Chapter 6

Zeus signaled for his men to stand down as the firing slowed. He approached Evelyn with caution, his revolver drawn. "Are you okay?" he inquired, relaxing his tone somewhat. Evelyn nodded, still stunned. "I'm all right." Zeus observed Evelyn's distress and decided it was time for her to go. "Come on, let's get you home," he said as he drew his revolver and led her to his car. Evelyn followed him, still reeling from what had just happened. She couldn't believe she'd gotten herself into such a precarious situation, and she was thankful to Zeus for sparing her life. Zeus did not ask for her address when they entered the automobile; instead, he simply started the car and drove away. Evelyn watched as the city streets flew by, knowing exactly where they were going. It was her apartment's layout. Only the sound of the car's engine disturbed the silence. Evelyn glanced out the window, lost in concentration, as they drove through the dark and lonely streets. Her mind was still whirling from what had just occurred, and she couldn't escape the horror that had gripped her. Zeus sensed her anxiety and reached over to switch on the radio. Evelyn relaxed somewhat as soft music filled the vehicle, happy about the diversion. As they neared her apartment building, Zeus pulled the car to a stop outside. He turned to face her, his expression serious. "I'll walk you up to your apartment," he said, his voice firm. Evelyn hesitated, unsure if she wanted to be alone with him. But she knew that she couldn't stay in the car forever, and she nodded her agreement. Zeus got out of the car and opened the door for her. Evelyn stepped out onto the sidewalk, feeling the chill of the night air on her skin. Zeus took her hand and led her toward the entrance of the building, his grip firm and reassuring. As they rode the elevator up to her floor, Evelyn couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude towards Zeus. Despite his rough exterior, he had saved her life and had been nothing but protective and supportive throughout the whole ordeal. Maybe he wasn't as cold-hearted as she had originally thought. After a few minutes of silence, Evelyn finally spoke up. "Thank you for saving me back there," she said quietly. Zeus smiled, but there was a darkness in his eyes that made Evelyn shiver. "That's what I do, Evelyn. I protect what's mine." He knew he had to tread carefully with her. She was different from the women he usually dealt with—she had a strong will and a sharp mind. But he also knew that he needed to offer her protection, or else she would never be safe. "Evelyn, I know this may seem sudden, but I think you should reconsider the offer that I gave you. You saw what happened today. These people won't stop until they get what they want. And I can offer you the protection you need," Zeus said. Evelyn looked up at him with a mixture of fear and anxiety in her eyes. "What are you suggesting, Zeus? That I work for you? That I become one of your girls?" she asked, her voice trembling. Zeus shook his head. "No, Evelyn. I would never force you to do something like that. I am offering you a decent job as my personal doctor. You would work directly for me, and I would make sure that you were safe." Evelyn bristled at the suggestion. "I don't need your protection, Zeus. I can take care of myself. Also, I barely know you, Zeus. We've only met twice, and both times, my life has been threatened. You're bad luck for me." Zeus narrowed his eyes, his temper beginning to rise. He didn't like being talked back to, especially by a woman. But he knew that he had to control himself if he wanted to win her over. "Evelyn, I'm not asking you to make a decision right now. Take some time to think about it. But know that I can offer you something that no one else can: protection. And I think you know that you need it," he said, his voice firm. Evelyn shook her head. "I don't need you, Zeus. I want a calm and steady life, and that can’t be achieved with you by my side." Zeus raised an eyebrow. "Calm life! Really? Because the last two times we've met, you've been in danger. What makes you think that won't happen again?" Evelyn gritted her teeth. She hated that he was right. But she also hated how he was making her feel—scared, vulnerable, and helpless. "I don't know, Zeus. Maybe I'll just avoid you from now on. That seems like the safest option," she said, trying to sound confident. Zeus chuckled. "You think that will stop these people from coming after you? They're not after me, Evelyn. They're after you. And they won't stop until they get what they want." "But why would they be after me? I am nothing but a normal doctor. I don't even have enmity with a single soul; then why are those men targeting me? Why?" Evelyn wanted answers. She was confused, scared, and panicked. She didn't know what to do. Zeus, on the other hand, had all the answers. He knew that Evelyn was in danger because of him. He knew that it must be the work of one of his many enemies. Zeus's attention on Evelyn caused her to be in danger. Still, Zeus was being selfish by forcing Evelyn into the mafia. Zeus should keep his distance from her to keep her safe. But he knew that it was his only chance to make Evelyn come into his life willingly. "I also do not know who those people were, but I promise that I will investigate it and give you an answer", He tried to sound sincere. Evelyn took a step back, fear creeping into her heart. She knew she needed his protection. But she didn't want to admit it. "I'll think about it, Zeus. But I can't make any promises," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Zeus smiled, sensing that he was getting through to her. "That's all I ask, Evelyn. Just consider it. And in the meantime, I'll make sure that you're safe. I won't let anything happen to you." Evelyn nodded, still feeling unsure. She knew that Zeus was dangerous, but she also knew that he was the only one who could protect her. As she turned to leave, Zeus called out to her. "Evelyn, one more thing. You saved my life at the ball, and today I saved yours. We're even now, right?" Evelyn turned to face him, her eyes flashing with anger. "Don't you dare try to guilt me into this, Zeus? We had a deal: I saved your life, and you saved mine. That's it. Don't try to make it into something it's not." Zeus surrendered by raising his hands. "All right, Evelyn." Fair enough. I'm not going to push it any further. "Please know that I am grateful for what you did for me," Zeus added, his tone softening. Evelyn nodded, the tension between them releasing. "Thank you, Zeus." And thank you for keeping me safe today." Zeus grinned. "Of course, Evelyn." "Please let me know if you require anything." Evelyn couldn't help but feel torn as she turned to go. On the one hand, she knew Zeus was deadly, and being around him put her at risk. However, she couldn't deny the sense of security that came with having him by her side. She was aware that she needed to thoroughly consider her options before making a decision. But for now, she was grateful for Zeus's protection, and that was enough.
