Aurora's POV
The first thing I noticed when she woke up was the silence
It pressed in from all sides, thick and suffocating, broken only by the faint drip of water somewhere nearby. My head throbbed as though I'd been hit by a truck, and my limbs felt heavy, like they were weighed down by chains.
I blinked groggily, trying to make sense of her surroundings. The dim light filtering through the small, barred window told her that she was no longer in the observatory. This place was cold—too cold—and unfamiliar.
My pulse quickened as memories of the ambush flooded back. The masked figures, the key, the wind… and then Eris.
Eris.
The memory hit me like a punch to the gut. The way Eris had appeared out of nowhere, the way her cold fingers had gripped my wrist, the power and possessiveness that radiated from her—it made my skin crawl. And then there was that vial… the drug.
I had passed out. And now, I was here.
I struggled to sit up, my muscles aching with every movement. The room was small and sparse, with stone walls that seemed to absorb all warmth. There was no sign of Theo, Juno, or Kiran, and that fact alone sent a spike of panic through me.
Where were they? What had happened to them?
A noise behind me—soft footsteps, deliberate—made me stiffen. I turned my head slowly, heart racing, to see Eris standing in the doorway, watching me with those intense, predatory eyes.
My breath was caught in my throat.
“So you’re awake,” Eris said, her voice low and almost… tender, though it sent chills down my spine. She stepped further into the room, her presence dominating the space like she belonged there, like she owned everything in it—including me.
“What do you want from me?” I asked, my voice rasping, though I forced herself to meet Eris’s gaze with defiance.
Eris’s smile was small, but it didn’t reach her eyes. She crossed the room slowly, every movement calculated, and stopped just in front of me. Her fingers brushed my cheek, and I flinched at the contact.
“I want you to understand,” Eris said, her voice soft, but laced with something dangerous. “You don’t belong with them—those fools you call friends. You were always meant for something greater.”
“I belong with my friends,” I spat, pulling away from her touch, but my body still felt weak. I wanted to scream, to fight, but it was like my strength had been stolen along with my freedom.
Eris’s eyes darkened. “Your friends will abandon you. They can’t protect you—not from the truth, not from what’s coming.”
“What truth?” I demanded, my voice shaking despite my attempt to sound strong. “What are you even talking about?”
Eris’s lips twisted into a smile that was far from comforting. “The world you think you know is a lie. The Hegemony, the Wastelands, the Oracle—none of it is what it seems. And you… you’re at the center of it all, Aurora.”
My heart raced at the mention of the Oracle. “What do you mean?”
Eris knelt beside me now, her face inches away, and I could feel the cold radiating from her. “The Veil has kept you blind for so long. But soon, it will all fall apart. The Oracle doesn’t serve the Hegemony—it’s their puppet, their tool of control.”
I shook my head, confusion swirling in her mind. “That can’t be true…”
“Oh, it is.” Eris stood again, her eyes glinting with something almost triumphant. “But you’ll see. I’ll show you. Once you
understand, you’ll realize that you’re mine. You’ve always been mine.”
My skin crawled at the possessive tone in Eris’s voice. My stomach churned, bile rising in her throat. “I’m not yours. I’ll never be.”
Eris laughed, a low, dangerous sound. “We’ll see about that.”
She turned and began walking toward the door, but before she left, she glanced back over her shoulder. “Rest for now. We have much to discuss later.”
The door shut behind her with a heavy thud, and the lock clicked into place. I was left alone in the cold, dark room, her mind reeling from everything Eris had said.
The Oracle doesn’t serve the Hegemony?
The Veil is keeping us blind?
I’ve always been hers?
I'm not even gay!
My chest tightened with a mixture of fear and anger. I had to get out of here. I had to find Theo, Juno, and Kiran. I had to figure out what Eris meant, and what game she was playing. Because if there was one thing I was certain of, it was that I would never let Eris control me.
But for now, I was trapped, and all I could do was wait.

I couldn’t tell how much time had passed since Eris left me alone in this cold, stone room. My wrists still ached from the rough bindings I had struggled against before they were finally undone, but the real pain was in my heart—a slow, burning anger simmering beneath the surface.
