- Calum Beckett –
Adam rushed to our side at the bar and gulped down my drink.
“Wait, should we wait for James and Gunner, first.” Alex stopped him before he could say anything.
“I already mind-linked them. They should be here any minute”. Adam said as he pushed us to a more private seat inside the inn. There were two couches beside a window overlooking the streets of the small town. I looked outside and the pavement is covered with fallen leaves. It’s autumn now. Just a few weeks before winter and one of the celebrated full moons of our kind. The Long Night Moon. It wasn’t long before James and Gunner arrived at the inn.
“Adam, you found something?” James asked as he and Gunner joined us.
“Okay, are you ready for this? I was walking through the town and I found this beautiful girl, she has golden locks and ice blue eyes and she was buying roses from this store. She was really my type. So, I walked up to her and asked what her name was. And she said her name was Bellinda. We ended up chatting a bit. Her story, it’s really tragic, her mother died from an illness and her father was in the hospital…”
“wait, wait – where is this story going?” Alex asked annoyed.
“I’m going there! Relax, geez” Adam retorted. Gunner asked for the waiter and ordered us some food. We thought the same thing, this is gonna last ‘til dinner.
“Where was I again?” Adam thought out loud. “AHH! So I followed her and get this. She said her father was in the hospital because he was attacked by a wild animal. Just a few days ago!” we all looked at each other.
“Does this mean, we’re not the only werewolves in this town?” Alex asked. James and Gunner fell silent.
I can sense something’s been bugging them since they arrived at the inn.
“Actually, we stumbled upon our cousin. Adrian, on our way here” James was the one who broke their silence first. “he is a member of the northern pack’s elite team.” I almost choked at the steak in my throat.
Before I could even speak, I sensed several presence around us, simultaneously appearing. I saw the inn keeper exit through the back in my peripheral view. s**t. The front door flew open as four or five men entered the inn. One of the men shifted and launched an attack towards us. Adam immediately shifted and went in front of us to counter the attack. Alex followed suit, he bit one of the men by his shoulder and threw him out of the inn.
Two werewolves broke the windows and tried to corner us. James and I shifted and ran outside to get a better view at our enemies. Gunner stayed inside the inn to help Alex.
Right after we stepped on the pavement, we immediately regretted our decision as we were surrounded by almost a dozen werewolves. I see three of them on one side of the street and four on the other. I can also sense at least five of them on the rooftops.
We stood back to back as we growled at our aggressors taunting them to dare attack us first. If what James said earlier is true. Then these are not ordinary werewolves, they are an elite team sent here to assassinate us.
A dark brown wolf was the first to attack us coming from the roof top. It pounced me and we rolled until we crashed on one of the buildings. I saw James attack the nearest wolf beside him. Alex went out as well and attacked the other wolves coming at me. I pushed hard at the werewolf that pinned me down.
I was surprised that he wasn’t sent flying even after the force I used against him. He seems to be the strongest of our attackers. He must be their leader. I growled at him before I met his attack with my own. No wolf backing down. He attacked again directed at my shoulder but I avoided him in time. He stumbled a little and I took this chance to bite his knee hard, almost breaking it. He howled in pain as he limped away from me.
I pounced at his back and as I was going to bite his neck, another wolf attacked from my side which sent me crashing into one of the street carts. I groaned. More werewolves appeared at the scene. We were greatly outnumbered. f**k. I looked at my team and saw them struggling, trying to fight three or more werewolves at a time.
I heard Alex howled in pain as one of the attackers was able to bite him in his stomach. I quickly regained my posture and pounced at his attacker, breaking its neck. Before I could move again, three werewolves bit me, holding me down. I tried to shake them away but they kept me at my position. The brown wolf appeared in front of me and just as it was about to attack me, a blinding light took over the streets. A voice inside my head screamed “Run!” I instinctively got up and took Alex in my arms. I mind-linked Adam, James and Gunner, to run as well and to regroup later.
We haven’t gotten very far when I heard a voice from one of the alleys.
“Come here, quickly!” I don’t know why but it sounded like the voice in my head earlier. I heard loud growls from our back. Left with no choice, I trailed the voice into the alley. A hooded figure appeared just a few feet from us and she signaled for us to follow her. We walked silently through the small alleyways of the town. Alex groaned beside me and the hooded figure stopped walking. She motioned for me to drop Alex beside a pile of boxes in the alley.
She leaned beside Alex and she began chanting elder language. She’s a witch. I was about to grapple her when her hands glowed green and Alex’ wounds began to heal. The pain on his face a little while ago also vanished.
“Tell me, who are you. And why are you helping us?” I asked the stranger. She slowly faced me and took down her hood. An old woman in her fifties, maybe. With dark brown hair and wrinkled eyes. She smiled at me.
“I haven’t seen you in a while, my darling Cale”
I was stunned. There was only one person who called me that name. “Dolores…” could it really be her? She sighed in relief.
“I thought you already forgot. I’m relieved that you still remember me after all these years” she smiled again.
“H-how? I thought you were dead…I never saw you since… that day” I asked in disbelief.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t come to you sooner. I was entrusted one last task which tied me to this town. If I could leave, I would’ve gone to you sooner. You must’ve gone through a lot on your own. But I’m happy to see you well” she placed her hand on my left cheek.
“You’ve grown up to be quite a young man. You’re a spitting image of your father.” She said with sadness in her eyes.
“What are you doing here? In this small town?” She asked me and I immediately remembered what she did earlier. I turned away from her.
“I was told a witch lived in this area. I couldn’t have imagined that it would be you.”
