"Did you murder someone?"
I snapped my head at the landlady. "What did you say?"
"Did you commit some crime? Or why else would the press be interested in a mediocre girl like you?"
I sniffled. "Okay now I'm low key offended"
"Whatever" She waved a dissmissive hand. "Take care of this or the next thing I'll do is throw you out of my house" She said as she walked away.
I looked back at the group of reporters gathered at the front step of the house. And only one thing came to my mind. Ian f*****g Kingston, you are dead!
With every intention of killing him I checked the clock on my desk to go to work and almost killed myself seeing it.
I was already late and had only 15 minutes to get ready.
I dashed to the bathroom and did the quickest possible shower ever. Then changing into pants and a white shirt I swiftly brushed my hair and stormed down the staircase with my heels on my hands.
Then I did a mistake. I forgot the reporters and opened the damn front door.
Shit.
"Miss Evans can you tell us more about your relationship?"
"What is the exact date you met him?"
"When did he propose to you?'
The reporters started striding in through the front door, bombarding me with countless question.
"Miss Evans how is it like to date-"
"Oh my god! leave me alone" I began waving my heels like a weapon, trying to scare them away but they kept coming in.
"Marta!!! I screamed from the top of my lungs to my landlord. "Open the back door!!!"
"You come and open it. I'm not your servant"
"Oh for God's sake" I grumbled and ran to the kitchen. Seeing the press follow me I quickly grabbed the door knob and tried to open it but the door was locked.
In panic, my eyes surveyed the room and found a small open window to the right.
I scurried over and squeezed through, losing ten pounds on my way out. Then I landed face flat on the cement ground and the pain that traveled through my bones - fantastic haha jokes on me.
I wearily stood up, rubble stinging on the palms of my hands.
"She's over there. She's over there" A reported shouted, pointing to me and I snapped my head at him in horror.
The other reporters scrambled out of the house and started running towards me, holding their cameras out.
"You little bitches" I cursed and ran the other way barefoot, holding my heels and my handbag for my life.
I ran straight to the bus stop and jumped on to a bus, scaring every passenger in it. Feeling breathless and out of will power to move a single muscle I crashed on to a corner seat, panting heavily.
By the time I reached the ATC I wasn't any better. Leaves still stuck out of my hair, my face red after falling flat on the cement, my feet and my hands soar, my pants creased, my blouse ruined. The only difference was, I had my heels on.
When I entered the building, everyone gasped.
It was either because of my appearance or the fact that I was the boss's fiancé.
Nevertheless I didn't care. I had a CEO to murder.
I strode forward in fury. "Move move move!" I bellowed to a group of people blocking my path and they scattered away, giving me horrified glances.
Everyone else in the lobby stared at me with their mouths hanging wide open, their eyes trailing from the top of my hair to the bottom of my heels.
The elevator doors opened and inside stood a skinny guy with glasses.
"You" I pointed to him and he gave me the same shocked look. "Out!
Hastily, he scampered away and I stepped inside.
As I reached the CEO's floor, I stomped over to Ian's office and swung the door open.
Ian was sitting on his chair, his elbows resting on the armrest and his chin propped on his folded hands. He was staring intently at something on his desk, his mind lost in thoughts.
When he heard the door open, he looked up and a small smile appeared on his lips. "I was waiting for you"
"I bet you did" I strode forward and slammed my hands on his table. "Do you know what happened to me this morning? Do you know how disastrous my life became after what you did? Do you even care about it at all?" My nostrils flared in anger as I hissed through gritted teeth.
Ian stood from his chair and gave me a once over, his lips twitching up into an amused grin. "You have leaves in your hair"
"It's a new hairstyle" I said in a humourless tone and Ian let out a soft laugh.
"I have a gift for you"
I scoffed. "The last thing I want is a gift from you. And-" I scowled. "Did you not hear what I said earlier? My life is ruined thanks to you"
And of course Ian ignored me and turned to take something from his desk. "Here"
He opened a small dark blue box and I had a mini heart attack seeing what was in it.
Inside was a beautiful blue sapphire ring with small diamonds surrounding the stone.
"What is that?"
Ian raised his brows. "Uhh... a ring"
I glared at him. "I'm not an i***t. But why are you showing me that?"
"I'm not showing you. I'm giving you" He grabbed my left hand and carefully put the ring on my finger.
"What are you doing?" I tried pulling my hand back but he held it tightly.
