EACH STEP GREW MORE cautious as Aithein approached the entrance to the meadow. Aithein couldn’t see Chako, but he could smell him. Dani noticed that Aithein looked like a child searching for something in the dark, relying on his other senses.
“He’s up ahead,” Aithein whispered. “What should I say to him?”
Dani saw Chako clear as day. He guarded the path no more than twenty paces away. She was puzzled as to why Aithein could not see him. “I’ll fly to him. Stay keen to his position and be civil.”
Dani left a trail of sparkling light.
Chako was uncomfortable at the sight of Dani. He sneered at her as he watched Aithein approach. “How appropriate it is that the blind leads the blind to the Great Faelen Tree.”
