CHAPTER 6 — YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
Nobody moved.
The music still played softly in the background. People still talked around us.
But for Adrian?
The entire world had stopped.
He stared at the woman near the staircase like he couldn’t breathe.
And honestly…
I couldn’t either.
Because she looked exactly like the girl in the photographs.
Exactly.
The same eyes. The same face. The same dark hair Adrian used to look at with love.
The woman swallowed nervously.
“Hi, Adrian.”
His jaw tightened hard.
“You’re dead.”
The words came out quiet. Broken.
Pain flashed across her face immediately.
“I know.”
“What kind of sick joke is this?”
“It’s not a joke.”
Adrian laughed suddenly, but there was no happiness in it.
Just anger.
“You disappeared for two years.”
“I didn’t have a choice.”
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
That sentence hit hard.
Even the woman looked like it physically hurt her.
People nearby had started whispering now.
Watching.
Adrian noticed too.
His expression darkened instantly.
“Come with me.”
The woman nodded quickly.
Then Adrian grabbed my wrist gently before I could stay behind.
“You too.”
The ride back to the apartment was painfully silent.
The woman sat across from us twisting her fingers nervously while Adrian stared out the window like he was trying not to lose control.
I finally couldn’t take it anymore.
“So… are we going to pretend this is normal?”
Neither of them answered.
I crossed my arms.
“Because personally, I think the dead returning deserves at least one explanation.”
The woman let out a weak laugh.
Adrian didn’t react.
Finally, she looked at me carefully.
“You must hate me already.”
“I don’t even know you.”
“You know enough.”
Honestly? She wasn’t wrong.
The second we entered the apartment, Adrian turned toward her sharply.
“Talk.”
No warmth. No softness.
Just anger barely being controlled.
The woman inhaled shakily.
“My father lied to me after the accident. He told me you moved on… that you stopped looking for me.”
Adrian stared at her coldly.
“And you believed him?”
“I was injured, Adrian.”
“They told me you died.”
“They told me you left.”
Silence filled the room.
God.
These two were exhausting.
I stayed near the kitchen quietly watching them.
The tension between them felt huge.
Like years of pain were standing between them.
Finally Adrian spoke again.
“Why are you here now?”
The woman hesitated.
Then quietly said—
“Because someone found me.”
Something changed in Adrian’s expression instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who?”
She looked down.
“I don’t know.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
Adrian ran a hand through his hair before pacing away frustrated.
For the first time since meeting him…
He looked completely lost.
The woman noticed me watching her and gave me a small sad smile.
“I’m Elena.”
There it was.
A name for the ghost.
“I’m Lena,” I answered carefully.
Her smile faded slightly.
“You’re beautiful.”
That immediately felt uncomfortable.
I awkwardly crossed my arms.
“Thanks… I think?”
She glanced briefly toward Adrian before looking back at me.
“He never lets people get close to him anymore.”
Something painful twisted unexpectedly inside my chest.
Because deep down…
I already knew that.
