He wrenched his gaze away from mine to something on the side and then only did I realise he was pressing the elevator button to his floor.
I blushed. My gosh did I really romanticize our positions when he just leaned down to press the button?
Feeling embarassed I quickly turned around and raised my hand up to press the button to the marketing floor but Ian's hand came over mine and he did it for me.
As he did, his fingers touched mine and I felt a shiver run up my spine. I quickly retrieved my hand and blushed in all possible shades of red.
Shit.
Muttering a curse under my breath, I moved to the side, far away from him. But I could still see him watching me and the way he was looking like I was some kind of amusing creature - Gosh! I could shrink into a thin particle of air.
Daniel was scowling and I knew exactly why. I defied his boss, I tricked him. And now I fear the consequences.
I knew I would lose the job, that's for sure. But the chief? What will he do to him? The chief has a family. He has children!
The elevator bell dinged and it's doors opened. Standing on the other side were Lexi and Brian.
"Hey Hailey" Lexi grinned. "I saw someone similar-" Her smile fell and her expression turned into utter horror. Brian's jaw fell to the floor and he looked at the man beside me in complete astonishment.
I cleared my throat and walked out like nothing happened. But on the inside, I was in a turmoil. My god, what am going to do? s**t s**t s**t.
And when I heard the elevator doors close behind me, I collapsed to the floor.
"Hailey!!!" Lexi screamed in panic. "What the hell just happened?"
"I want to die" I sniffled and leaned my back on the cold hard floor. "I can't-" I swallowed rest of the words, still not believing what happened seconds ago.
"Hailey" Brian said. "How did it happen? I mean, why the hell did he arrive early?"
"I can cry right now" I said as I stared at the ceiling above me.
"s**t" Lexi folded her arms above her head and started pacing around. "What do we do now?"
Brian leaned on the wall and closed his eyes, trying to calm himself down. "I think I'm going to have a panic attack"
The other elevator opened and a group people came out. They gave me weird looks and some even walked over me.
"Look at me! I've been stepped over" I cried. "No one cares for me"
"Stop being so dramatic. What are we going to do now?"
"First cry then-" I breathed. "hand over the resignation letter"
"Do you think it's so simple now that you got caught for deceiving the CEO?"
"I just hiccuped" I whined.
"It's more than a hiccup now. Go and talk to the chief"
I sat straight. "I can't put him in more trouble"
"You already put him in more trouble" Lexi gave me a pointed look. "Now up on your feet" She ordered and I warily stood up.
I followed her to the chief's room and on our way there, we saw many people sitting on the chairs of either sides of the hallway.
"What's going on?" I asked Lexi.
"Today is the interview to select a new secretary for the chief"
"Great" I sighed. "If I get the chief fired then I'm also gonna get the new secretary fired"
"Executives don't get fired that easily" Brian grumbled. "But he'll be in great trouble. And you on the other hand-" He looked at me. "will be wiped off the face of the earth"
"Aww thanks for the sweet words Brian" I said sarcastically.
Lexi knocked on the chief's door.
"Come in"
We walked inside and the chief looked up with a smile. "What brings you children here?"
"Hailey got caught" Lexi said and I looked at her in disbelief.
"Don't say it so straight forward" I hissed.
"Shut up" Lexi hissed back.
The chief pursed his lips into a thin line and signed heavily. "Well we can't do anything now" He leaned back on his chair. "We just have to wait for the consequences"
"I'm sorry chief"
"It's all right. You can't hide from him forever. Did he recognise you?"
"I think so" I shrugged. "He smiled"
"He smiled?" Chief asked me in shock.
I narrowed my eyes. "Well I think it's a smirk but-"
"Jesus! You are in great trouble Hailey"
"How am I in trouble?" I asked in confusion. "I mean I'm already in trouble. But you know what I mean-"
"When Ian Kingston reacts to you that means you are in grave danger"
I blinked. "Right. I just have quickly hand over my resignation letter right?" I nodded to myself. "Yeah that's it. Gotta go" I turned on my heel. "and sorry chief"
I sprinted out the door and raced to my desk. I quickly turned on my computer and began typing my resignation letter.
