Bella's entrance into the office felt like a wave of energy, her bright smile and confidence radiating through the door. The moment she stepped inside, Dr. James, couldn't help but appreciate her effortless beauty. His voice was teasing, almost playful, as he greeted her.
“If someone ever told me that you are this beautiful, I would have never believed him. I mean, look at you! Sunglasses, jeans, and high heels… you sure look like a queen bee today!” he said, flashing a grin.
Bella raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. With a smooth, confident stride, she replied, “Good morning, doctor. I believe you’re feeling great after seeing your favourite patient… uhm, no, ex-patient."
James couldn't help but laugh at her witty remark, his tension easing in her presence. “Shake it off, Ms. Jones! So, what’s up? What did I do to be blessed with your presence this lovely morning?”
Her laughter echoed in the room, and for a moment, the weight of her past seemed to lighten in the presence of this friendly banter. Bella felt an unexpected sense of peace when she was around James, even if she couldn’t quite figure out why. Maybe it was the way he always knew just how to ease her worries, or maybe it was his unwavering support through the storm of her emotions. Either way, she was grateful for him, more than she could express.
“I’ve been thinking a lot lately,” she began, her tone turning more earnest. “I’m really indebted to you for all the advice and support you’ve given me through my journey, James. You've helped me more than I can say. But there’s something I need to ask… about my medical bill.”
She was expecting a simple response, perhaps some formalities or a reminder of the terms of her treatment. Instead, she was met with a strange hesitation from him. His eyes darted briefly to the side, avoiding hers as he fumbled for words.
"Ac…tually, all your medical bills have… have been cleared,” James said, his voice a little more uncertain than usual. He couldn’t quite meet her gaze, his fingers nervously tapping the surface of his desk.
The room fell silent, and Bella froze for a moment, her expression one of disbelief. “What?! How? When?” she asked, her voice tinged with confusion. This wasn’t something she’d expected. She couldn’t fathom why James, someone she knew to be practical and professional, would handle her bill in such a way. It didn’t make sense.
James shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his usual calm demeanour slipping slightly. “A... a friend of mine. Someone I trust. They... took care of it for you,” he said quickly, trying to brush off the awkwardness of the situation. He knew exactly how this would sound; too personal, too unprofessional. But there was nothing he could do now except try to make it seem like no big deal. “You don’t need to worry about it. It’s all taken care of. You’ve been through enough already.”
Bella’s mind was racing. A “friend” of James had cleared her bills? The mystery of it hung in the air, and her curiosity piqued. Who would do that for her? And why? More importantly, why would James, of all people, keep this secret from her?
She studied him carefully, watching the way his eyes avoided hers, how he seemed to tense up when the topic came up. The question lingered between them, and for a moment, the light atmosphere of their banter was replaced by something heavier.
“I don’t… understand,” Bella said, her voice quieter now, more guarded. “Who would do something like that for me?”
James let out a soft sigh, finally meeting her gaze. There was an undeniable shift in his expression, a mix of hesitation and something else—something Bella couldn’t quite place. “I can’t tell you everything, Bella. Not yet, anyway.” he said softly.
The answer didn’t satisfy her, but it didn’t surprise her either. James had always been a man of mystery when it came to personal matters. And yet, there was a strange comfort in the way he tried to shield her from the truth, even if it left her with more questions than answers.
“So, what now?” Bella asked, still trying to process everything. “I’m free and clear of all that debt? And you’re just going to leave me hanging on who helped me out?”
James smiled faintly, his usual charm returning but with a hint of something deeper in his eyes. “Let’s just say someone who cares about you made sure you could focus on getting better. No need to worry about it.”
Bella didn’t know what to make of it. But for now, she chose to let it go. She had enough on her plate, after all. Besides, the more she thought about it, the more she realized that maybe, just maybe, someone was looking out for her—someone who saw the broken pieces of her life and decided to step in, even when she didn’t ask for help.
As she stood to leave, she smiled at James one last time. “Thanks, James. Really. You’ve done more for me than I could ever repay.”
“Just get better, Bella. That’s all that matters now,” he said, his voice a bit softer than usual.
And as she stepped out of his office, Bella couldn’t help but feel that there was more to the story. But for now, she’d have to wait for the answers to reveal themselves in their own time.
