If I wanted to speak properly, I needed to get away from him, this closeness was messing with my brain. I pulled myself from his grip and took three steps backward. I was glad he let me go. I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked at him. Everything that was happening right now was crazy, like how the hell did I end up with so much drama? I asked myself. I stared at him for a few seconds, wondering what kind of thing he wanted from me, seeing his clearly expensive clothes and room, I knew this man was loaded with cash, so what could he possibly want..or else. “Don’t you think for a second that I will sleep with you.” The words poured out of my mouth.
“Excuse me! Where did that come from?” the man looked taken back by her words.
“I am just telling you in case you even have that thought somewhere in your head” I responded, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Do you want to sleep with me, Rose?” He asked, his eyes looking straight into mine, making my face turn red with embarrassment. I had to look away from him.
“No.” I responded, “Then we will have no problem because I also don’t want or think about sleeping with you.” I heard him say but didn’t look at him, a pang of disappointment weighed on me as I processed his response, even though I shouldn’t be thinking about this, I couldn’t just help but think maybe he didn’t find me as attractive as I found him, but then again I would not blame him as I knew I was looking like someone who escaped an asylum. Summoning up my courage, I turned my eyes and looked at him. “What do you want from me then?”
A moment of silence passed between us. “I need a nanny to take care of my son, someone who would relate to him and monitor him and also teach him new things.”
“You have a son!?” I couldn’t hide the shock on my face, my eyes moved to his hand, and it was then I saw the black ring on his finger. I immediately felt bad for ogling over a married man. Damn, his wife was very lucky.
“You heard me, Rose.” He responded.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help it. Why don’t you employ a standard nanny who is good with kids? I don’t think I am good with kids.” I explained.
“Zane…is a very stubborn kid, he causes a lot of trouble and his previous nannies couldn’t handle him, and you worked at a preschool, so you must be good with kids”
“I needed money.”
“Rose, I think you are mistaking this for a job interview. You will work for me whether you want to or not. I am in a good mood. That’s why I am here. Don’t expect it to happen again,”
“Are you threatening me?” I asked, looking at the man in front of me.
“Take it however you want, I need you in the living room in ten minutes,” He turned around and walked towards the door.
“Wait! You didn’t tell me your name?” I called out to him, “Alexander Conti,” I heard him say before the door slammed shut.
Letting out a sigh, I took my time to freshen up, taking a long hot shower washing the dirt and tiredness from my body. When I stepped out of the shower I was red and hot. A blue dress was sitting on the bed when I returned to the room. It was a beautiful dress. I wondered who owned it. I pulled the dress over my body and, surprisingly, it fit almost perfectly.
I also saw a tray placed on the dresser. My mouth watered at the sight of the food. It was toast, eggs, sausages, fruits and a big cup of coffee, a beautiful looking coffee I must say, it took ten minutes for me to lick the plate clean. It was a nice breakfast, better than what I have had for weeks. Sadness washed over me as I remembered how Jace was strict about what I ate. I was only allowed to eat salad and vegetables as he didn’t want me to be fat. He also nagged about how disgusting fat women were.
Pushing the thought out of my head, I walked out of the room, and headed down the hallway into what looked like a sitting room. It was beautiful with three gray couches on it. I sat down on one of the couches and waited for Alexander. A few minutes later, Alexander walked into the sitting room with a small boy trailing behind him. I was surprised at how alike they looked. The boy was literally the mini version of Alexander.
“Come sit.” Alexander gestured to his son, who sat down beside him. The only difference was the boy’s eyes, his were green while Alexander’s were gray. “Zane, this is Miss Rose Conner, and she will be your new nanny from today henceforth.” he turned to look to my side, “This is my son, Zane. Say Hi to Miss Rose.”
“Why does she look forty?” My mouth almost fell to the ground, watching him keep a straight face, it showed he was serious. Forty? I was just 25 and I definitely didn’t look forty.
“Zane, be nice.” Alexander said, his voice warning his son to be respectful. Zane let out a sigh, jumped down the chair and walked towards me, stretching his hand out for a handshake. “Nice to meet you Miss Rose,”
I looked at his hand and back to his face, “Nice to meet you Zane,” I placed my hand in his, shaking his small soft hand.
Zane pulled away from my grip as soon as I touched him. I wondered why. He walked back to his father and climbed back to the chair, sitting so polite and composed. It was surprising to me to see a child so calm and composed.
“Go to your room Zane, Rose and I have something to talk about,” Alexander said to his son. The boy looked like he was about to say something but held himself. He made his way upstairs. “You will be staying in the room you woke up in.”
“Thank you, but I need to go back to my apartment to take some of my things,” I told him.
“You don’t need to, if it's the clothes you want you can get new ones.” Alexander said.
“I cannot afford to buy a new wardrobe.” I said louder than I intended.
“I will pay for it.”
“I don’t want your money!” I was beginning to get irritated by this conversation. It seemed Alexander did not like it when people opposed him, because he was glaring at me. I cleared my throat and looked away, “There are other valuable things that I need to take.”
An awkward silence passed. “We are leaving in five minutes,” Before I could say anything, he was out of the door.