With my work experience and my qualifications I might find another good job. Not as high paying as this but at least I wouldn't have to hide and feel guilty all the time
"Are you really quitting?" Lexi came and asked in shock.
"Do I have a choice? I don't want to get on the bad side of a freaking CEO. I've heard enough stories to know how dangerous it can be. And-" I pounded on my chest. "a hard working employee like me can get a job anywhere. I'm not boasting but you know what I mean-"
"Hailey" Our VP called and I looked up.
"Yes ma'am"
She was staring weirdly at the telephone on top of her desk, almost uncertain of it's entire purpose. "M-Mr. Kingston wants to speak to you personally"
She glanced up. "What the hell did you do Hailey?"
I knocked on the door but no response. I knocked again.
"You can go inside" I turned as Daniel spoke next to me.
"Okay" I hesitantly opened the door and walked in.
I was inside a large room with a leather couch in the middle and a coal black bookcase lining the entire left hand wall. In it were rows and rows of books about business and on either sides of it were two large plants protruding from it's marble pots.
At the front was a silver table with a laptop and a glass desk sign that read Ian's name and his position. Everything in here was neatly placed and for some reason I felt frightened. As I should be duh!
I trailed my eyes upward and saw Ian Kingston, standing in front of the glass wall, staring at the city below him.
I swallowed anxiously and slowly walked forward, stopping at the front of his desk.
"Hailey Evans, isn't it?" He asked with his cold steel voice.
"Yes, Mr. Kingston" I wiped my clammy hands on my pants and tried my best to sound normal.
"It seems I have made a mistake" He said reluctantly. "But you-" He turned. "without correcting it, used it for your own benefit" His voice came out as an insult and I felt deeply offended.
"Sir I-"
"Did I tell you to speak Miss Evans?" He raised a brow and I clamped my mouth shut.
"You made another person lose their job" He took several steps towards me. "You were selfish, arrogant and inconsiderate. Am I right, Miss Evans?
Hearing his insults, I took a sharp intake of breath to control myself from clawing at his face.
"Mr. Kingston" I forced a smile to my lips. "May I say a few words before you fire me?"
He leaned against his table and folded his arms across his chest. "Go on"
"You. f*****g. Asshole!" I bursted out and the corners of his lips twitched up into a smile.
"You egotistical self centered piece of s**t! How dare you accuse me of being selfish, arrogant and inconsiderate?" I strode forward and jabbed my finger on his chest. "You of all people"
Without getting irked by my words his smile widened and that only made my blood boil faster.
"You're the one who makes people lose their jobs. You cause it. And you think you are a saint Ian Kingston?" I asked through gritted teeth.
"Egotistical and self centered are synonymous" He answered.
I wrinkled my nose. "What?"
"They are synonyms"
"What does it have to do with anything?"
"There's no fun cussing in similar words" He smirked. "Say something else"
I blinked. Is he insane? "Okay. Umm you-you" I stuttered, searching for words. "Son of a bastard"
Ian laughed. "You mean, son of a b***h?"
"I don't want to curse your mother"
"Oh you'll want to in the future"
I frowned. What does that even mean?
I shook it off and continued.
"Anyways, before you called I was halfway through writing my resignation letter. So I'm not a selfish, arrogant and an inconsiderate person like you said. I'm much much much better" I pointed out. "And right now I have to go and finish it. So I'll leave" I turned around. "Bye! See you in hell"
"I'm not done, Miss Evans"
I spun around. "What is it that you want?"
He smirked. "Oh Miss Evans I want a lot of things but right now I want you to stay"
"What?" I asked in confusion.
He straighted up and tucked his hands inside his pockets. "I'm not firing you. You can keep your job"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why?"
"Are you questioning me when you should be thankful?"
Again I inhaled deeply and mentally counted to ten to calm myself. "I mean why are you making an exception?"
He pursed his lips, thinking hard. "Well I don't want to make an exception just because you're pretty but for different reasons, I have to"
Did he just call me pretty? I quickly ignored it and continued. "I'm feeling very very suspicious right now"
"You should"
"Mr. Kingston" I breathed. "The speed at which my blood is boiling right now- I could go to a hospital"
He chuckled. "You're very funny Miss Evans" He stepped forward. "But I still haven't forgotten what you did. You deceived me. You defied me" He leaned in, our noses almost touching. "And there will be consequences"
Then he smirked. "You're dismissed"
...
