn, something to secure her position and leverage her power within her marriage. While Mark could be found doting on Jordan, feeding him, changing his diapers, or even whispering soft words of affection to him, Lenna could often be seen lurking in the background, a faraway look in her eyes. Her attention was focused not on her child, but on what was next: the next event, the next opportunity to climb higher. She knew how to manipulate the situation to her advantage. Mark had hoped that the presence of their son would somehow shift Lenna, soften her icy demeanour, but he quickly realized he was wrong. She barely spent any time with Jordan. The few moments she did engage were perfunctory, calculated, and hollow. It wasn’t long before Mark realized that the smile Lenna showed to their son was more for show than genuine affection. She never got down on the floor to play with him, never whispered words of love in his ear. She never sat up late at night, comforting him when he cried, nor did she wake up early to care for him. She always had an excuse, something that pulled her away from her maternal responsibilities; meetings, events, social obligations, or simply a desire to escape the prison of her domestic duties. Instead, she spent her time plotting. With every passing day, her schemes became more refined. There was always something new. A new charity event she had to attend, a business deal to secure, a social media post to maintain her perfect public image. But behind it all, Lenna’s true agenda simmered, hidden beneath layers of charm and well-crafted smiles. She played the part of the perfect wife when cameras were on to capture to moment when they had to appear like the happy, united family to the public. But in the privacy of their home, she remained emotionally detached, her mind always on her next move. She knew Mark was vulnerable; he cared deeply for their son, and she intended to use that to her advantage. Every day was another opportunity to tighten her grip on him, to manipulate his feelings, to create a dynamic where she could get whatever she wanted. Mark, oblivious to the full extent of Lenna’s manipulations, began to feel more and more isolated. The love he felt for his son was pure, but it was complicated by the overwhelming weight of a marriage that seemed to be slowly suffocating him. His desire to protect Jordan was unwavering, but the realization that Lenna was so emotionally detached, so invested in herself, stung with a cruel sharpness. He had given up on trying to be a perfect husband to her. He had long stopped believing that she would ever change. Now, his focus was solely on Jordan. And while Mark may have been the better parent in the traditional sense, Lenna always had a way of making her presence known. Every conversation she had with Mark, every interaction they had in front of the staff or the public, was carefully crafted to show a "loving" side of her. She knew how to manipulate her image, and Mark couldn’t help but wonder if that was her greatest strength: the ability to make the world believe she was something she wasn’t. At home, however, she would slip into the shadows, reappearing only when it suited her. And when she did, it was always about appearances—making sure she had the perfect picture for her social media feed, keeping up the facade that they were the perfect family, when in truth, there was nothing genuine about it. Mark, growing increasingly disillusioned, began to feel trapped in a gilded cage. The more he tried to pour love and energy into his son, the more Lenna’s apathy consumed him. There was no room for love to blossom between them, not in the way he had hoped. Every attempt to reach her felt like another door slammed in his face. But Lenna, with her manipulative ways, always knew when to tug at the right strings. She could sweet-talk him into attending a family event, or flash him a smile just when he needed it, always keeping him on a leash, just tight enough to make sure he didn’t stray too far. Yet, in the quiet of his thoughts, Mark knew. He knew that this marriage wasn’t about love anymore. It was about survival, for both of them. But as long as Jordan was in the picture, there was still a piece of Mark that held on to hope. He wasn’t willing to give up on being a father to his son, even if it meant enduring a charade of a marriage. Lenna, for her part, continued her silent conquest, playing the long game. She had what she wanted: a son, an image, and the resources to secure her future. She knew the power she held, and she wasn’t about to let it slip away. Every day, she schemed. Every day, she plotted. And Mark? Well, he was just another piece in her grand design.
