Chloe stiffened, her eyes wide with alarm. Jordan remained calm, unlike her, and put a finger across his lips to shush her. He tiptoed to the door and peeped out. Chloe peered through a c***k in the wood behind her seat. Her heart split in two, half sinking down to her stomach, the other racing to her head. Outside, approaching the cabin, was the town’s sheriff, Bill Gordon, alongside Niles and another young man she could not recognize, though she guessed he must be Niles’ brother or close friend.