"That son of a b***h!" I cursed out as we walked through the parking lot.
"I thought you don't curse mothers" Lexi said in surprise.
"He said I'll want to in the future. So I'm practicing"
"What does that even mean?" Brian cried out.
"I don't know okay?" I threw my hands up. "Nothing he said made sense"
"Well the good thing is you don't have to hide anymore" Lexi nudged my elbow. "And you can keep your job"
"Plus" Brian jumped in. "Mr. Kingston spoke to you. That means he considers you as important"
"I rather be trash than be important to him"
"But if you-"
"Miss Benson" We turned as someone called Lexi.
It was Daniel Collins. He strode towards us and glared at Lexi. "Did you threaten one of our staff to give you the CEO's schedule?"
Lexi's jaw dropped in shock. "Threaten? Is that what she told you?"
Daniel stayed silent, waiting impatiently for Lexi's answer.
She scoffed. "I can't believe it. I asked her, well-" She paused. "Not in a nice way but that doesn't equal to being threatened"
"So you did?" Daniel raised a brow. "You asked for something that you're not supposed to have?"
"We asked it for survival" Lexi whined and I could see Daniel's face getting red with anger.
"Give it back" He demanded.
Lexi muttered a curse under her breath and took her notebook out, in which she had clipped the schedule.
Daniel grabbed it and flipped through the pages. He read the part that had 'tips on how to avoid the Kingston' and I was positive I would die out of embarrassment if he goes and tell it to his boss.
"Miss Evans" I looked up as he called me.
He was reading the paragraph where Lexi wrote, 'avoid going into any event where the CEO would be present'.
"You must attend every event where your attendance is required" He stated firmly.
"What if I do not?" I asked in a challenging tone.
"If you do not-" He closed the book. "there will be consequences"
"Oh my god, you too?" I threw my head back in annoyance. "Uhh I already heard it from one guy. I don't need his minion repeating it"
Daniel scowled at the word minion and I felt guilty for talking so thoughtlessly.
"Oh sorry. I didn't mean to offend" But my apology only deepened his scowl.
He took a deep breath. "Miss Evans, as I said you must attend every event where you attendance is required. And the company anniversary party, it's a must that everyone attend" He narrowed his eyes. "Including you" He paused and said in a more demanding tone. "Specially you"
Then he turned on his heels and walked back the way he came in.
"Specially me?" I frowned. "Why is that? Does Ian Kingston want to show me his fiancé and prove that he also can be human once in a while?"
"I don't know" Lexi shook her head. "But I have a feeling something bad is going to happen" I angled my skateboard to the ground and pushed off, skating towards the ATC with my earphones plugged into my ears.
I gave my usual good morning salute to the security and rode inside the lobby.
Hanging from the two tall pillars on either sides was a large banner that read 'Celebrating the 35th anniversary of the ATC' oh yes I forgot to mention. Today is the big day.
Not as the 'annivesary big day' but as the 'fiancé big day'.
It's what everybody had been talking about for the past two weeks. Be it the press, the public or the employees - simply everyone. And me, I love gossip
This fiancé thing was such a big deal because no one, not even the paparazzi had ever seen the young handsome billionaire dating anyone in his entire life.
So for that reason the amount of drama that had been happening here for the past few weeks is enough to change Ian Kingston's name into Ian Kardashian.
As of example, last week we literally had the paparazzi breaking into our company like some thieves.
And one even snapped a photo of me trying to gulp down a sandwich in the middle of a meeting. Ha not very cool when our VP saw the picture.
"ARE YOU FREAKING SKATING INSIDE THE OFFICE?" Someone screamed in my ear and I toppled over the skateboard, falling flat on my butt.
"Ouch" I groaned and looked up to see our VP glowering down at me with her hands on her hips.
"What kind of indecency is this Evans? And-and" Her eyes fell on my sneakers and her nostrils flared.
"Why aren't you wearing heels?"
"Umm" I racked my brain for an excuse. "B-because today is not that much of a working day" I winced at how stupid it sounds.
"And why do you think like that?"
