44 A Bridge Too Far A hundred paces passed quickly, despite the slow pace Julian made and his frequent stops to look back and make sure Jared had not vanished. Fortunately, he didn't. Unfortunately, Julian could find not even a hint of any sort of mechanism or a way across. The cliff face just stretched on and on into seeming infinity, without offering a clue what to do now. He stopped, scowling in annoyance and frustration. He had picked a hundred paces because it seemed a nice round number. But really, the crossing, if there even was one, could be miles ahead.
