As Gyda entered the room, her steps slowed as she took in the unexpected sight before her. Her eyes widened with concern and surprise, and her heart quickened in response to the scene that greeted her. Alafia, who was a picture of strength and energy the last time they parted, was now a fragile silhouette on the bed, her tear-streaked face buried in the folds of the sheets. She was also silver. Her hair, her eyes, and Alafia’s appearance made Gyda even more confused about what could have happened.
When she had called her in the early hours of the morning, Alafia had sounded happy; she was with Alexi.