"It's the company anniversary" I gave her a cheeky smile and her face twisted into an angry scowl.
"You, Evans-" She pointed a finger at me. "I'll show you how much of a working day today can be" Then she turned on her heels and went on her way.
I groaned and wearily got up. Witch I muttered a curse under my breath and dusted off my pants. Knowing our VP would break my skateboard if I take it to our floor, I hid it behind a plant pot in the lobby before going back to the marketing department.
...
"So" Lexi spun in her chair. "I have two dresses but I can't select what to wear. What do you think? Blue or white"
"Blue?" I scrunched up my nose. "Well send me a picture of it. Then I'll select"
"Okie dokie" She nodded. "So what are you going to wear tonight?"
"I don't know" I kept my chin on my palm and pouted. "I have to see"
"Brian, what are you going to wear?"
"I'm gonna wear a red dress with laces" Brian said sarcastically and I snorted, seeing Lexi's lips curl into a frown.
"Stupid Brian" Lexi stuck her tongue out and angrily went back to working.
"Hailey" The VP bellowed from across the room.
What now? I mumbled and looked up. "Yes ma'am"
"Come here" She demanded.
Reluctantly I walked over to her and she threw a file to my hand. "Take this to Mr. Lambert. He needs it immediately"
"Mr. Lambert?" I almost yelled.
"Yes" The VP leaned back in her chair and narrowed her eyes at me. "Is there any problem Evans?"
"H-he" I stuttered. "He's one of the CEO's staff"
"So?" VP raised a brow. "Are you defying my orders now?"
I shook my head. "No ma'am sorry" I forced a smile to my lips. "I'll go" f**k!
Since our last encounter two weeks ago I haven't seen Ian Kingston - which is a good thing.
Neither he nor his minion decided to suddenly materialize to mention the 'consequences' - which is also a good thing. So my life went pretty much back to normal, except for the hectic bustle in the ATC thanks to an anonymous fiancé.
But now I fear it's going to change. Will he show me the consequences he mentioned earlier? Oh God help me!
With dread I took the elevator and went up to the CEO's floor. As I reached, I scanned the floor for Mr. Lambert but he was nowhere to be found.
I plodded to one of the employees and asked. "Excuse me. Where's Mr. Lambert?"
"He's in a meeting with the CEO"
"Umm..." At the mention of CEO sweat started trickling down my forehead. "Can you go and give this file to him? He needs it immediately"
"I'm not your assistant" She stated in an emotionless tone while tapping on her keyboard, not sparing a glance at me.
Damn these 'elite' staff. I took a deep breath to calm my temper and crossed the hall to the meeting room.
I cleared my throat several times, then wiped the sweat in my forehead before finally knocking on the door.
Daniel opened it and immediately, my eyes traveled over his shoulder to Ian Kingston, who was sitting at the head of the table talking to Mr. Lambert and a few others.
My grip on the file tightened and at that moment all I wanted to do was just disappear. I was doing such a good job in avoiding that arrogant stupid narcissistic bastard but now all was in vain.
Mr. Lambert's eyes fell on me. "Are you from the marketing?"
As he asked, Ian turned and our eyes met. I stopped breathing. Seeing me, the corners of his lips curled into an amused smile and he leaned back in his chair, his eyes still fixed on me.
And I had to be happy that I didn't drop dead instantly.
"Come in. Did you bring the proposal?"
"W-what?" I wrenched my gaze away from Ian to Mr. Lambert. "Oh yes the file. Yeah ummm... I have it"
Gathering up all the courage I could muster up I strode to the front of the table and gave the file to Mr. Lambert. And the entire time Ian watched me with that smirk of his.
His eye traveled down my body to my breast to my hips and then to my legs, almost as if he was sizing me up.
I frowned. Pervert
"I'm sorry what?" Mr. Lambert asked.
"What?" I asked back in shock.
"You said something"
Shit! I had said it out loud. Immediately my gaze fell on Ian and I could see him stifling his laughter, a hand over his mouth.
"Nothing" I forced a smile to my lips. "I said nothing. Umm... I'll go now"
I quickly scrambled out of the meeting room and slammed myself on the wall with a hand over my heart.
Oh my god! That was so embarrassing.
