Freedom

"So, Amelia, what are you going to do now that you are free?" Sadie asks me excitedly. "First, I want to go to the office and meet everybody as well as look at my own office. I have not seen the place in person yet and I really want to know what I am working with." I explain. "We should go out tonight. We should party." She says sounding exactly like my younger sister has always sounded while we were growing up. "I am sorry but I do not want to party. Actually, after I go to the office I need to make a doctor's appointment." I admit. "For what? Please tell me that you are wanting to get on birth control now so that you can finally have some fun." She says with a wink. I take a deep breath before facing the truth. I have to tell my sister if I am going to be sure that Carl never finds out the truth about me. He can dig all he wants into my past and can even learn the truth about how I became CEO but I absolutely do not want him learning about this baby. "No, I will not be needing birth control. Sadie, I am pregnant." I tell her reluctantly. She just stares at me in shock for a while as she processes exactly what I told her. It takes her a few minutes before she turns and stares out of the window for a while as I drive. I have my own driver but after spending years stuck in an unwelcoming home I really wanted to be able to drive myself somewhere for the first time. "Does Carl know?" She asks me quietly. "No, he does not. I did not want to risk him changing his mind about our divorce." I admit. "Good. We are going to raise this child without him. I have no doubts that your life is going to be much easier now." She says confidently. I turn quickly and give her a shocked look. This is not the turn that I expected this conversation to take. I honestly thought that she might try to convince me to get an abortion. The fact that she did not try to change my mind about anything makes me want to cry. Reaching over, I give her hand a squeeze. "Thank you, Sadie. You really are everything that I needed. I cannot believe that I went this long without being able to have you in my life. A phone call really just does not cut it." I tell her. "From now on you never have to be rid of me." She agrees. It is a couple of hours to get to my new office. I did not want to risk having to see Carl so when we planned the business we decided that we were going to make it a couple of states away. That way, we should never have to come into contact with him. Now that I know that I am pregnant, I am even happier to have made that decision in the past. I should be able to raise my child without ever having to deal with him again. "Here we are. This is the Corporate building for our business. There are many more smaller offices as well but most of the time we will be working out of this building." Sadie informs me. Before long, I am parked in a pretty new CEO spot and heading into the building with my sister beside me. As soon as we walk in I am blown away by how professional and clean the entire building looks. It is beyond what I would have thought based off of the pictures that she has been sending me. She gives me a quick tour and it does not take long to see just how loved she is by the entire company. Everybody stops to smile and wave at her as she passes. Occasionally, she even stops to ask somebody about their personal life. I have never seen this side of Sadie but I have to admit that it is impressive after all of this time. "Here is your office. Mine is right next door but you have the biggest one being the CEO and all." She tells me with a smile. "You have done phenomenally here Sadie. I cannot believe everything that you have managed to accomplish since I was gone." I tell her honestly. "I could not have done any of it without you. If it were not for your specific instructions then I never would have gotten this far." She assures me. "Still, this is impressive. Thank you for doing all of this for me." I tell her. "I did it for us. From now on, we will never have to make a business deal like the one your mother made with Carl again. We will always be able to stand on our own two feet. Next, let's make you a doctor's appointment." She says. I happily agree as she quickly pulls up the local offices for OB/GYN's. She shows me how to use the new computer while she searches for the best local doctor. It does not take long to find the one that has the best reviews and call them to make an appointment. Even though I expect to have to wait for a while for my appointment, my last name must mean something in this area now because they find a time to fit me in the very same day. As nervous as I am about going to the doctor I know that I will be relieved to know what is going on for sure. Right now, everything seems like a dream. One that I am not sure how to handle but I will need to get it over with. If I am going to be the mother that I want to be then I need to start right now. No matter how early it is.
