chapter 4: The interview

741 Words
The lobby of Lucien Enterprise was silent in a way that felt deliberate. Mia stood near the reception desk, fingers curled tightly around her bag strap. The building was beautiful—too beautiful. Polished marble floors reflected the light, and the air felt cool, heavy, almost watchful. “Mia Hale?” a voice called. She turned. The man approaching her was tall, impeccably dressed, his presence calm yet commanding. His dark hair was neatly styled, his expression unreadable but sharp. “I’m Adrian Ravenscroft,” he said. “Follow me.” As they walked, Mia noticed how employees straightened at Adrian’s presence. Doors opened without a word. Elevators arrived instantly. It was as though the building itself responded to him. The elevator doors closed. “You applied online,” Adrian said casually. “What made you choose Lucien Enterprise?” Mia hesitated, then answered honestly. “It felt… different. Like a place where ambition actually matters.” Adrian’s lips curved faintly. “Interesting choice of words.” They stepped into a quiet conference room. The windows stretched from floor to ceiling, revealing the city far below. Mia sat opposite Adrian, her heart beating steadily despite the strange tension in the air. He reviewed her resume carefully. Too carefully. “You’re new to New York,” he said. “No powerful connections. No safety net.” “I’m not afraid of hard work,” Mia replied. “I’m here to build something real.” For the first time, Adrian’s gaze sharpened. “Most people want comfort. Few want purpose.” A pause followed. Then—Mia felt it. A presence. Not seen. Not heard. But undeniable. The air shifted, subtle yet heavy, as if someone else had entered the room without opening the door. Mia swallowed, forcing herself to stay composed. “Would you be willing to start immediately if offered the position?” Adrian asked. “Yes,” she said, without hesitation. Adrian closed the folder slowly. “Very well.” He stood. “You’ll hear from us soon.” As Mia rose, her eyes drifted briefly to the darkened glass wall. For a split second, she thought she saw a reflection that wasn’t hers—tall, still, watching. Her breath caught. But when she looked again, there was nothing. Adrian escorted her out. “Welcome to Lucien Enterprise, Miss Hale.” Mia stepped back into the sunlight, unaware that the interview had never truly been Adrian’s decision. From the shadows high above, Lucien had already made his choice. The moment Mia stepped out of the building, the air inside the top floor office shifted. Adrian entered quietly, closing the door behind him. The room was dim, lit only by the city’s glow filtering through the glass walls. Lucien stood near the window, hands clasped behind his back, unmoving—like a figure carved from shadow and time. “She’s gone,” Adrian said. Lucien did not turn. “I know.” Adrian crossed the room, loosening his tie. “She answered honestly. No rehearsed ambition. No fear either. That’s rare.” Lucien’s reflection stared back at him from the glass—eyes dark, ancient, unreadable. “She felt it,” Lucien said softly. “The presence.” Adrian paused. “Yes. Her pulse changed. But she didn’t run.” A faint smile touched Lucien’s lips. Dangerous. Measured. “Most humans shrink when the veil thins,” Lucien continued. “She leaned forward.” Adrian studied him carefully. “You haven’t involved yourself like this in decades.” Lucien turned at last. The room seemed to bend subtly with the motion. “She is not here by chance,” he said. “Her name echoed before I ever saw her face.” Adrian folded his arms. “You think she’s connected to the old blood?” Lucien’s gaze darkened. “I don’t think. I feel.” Silence settled between them—thick with centuries of shared secrets. “What do you want done?” Adrian asked. “Offer her the position,” Lucien said. “Keep her close. Watch carefully.” “And if she awakens something?” Adrian pressed. Lucien stepped back into the shadows, his voice low and certain. “Then the world will adjust… as it always has.” Outside, far below, Mia walked into the city unaware that her life had just crossed a line drawn long before her birth. And Lucien— Lucien had already decided.