"We're engaged and this is the ring"
"We're not engaged" I exclaimed in shock. "I'm gonna remove this"
Suddenly Ian wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer, until our chests were pressed together.
I glanced up and a shiver ran up my spine, realising how close we were. His face was only inches away from mine and I could see how flawless he was. His deep blue eyes, his perfect jawline, his soft lips. He had all the beauty a man could possess.
He kept his fingers under my chin and tilted my face up. "Do not dare remove it fiancé" He smirked and leaned into whisper in my ear. "or there will be consequences"
You stupid, arrogant, narcissistic assho-
"Mr. Kingston" Daniel knocked on the door and Ian sighed with frustration.
He glanced up. "What is it Daniel?"
Daniel opened the door and walked in with a frightened look on his face. "Umm..i-uh" He stuttered.
Ian narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "What?"
"Hey darling" Melissa bounced in with a big smile on her face.
Ian's jaw tightened, his eyes darkening. "What is she doing here?" He spat in fury.
Melissa giggled. "I'm your new PA"
"You're fired" Ian said with ice lacing his tone.
Melissa leaned on one foot and folded her arms across her chest. "You can't fire me"
Ian narrowed his eyes and looked at Daniel for answers. And Daniel was literally sweating. "Umm..." He pulled on his collar. "Chairman sent her"
Suddenly, Ian slammed his fist on the table making me jump back in shock. "Say it again" He spat, his nostrils flaring in anger.
All the colour drained out of Daniel's face and he looked down in guilt. "I'm sorry, I couldn't stop her"
Melissa smirked and her eyes traveled to me.
"So this is her" She approached me and plucked a leaf out of my hair. "The b***h who seduced my fiancé"
"I think you're mistaken. It did not happen that way. But I can give you advices on how to get him back-
"Whatever trick your pulling on him-" She stepped forward. "It's not gonna work for that long. I'm here and I will take him back"
"Oh please" I grinned. "He's all yours" I tittered and glanced at Ian, expecting to see him scowling at me but his eyes were fixed on Melissa, filled with hatred and malice.
Melissa glared at me and turned to the door. "All right, bring it in"
Four men walked in, dragging a table and a chair with them.
"What's going on?" Daniel asked in shock.
Melissa shrugged. "I'm moving my table here"
Ian's jaw tightened, his fists clenching at his side, turning his knuckles white. He grimaced and muttered a curse under his breath before storming out of the room in fury.
"You can't move in here" Daniel snapped. "In ATC, PAs don't stay inside the CEO's office. Move your table out"
"Then her?" Melissa pointed to me. "She gets to stay inside and w***e?"
"Excuse me?" I scrunched up my nose. "I'm a hard working employee in the marketing department, which by the way is 20 floors down. So I'm not staying here and I definitely don't w***e" I turned around. "Bye. Go get your man back. Then go to hell" I strode out and popped my head back from the door. "And don't forget to take him with you"
...
It was near lunch- no it was lunch time but our VP was not letting us go.
"Do not dare move from your seat. You understand me?" She stood in the middle of the room with her hands on her hips and bellowed. "Our deadline is tomorrow. None of you can go home without finishing your work. And no lunch today"
Somebody give me money to file a law suit. Well I got several law suits to file-
She slammed a file on her desk and everyone winced at the sound. "I'm telling this specially for the ones who came late today"
Shit. I bent my head low pretending I wasn't here.
"I don't care who you are engaged to or who you are married to. In here it's my rule and only I rule. It doesn't matter if you have any personal connections to the boss or not. You do what I say"
My god. I couldn't even look at the VP. I had my head bent so low that I thought my keyboard would swallow me up.
"Actually ma'am" Alan raised a finger up. "It's not just the boss but actually your boss's boss"
You die today Alan.
"Mr. Brown" VP clenched her fists at her sides. "Just shut up and do your work!"
Then at the worst moment my phone began ringing. My eyes widened in horror and I quickly cut the call seeing it was an unknown caller ID.
"Whose phone was that?" VP scanned the room, glaring at everyone.
Then my phone began ringing again. f**k! I quickly cut it and turned it off.
"I heard it again" VP's eyes slowly trained on us. "Which of one of you is it?"
"It's Alan" Brian said quickly.
"WHAT?" Alan screamed like a banshee. "It's not mine! I don't like you anymore Brian"
"I've never liked you in the first place" Brian retorted.
Alan's face reddened and he crumpled a piece of paper from his table and threw it at Brian.
