When I wake up in the morning it takes me a while to remember everything that happened the day before. Much of it feels like a dream. The type of dream that I never want to wake up from. When I open my eyes and see the furniture and the color of my comforter, my face breaks out in a huge smile. Maybe it is something that I do not have to wake up from since it does not seem to be a dream after all.
There is a hesitant knock on the door as I get up and pick out my outfit for the day. Even though most of my clothes are in the room with the washing machine there are some outfits in the closet for me to pick as well. Immediately, I settle on a black pencil skirt ensemble with a loose, white flowing blouse under a matching blac jacket.
Walking to the door, I open it up so that Sadie can come through. She seems slightly surprised at the fact that I am already up and moving around. When she walks over to where I have my outfit for the day hung up, she turns and gives me an even funnier look.
"What, did I do something strange?" I ask her confused.
"I just remember that when we were teenagers you never woke up early. I used to have to go into your room and practically tackle you to get you out of bed. Not only are you out of bed, but you are also already getting ready to go into the office for the day." She explains.
"I am sure that we have both changed a lot over the years. I mean, I am a recent divorcee and soon to be a single parent." I point out.
"Well, when you put it that way,..."She trails off leading us into a giggling fit.
We go to the kitchen to grab a quick bowl of fresh fruit and yogurt before heading out to my new car. I am more nervous than I expected to be when it comes to my first day of work. I want everybody to take me seriously when I get there and not expect me to be some boring housewife. When I think of it that way though, going from a housewife to the worst husband I could have expected, this should be a walk in the park.
When we pull into the office I am happy to see that there are only a few people already here working. I wanted to make sure that I was one of the first ones to show up for the workday today. In order to make the proper impression I would like to be in my office and deep in my work by the time others arrive.
There is a pile of paperwork on my desk when I walk into it. I have no idea where to start yet I find myself smiling at the prospect of having a simple work life. Sadie walks into my office with me and takes the seat on the other side of my desk to help me learn everything that running this business entails. I might have run parts of it from afar but being here and running it hands on is a completely different process.
By the time lunch rolls around, we have barely made a dent in the pile of papers and my head feels like it is spinning. Already, I can find a couple of things that need changed to help things run smoother here as well as some other companies that we might need to try to make some business deals with.
"Let's head out to grab some lunch. It looks like you could use a break and you really should be taking care of yourself." She tells me.
I nod in agreement and stand up to stretch my muscles. I have not spent that long sitting in a chair since I was in high school. Maybe I could even have a gym added in to help everyone keep moving. I would really welcome somewhere to use some of my muscles that have went unused ever since I got here.
When we get outside, Sadie slides into the driver seat and drives us towards a salad bar. It is not exactly my favorite food but I do appreciate the healthy meal at this point. My stomach is not exactly feeling the best either. Must be the morning sickness kicking in already.
"Do not freak out but I am pretty sure that we were followed from the office all of the way here." Sadie says as we walk into the restaurant.
I turn quickly before realizing that that would only give me away and kept walking. The entire drive here I never once looked behind us to see who was behind us. There technically could be almost anybody following me today. It is not a habit to look behind me and watch those that have been following me.
"Who would follow me?" I ask quietly.
"It could be almost anybody at this point. It could be some media wanting to update their story on your marriage and now divorce, it could be an old friend trying to reconnect, it could even be your ex husband following you." She says with a shrug.
The idea of Carl following me seems a bit insane at this point. I am not sure what he would gain from following me. If he were to be following me or have somebody else do it for him, then I have to worry about my secret getting out.
"Why would he follow me though?" I ask worriedly.
Sadie shares a concerned glance with me before saying, "Well, you did throw him for a bit of a loop recently. I am sure that he wants more information on you now that you showed him your cards at your divorce. There is absolutely no way that he was expecting that one."
