“What are you doing?”
I nearly dropped the photo.
I turned too quickly and found Adrian standing in the doorway.
And he looked furious.
Not loud anger.
The dangerous kind. The quiet kind.
I carefully placed the frame back down.
“I was just looking around—”
“You entered a private room.”
His voice was ice cold.
I crossed my arms defensively.
“The door was open.”
“That doesn’t mean you belong here.”
Ouch.
The tension in the room instantly became unbearable.
Adrian walked past me quickly and grabbed the photographs from the table like he couldn’t stand seeing them exposed.
His jaw tightened.
Like even touching the pictures hurt him.
“Who is she?” I asked softly before I could stop myself.
Mistake.
His entire expression darkened.
“That is not your business.”
“She mattered to you.”
“Enough.”
The word cut sharply through the room.
I stared at him.
Really stared.
And suddenly I understood something.
Adrian wasn’t cold because he enjoyed it.
He was cold because it was the only way he knew how to survive.
“You loved her,” I whispered.
Silence.
Then Adrian laughed quietly.
Not happily.
The kind of laugh people make when something hurts too much.
“That word means nothing.”
“That’s not true.”
His eyes snapped toward mine instantly.
“You know absolutely nothing about love.”
The way he said it made my chest ache unexpectedly.
Because he sounded angry at himself more than me.
I stepped closer carefully.
“What happened to her?”
Wrong question.
Adrian suddenly slammed the photo frame onto the table hard enough to make me flinch.
“I said stop asking.”
The room fell silent.
My heartbeat sounded painfully loud.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then Adrian closed his eyes briefly like he regretted losing control.
When he spoke again, his voice was quieter.
“Leave the room, Lena.”
I should’ve listened.
But something about the sadness in his face stopped me from walking away.
“You looked happy with her,” I said softly.
That hurt him.
I saw it immediately.
And somehow… that hurt me too.
“She’s dead.”
The words shattered the air between us.