Seeing it, steam blew out of VP's ears in fury and as she was about to scream at them, the telephone on her desk rang. She muttered a curse under her breath and stomped over to take it.
As she answered, I watched her face twist from shock to awe to then grimace. She said something to the phone and looked up, directly at me with that ugly scowl of hers.
"Hailey it's for you"
I frowned. Me?
Hesitantly, I walked over to her table and took the phone from her.
"Hello"
"Have lunch with me" Ian's voice came and my eyes widened.
"No thank you" I quickly kept the phone down and smiled at the VP who was breathing down my neck.
The phone rang again.
Shit. Reluctantly I answered it.
"Come downstairs now" He demanded.
Sweat trickled down my forehead seeing the VP listening closely to our conversation. "I can't-" I muttered. "Our VP is not letting us go" That would shut him up.
"Give her the phone"
I paled. "No"
"Give it"
I looked at the VP and she had her arms folded across her chest as she stood, glaring at me.
I gulped. "It's umm... it's for you" I extended her the phone and she took it from me with a frown.
She placed it against her ear and slowly I saw her entire face turning red with anger. She shot me a murderous glare and answered the phone with a small 'yes sir' and kept it down. I swallowed anxiously.
She glanced at me. "You can go" She spat.
After excusing myself I took my handbag and went to the lobby.
And there stood Ian, leaning against the receptionist desk, checking his watch.
I strode over to him. "You're making me lose my job"
He straighted up and smiled. "I'm the boss here Hailey"
I scowled. "Haha very funny. So where's your new PA?" I grinned knowing it makes him mad.
And it did. "Don't ruin my mood"
"What are you goning to do with her?" I asked as I followed him to the parking lot.
"I'm gonna make her life a living hell"
"Like you did with mine?"
Ian turned and narrowed his eyes. "Your life is not a hell"
"Ha" I scoffed. "Don't begin. I literally had the paparazzi chasing me today and it's all your fault. You are selfish, arrogant and inconsiderate. You are the most-" Rest of my words slid back down my throat as we stopped in front of a sleek black car.
"That yours?"
"Mmm" He nodded and pressed a button in his car key.
Then it's doors began opening upwards. Damn. "Get in"
I was in too awe to even continue with my scolding. So I did as he told.
He drove to a restaurant and my jaw dropped realising which one it was.
It was Ferlino house. One of the most expensive restaurants in all of New York. Only the rich comes here but it had always been my dream to eat from here, to try the heavenly taste in my mouth at least once.
Then I frowned and looked at Ian. "You're paying right?"
Ian bit his lip to suppress his grin. "Of course I'm paying"
Good good.
We got out and I followed him inside, my eyes wandering all over the place as I looked at everything in amazement.
"Is this your first time?" He asked.
"Yeah"
"Why? I checked your bank account. You have enough money to afford here"
I came to an abrupt halt. "Omg people gotta stop talking about my bank account" Then I turned to Ian. "Why are you checking by bank account?" I narrowed my eyes. "That's illegal and for your question, I'm saving up"
We took a seat at a corner table near the window and the waiter came and gave us the menus. "For what?"
I almost had a heart attack seeing the prices. "I'm saving to buy an apartment at the Prescott's" I flipped through the pages but there was nothing cheap.
Ian leaned back in his chair and folded his arms with a smile on his lips. "I live in the Prescott's"
"I know" They even charge for water. What?
"In a penthouse"
"I heard"
"It's the most expensive one"
I threw my hands up. "Oh my God! I didn't know I came here to listen you boast"
Ian smirked and stared at me, his eyes glinting with newfound joy.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing"
"I'm getting very suspicious"
"You should be"
"Not this again" I groaned. "So how do I get out of this?" I said, showing the ring in my finger. Why the hell do I still wear it? Stupid Hailey.
"You can't get out"
I breathed. "There has to be a way"
But he shook his head with a smile on his lips.
Breath Hailey breath.
I leaned in. "I'm gonna get out. You just wait and watch"
Ian smirked and leaned in. "Try. I'll wait"
"Fine" I nodded. "Somehow I'll make you release me. When you do, you will take this ring off my finger yourself"
A lop sided grin curved up his lips. "Good luck with that.
...
It was evening and I got down from the bus to go back to my apartment or whatever that was.
I put the key in the door and opened it, sighing heavily in exhaustion.
"What are you doing here?" Marta asked from the couch.
