Chapter Five

Amara stood frozen for a moment, her mind spinning with conflicting emotions. The echoes of Liam’s parting words clung to her like a dark cloud, threatening to overshadow the glimmer of hope she had just begun to nurture. She glanced at Alexander, whose steely composure remained unshaken by the tense encounter. Yet, she couldn’t help but feel a small surge of doubt creeping in. What if Liam wasn’t done with her? What if this was only the beginning? “Are you okay?” Alexander’s voice broke through her thoughts, steady and comforting. His hand on her arm was firm yet gentle, grounding her as the world around her spun. Amara nodded, though she wasn’t entirely sure of the answer. “I will be,” she murmured, turning her gaze away from where Liam had disappeared. “I just… I didn’t expect to see him again.” Alexander’s jaw tightened, a flash of something dark crossing his blue eyes. You won’t have to deal with him. I’ll make sure of it. There it was again, the promise of protection, the same one he had offered her from the moment they met. Amara wanted to believe him, to trust that he could shield her from Liam’s malice. But she knew better than anyone that some battles couldn’t be fought by others. Liam had hurt her deeply, in ways that went beyond mere betrayal. And she wasn’t sure if anyone could truly protect her from that kind of pain. Still, standing beside Alexander, she felt something she hadn’t experienced in a long time: safety. And that was something she couldn’t easily dismiss. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the murmur of the gallery’s crowd. Alexander’s expression softened slightly, and he nodded, his hand lingering on her arm for a moment longer before he dropped it. “Let’s get out of here,” he said. “You don’t need to be around all this right now.” Amara hesitated. The idea of leaving the gallery felt like admitting defeat, like letting Liam win. But she was also exhausted emotionally and mentally. The weight of seeing him again, of confronting the past she had tried so hard to forget, was more than she could handle at the moment. “Okay,” she agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. They slipped out of the gallery without drawing much attention, Alexander’s presence ensuring that no one dared to approach them. As they stepped out into the cool night air, Amara took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. Alexander led her to his car, a sleek black vehicle that suited him perfectly elegant, powerful, and imposing. He opened the door for her, his movements smooth and deliberate, as if nothing in the world could ever fluster him. As she settled into the passenger seat, Amara couldn’t help but steal a glance at him. He was so different from Liam in every way. Where Liam had been careless and chaotic, Alexander was calculated and precise. Where Liam had been deceitful, Alexander seemed honest, almost to a fault. And yet, there was still that nagging voice in the back of her mind, warning her that no one could be trusted completely. Not after what she had been through. The drive was quiet, the city lights flashing by as they sped through the streets. Amara stared out the window, lost in thought. She hadn’t even realized where they were going until Alexander pulled up in front of a towering building, its glass exterior shimmering under the streetlights. “This is my place,” Alexander said, his voice calm but with an edge of finality, as if the decision had already been made. Amara turned to him, her brows furrowed in confusion. “Why are we here?” You need a place to clear your head. Somewhere safe, he said, his eyes locking with hers. “I don’t think you should be alone tonight.” Her heart skipped a beat. The thought of being alone, especially after what had just happened, sent a shiver down her spine. But staying with Alexander? In his home? That felt like crossing a line she wasn’t sure she was ready to cross. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m not asking for anything,” Alexander assured her, his tone gentle but firm. “I just don’t want you to be alone.” Amara hesitated. She wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that his intentions were pure. But the memory of Liam’s betrayal loomed large in her mind, a constant reminder that people weren’t always what they seemed. Still, there was something about Alexander, something that made her feel safe in a way she hadn’t felt in years. Maybe it was his strength, his quiet confidence, or the way he had defended her against Liam without hesitation. Whatever it was, it drew her to him, despite the walls she had built around herself. “Okay,” she said quietly, her voice barely audible. Alexander nodded and stepped out of the car, walking around to open her door. He offered her his hand, and after a moment’s hesitation, Amara took it. His grip was firm and steady, grounding her as they made their way into the building. As they rode the elevator up to Alexander’s penthouse, Amara’s mind raced. What was she doing? This was insane. She barely knew him, and yet here she was, walking into his home like it was the most natural thing in the world. But the moment the elevator doors opened, revealing the sleek, modern interior of Alexander’s penthouse, all her doubts melted away. The space was beautiful, clean lines, floor-to-ceiling windows offering a breathtaking view of the city, and a sense of calm that seemed to wrap around her like a warm blanket. “Make yourself at home,” Alexander said, his voice soft as he led her inside. “I’ll get you something to drink.” Amara nodded, too overwhelmed to respond. She wandered over to the windows, staring out at the city below. The lights stretched out for miles, twinkling like stars against the dark sky. For the first time in what felt like forever, she felt a sense of peace. But just as she began to relax, her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her back to reality. Amara hesitated, her hand hovering over the phone. She knew who it would be. There was only one person who would text her at this hour. Liam. Her heart pounded as she pulled out her phone, her fingers trembling as she unlocked the screen. Sure enough, there it was—a message from Liam, the words sending a chill down her spine. “You can’t hide from me, Amara. I’ll always find you.”