I hated the way Eris looked at me, as if I were some prize, some possession to be claimed. But what gnawed at me even more was the uncertainty. Her words about the Oracle and the Veil made everything feel unsteady, like the very ground beneath me was cracking. I had to stay focused.
Sitting in the dim light, I took a deep breath, searching for clarity. There had to be a way out of here. Eris couldn’t keep me trapped forever, and even if she did… Theo, Juno, and Kiran wouldn’t stop until they found me. I had to believe that.
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway outside my prison, and I tensed, heart racing, as the door creaked open.
Eris stepped through, and this time, she didn’t wear the smug expression from before. Instead, her eyes were darker, colder, as if something had shifted within her since our last encounter.
“Comfortable?” she asked, her voice dripping with mockery as she entered the room.
I didn’t respond, my jaw set in defiance.
Eris raised an eyebrow. “Still stubborn, I see.”
“Why are you doing this?” I demanded, finally breaking my silence. “What do you gain from all this?”
She moved closer, circling me slowly, like a predator playing with its prey. “What do I gain?” She let out a soft, bitter laugh. “You’re still thinking so small, Aurora.”
I clenched my fists. “Then explain it to me. Enlighten me.”
Eris stopped in front of me, leaning down so our faces were inches apart. “This isn’t about power, or control, or even revenge. This is about destiny.”
My breath caught in my throat as her words hung in the air.
“Destiny?” I repeated, disbelief coloring my tone. “You drug me, kidnap me, and now you’re talking about destiny?”
Eris’s gaze softened, but her intensity didn’t waver. “You’re important, Aurora. More important than you realize. You have a role to play in all of this, and whether you like it or not, I’m the only one who truly understands that.”
I shook my head, anger surging through me. “Then explain it to me. You have to know something. Why not share?”
Eris’s smile disappeared, replaced by a look that made my stomach turn. “The Oracle is not what it seems. It was never about just guiding the Hegemony. It’s a weapon—a weapon that can reshape the world. But only if the right person wields it.”
I stared at her, a cold knot of fear forming in my chest. A weapon? The Oracle had always been a symbol of power, of balance. But a weapon? It didn’t make sense.
“You’re lying,” I whispered, doubt creeping into my voice despite my best efforts to stay resolute.
“Am I?” Eris smiled again, this time cold and sharp. “Think about it. Everything you’ve been told—it’s all been lies. The Hegemony, the Wastelands, the Council. They’ve kept the truth hidden, but I’ve seen through the Veil. I know what’s coming.”
I shook my head, but my thoughts were swirling, a storm of confusion and fear. Could it be true? Could everything I thought I knew be a lie?
“You need to trust me, Aurora,” Eris said softly, her voice almost pleading now. “I know you feel it too. The connection. The pull.”
My heart pounded in my chest. There was something about Eris—something unsettling, but undeniable. I did feel a connection, but was it real, or was it just another trick? Another manipulation?
“I don’t trust you,” I finally said, my voice barely more than a whisper.
Eris’s eyes flashed with anger, but she quickly regained her composure. “You will. In time, you’ll see.”
Without another word, she turned and left the room, the door slamming shut behind her with a finality that made my chest tighten.
I was alone again. But this time, I wasn’t just angry or scared. I was questioning everything.
I leaned against the cold stone wall, my mind racing. What if Eris was right? What if everything I had been taught was a lie?
The memory of Theo, Juno, and Kiran flashed through my mind. They wouldn’t stop looking for me. I had to hold on to that thought. They were out there, searching for me, just as they always had.
But could I rely on them? Or would they fall victim to Eris’s manipulation as well?
My heart ached at the thought of them walking into a trap, and suddenly, I was gripped by a fierce determination. I would find a way to escape this place. I had to.
I looked around the dimly lit room, searching for anything that could help me. The shadows flickered around me, and I felt a surge of hope. I wouldn’t give up. I couldn’t.
There had to be a way to break free, to warn my friends before it was too late.
As the silence settled around me, I made a silent vow: I would find a way out of here. I would uncover the truth about the Oracle, the Veil, and Eris herself. And no matter what it took, I would get back to Theo, Juno, and Kiran.
I was more than just a pawn in someone else’s game. I was Aurora, and I would not be controlled.
