Chapter One - Introducing the Miller Family

705 Words
Before the night of my sister Megan's 18th birthday life was just ticking along.  Nothing big on the horizon, nothing exiting going on!  It was plane ordinary.  I was 13, I was in 8th grade and working my way towards the end of Middle School.    Sometimes I would go so far as to say my life was dull and boring.  If I knew then what I knew now I would never take 'dull and boring' for granted ever again. My name is April Miller.  I belong to the Copper Rose Moon pack.  We are about 300 strong, which makes us one of the smallest packs in the US.  These days things are pretty settled amongst our kind.  Packs tend to keep themselves to themselves which means wars are pretty much non existent and small packs can live in peace as long as they can support themselves. I have Strawberry Blonde hair (I call it ginger, Mom called it 'kissed by fire') and green eyes.  I am just your regular average girl. I'm not tall, I'm not short.  I'm not fat, I'm not thin.  I'm not popular, I'm not bullied.  I am right down the middle.    My father, Peter, is a retired pack warrior.  Actually he's a drunk!  He has been for years!! Once upon a time he was one of the packs most amazing fighters!  He held no title rank but was well respected by his peers and his Alpha.  He was strong and assisted the Beta and the Gama in their duties if they needed him to. My Mom and my sister were the real stars of the family.  Mom worked in the pack hospital.  Not only was she a kick ass Doctor but she was also a healer.  Most wolves are pretty standard, but there are a rare few with powers.  These are said to be the favourites of our Moon Goddess Alanis.  My mom was the most beautiful she wolf you have ever seen.  She was tall and slim with long blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes like the sky on a summers day.  They were framed with thick black lashes that were long and curled.  But much more than that she was kind, caring, and compassionate with a beautiful soul.  She was a dedicated wife and an awesome mom and although she worked hard at the hospital she never missed a single event in our lives.  Her name was Lesley and not a moment goes by where I don't think of her. Megan was a younger version of Mom.  Same Blonde hair, same blue eyes same sickeningly great lashes!  Personality wise they couldn't have been further apart.  It wasn't as if she was spoiled..  Ok yeah she was spoiled, a little self centred -  even self entitled sometimes - but I still loved her very much.  Everything Megan touched turned to gold.  She was captain of everything you could think of in High School, and it just came so easily.  She was gorgeous, smart and popular.   What really frustrated me about Megan was that she could have gone anywhere and done anything she wanted.  But all she was interested in was becoming a Luna.  Not only did she want the title, she thought she damn well deserved it.  And when Lucas Campbell, the future Alpha of the Cerulean Moon Pack, transferred to her Highschool and started to date her seriously, she had everything she had ever wanted!  Like I said, she had the Midas touch!! Lucas became a familiar face in our house and around our dinner table.  My Dad thought he was brilliant and my Mom adored him.  He had such an easy way about him when it came to our parents, they were wrapped around his little finger. As for me, I was so intimidated by him I couldn't look him in the eye.  On the rare occasion that our eyes did meet my face burned like the sun and I immediately looked away.  I wondered how long I would feel this awkward in his presence..  Would I always turn into a puddle of water in front of him? Turns out I didn't need to worry about that.  After he killed half my family I never saw him again!