"Uhh" I frowned. "I live here"
"Not anymore"
My eyebrows furrowed. "What does that mean? I rent your upper floor"
"Well" Marta stood up and pushed me out the door. "Someone bought it and took all your belongings away"
"What?" I yelled in shock. "Why did you sell it? And why the hell did you allow a stranger to take my stuff?" By now I was screaming.
"I'm not deaf girl. Don't scream" She huffed angrily. "And here" She took an envelope out and handed it to me. "This is for you"
I grabbed it and hastily ripped it open. It said, come home fiancé.
I took a deep breath and crumpled the paper in red hot boiling anger.
Ian f*****g Kingston, You are dead!
I got out from Lexi's car and pulled on my skirt. "This is so uncomfortable"
"You're doing fine" Lexi dragged me out of the parking and Brian stood at the entrance waiting for us.
When he saw me, his eyes widened. "Wow! when you said short, I didn't expect it to be this short"
I pulled on my clothes again. "What do you expect me to do? My clothes got kidnapped. I have no choice but to wear Lexi's for today"
Lexi was a lot shorter than me so her clothes don't exactly fit me. The skirt I wore today was too short and the shirt was too tight. And all of this happened thanks to Ian stupid Kingston.
Even though he invited me to live in his luxurious Prescott penthouse I would never ever live with him. If he gave it to me as a present I might reconsider but never, not ever will I live with him. So being downgraded to status homeless, I crashed into Lexi's last night like I got robbed - which I actually did.
"So you're gonna buy new clothes today?" Brian asked and I sighed heavily.
Spending money was never my favourite thing.
"It's not just clothes he stole. He even got my laptop, my books, my penholder and many more. But yeah" I pouted. "I have to buy an entire wardrobe today" I slumped my shoulders in defeat.
I knew asking Ian was never an option. He would never give them back. I had to find an alternative. Like, smacking him with a cement bag or pushing him off a cliff.
"What about your other things?" I sniffled in sorrow. "Let's just think that's a tomorrow's problem"
"So how long are you gonna stay with Lexi?"
I sighed. "Till I find a cheap place"
After sharing my miserable life story with Brian we walked inside the ATC. As we did, someone suddenly whistled from the lobby.
I turned to it's direction and saw Oliver, an employee from another department, leaning against a pillar with his friends.
"Never knew you were so hot Hailey" Oliver smirked, his eyes checking me from head to toe. His friends gave me the same lust full gaze and I felt anger and discomfort at the same time.
I pulled my handbag in front of me to cover myself and glared at them. "Go choke on your tiny d***s assholes!" I spat angrily and strode forward.
Lexi gave them the middle finger and Brian glared at them before getting on to the crowded elevator with me.
Inside, I could feel even the older guys checking me out, their gazes lingering on my butt and then on my breast. I wanted to claw their eyes out but their positions in the company were higher than mine. I was completely powerless. If only I could meet them outside ATC I would - hit hit double smack punch and kick where the sun doesn't shine.
When the elevator opened I stomped out and grabbed a tissue from my bag, wiping the sweat in my forehead.
"I can't wear this" I groaned. "Everyone is looking at me. And to be honest-" I looked down at my clothes. "This is not very work appropriate either. The VP will kill me"
"Just wait till evening" Lexi placed her handbag on her desk and sat down. "We'll buy new ones"
"Fine" I exhaled in dejection and collapsed into my chair.
Across the room, VP spotted me and she lowered her glasses to get a good look at my clothes.
"I'm not gonna say anything Evans. You already give me too much blood pressure" She placed her hand on her chest and took a deep breath, calming her temper. Then narrowed her eyes. "But don't you dare think being the CEO's fiancé could get you out of this"
Ha being his fiancé is what got me in the first place.
Afters others filled in, the VP gave her terrible morning speech and we started working. But I couldn't stop yawning. I had a lot of murderous thoughts last night and those kept me awake.
"I'm gonna get coffee" I wearily stood up, yawning again and sauntered to our breaking room.
As I was making my coffee two hands came from behind me, one circling around my waist and the other on the counter.
I gasped.
"What are you wearing Miss Evans?" Ian's husky voice came, whispering in my ear. His lips grazed my ear lobe and I stilled in his arms. "I like it" He leaned closer, his nose nuzzling in my hair. "If you wear it elsewhere, not here" Then quickly recovering from my paralysed state I turned around and smacked him in the forehead.
"Shoo you evil"
