Chapter 7: The Lion and the Sword

The heavy oak doors of Derek’s corner office clicked shut behind Amelia with a soft, definitive sound. Derek was standing behind his broad mahogany desk, a leather-bound folder open in his hands, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. Hearing the door, he looked up, his sharp features softening the moment his eyes landed on her. But as he caught the tense, rigid posture of her shoulders and the dark, unyielding fire in her hazel eyes, his expression shifted back into immediate, protective alertness. He set the folder down with a sharp thud and stepped around the desk. "Amelia? What is it? What happened?" Without speaking, Amelia walked over to his desk, turned the secondary laptop screen toward him, and pressed play on the encrypted file viewer. Derek leaned over the desk, resting his palms on the polished wood. As his steel-blue eyes scanned the series of high-resolution photographs—the Maybach outside her apartment, his hand on her waist at the helipad, and the intimate embrace through the glass windows of the lake estate—a terrifying, sub-zero coldness settled over his face. When his eyes reached the ultimatum at the bottom of the email, demanding a meeting at the Midtown Grand Bistro under the threat of public ruin, the air in the room felt as though it dropped ten degrees. The muscle along his jawline flexed so hard the skin turned white. The sheer, primal fury radiating off him was palpable, a dark storm contained only by the threadbare remnants of his legendary self-control. "Victoria," Derek growled, his baritone voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it sent a tremor through the room. "She had my private grounds surveilled. She crossed the line." He straightened up, reaching into his tailored jacket for his phone, his thumb flying across the screen to speed-dial his chief of security and senior legal counsel. "I am going to destroy her. I will file an injunction before noon, freeze her firm’s capital assets, and—" "No, Derek. Stop." The quiet authority in Amelia’s voice brought his hand to a complete halt. Derek looked at her, genuinely surprised. "Amelia, she is blackmailing you. She is threatening to ruin your life and drag your name through the gutter to get to me. I will not allow her to put her filthy hands on you." "She isn't blackmailing me, Derek. She’s trying to intimidate me," Amelia corrected, stepping closer until she was standing directly in front of him. She reached out, placing her hand over his white-knuckled fist, forcing him to lower the phone. "Look at what she wrote. She wants me to meet her alone at one o'clock. Why?" Derek’s eyes narrowed as his sharp, analytical mind began to process her question. "Because she thinks you are the weak link. She assumes you are terrified of losing your job, your reputation, or being branded as a corporate climber. She expects you to break, panic, and walk away from me to save yourself." "Exactly," Amelia said, a cool, dangerous smile touching her lips. "She thinks I am just an insecure girl playing house with her boss. She thinks I can be scared off with a few photos and a headline. She expects a frightened assistant to show up at that bistro today, ready to beg for mercy." She smoothed the lapel of her sleek tailored jacket, her hazel eyes flashing with an unshakeable, fierce intelligence that took Derek’s breath away. "She doesn't know who she’s dealing with. And I am going to show her." Derek stared at her for a long, suspended moment. The protective, possessive rage that had consumed him seconds ago began to turn into a profound, overwhelming awe. He had spent months believing he needed to wrap Amelia in armor and shield her from the monsters of his world. He had forgotten that beneath her gentle, sweet exterior lay the mind of a brilliant, fiercely loyal woman who was more than capable of standing beside him in the trenches. "You want to go to the meeting," Derek said quietly, testing the words. "I am going to the meeting," Amelia replied firmly. "And you are going to let me handle it. Victoria wants a war, Derek. But she made the fatal mistake of underestimating the woman you love." A slow, dark, extraordinarily proud smile spread across Derek’s face. He reached out, cupping the back of her neck with his long fingers and pulling her toward him until their foreheads touched. "You are incredible," he murmured, his voice rich with deep, reverent affection. "Absolutely extraordinary. But I am not letting you walk into that bistro alone, Amelia. I will have security posted at every entrance, and I will be listening to every word spoken at that table." "Agreed," Amelia whispered, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to his lips. "Now, give me access to the hidden audit files on Sterling Capital’s offshore shell companies. If she wants to play dirty, I’m going to give her a masterclass in corporate warfare." At precisely twelve-fifty-five, the rain began to fall over Midtown Manhattan, coating the glass windows of the Grand Bistro in long, silver streaks. The restaurant was the epitome of Manhattan luxury—high ceilings, white tablecloths, plush velvet booths, and an elite clientele of bankers, politicians, and socialites. Sitting in a secluded corner booth overlooking the street, Victoria Sterling casually turned her gold ring around her finger, taking a slow sip of vintage champagne. She looked up as the maître d' guided a guest toward the table. Amelia walked through the restaurant with effortless grace. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk blouse beneath a dark, tailored trench coat, her dark brown hair falling in soft, polished waves over her shoulders. She held her head high, her posture radiating an air of quiet, aristocratic authority that immediately drew subtle glances from surrounding tables. Victoria’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second, caught off guard by the total absence of fear in Amelia’s demeanor. But she quickly recovered, leaning back against the velvet cushion with a patronizing smirk. "Miss Johnson," Victoria drawled softly, gesturing to the seat across from her. "You're prompt. I do appreciate punctuality in administrative staff." Amelia didn't sit down immediately. She unbuttoned her trench coat, draped it neatly over the back of the leather chair, and sat down with calm, deliberate precision. She folded her hands on the crisp white tablecloth, looking directly into Victoria’s calculating eyes. "Let's skip the theatrical pleasantries, Ms. Sterling," Amelia said, her voice smooth, clear, and perfectly modulated. "You sent an extortion attempt to my inbox. I’m here. What do you want?" Victoria laughed softly, a sharp, cold sound. She reached into her leather handbag, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and slid it across the table. "I want you out of Blackwood Enterprises by five o'clock today," Victoria said, leaning forward, her voice dropping into a low, venomous hiss. "Inside that envelope are memory drives containing every photograph my operatives took of you and Derek over the last three weeks. If you resign quietly and sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding your time at the firm, those photos will be destroyed." "And if I refuse?" Amelia asked, her expression unreadable, her voice completely devoid of panic. "If you refuse, those photos will be delivered to every major financial outlet in New York by three o'clock," Victoria threatened, a triumphant gleam in her dark eyes. "The headlines will tear you apart. They will call you a opportunist who traded favors for career advancement. The board will lose confidence in Derek’s leadership right in the middle of the European acquisition, and his stock prices will plummet. You will destroy him, Amelia. Is that what your little secret fantasy is worth?" Amelia looked down at the manila envelope resting between them on the table. She didn't touch it. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, a soft, almost pitying smile gracing her lips. "You really don't understand Derek at all, do you, Victoria?" Amelia said softly. Victoria’s smirk stiffened. "What did you say?" "Eight years ago, you betrayed him because you thought he was weak," Amelia continued, her hazel eyes locking onto Victoria’s with a searing, hypnotic intensity. "You assumed that because he guards his heart, he can be easily manipulated. You think these photos are a weapon against him. But all they prove is that Derek Blackwood is a man capable of profound, fierce love—a love he never gave to you." Victoria’s face flushed with a dark, ugly crimson. "You foolish little girl. You think a few sweet words make you special? He will throw you away the moment his company is threatened!" "He won't have to," Amelia said calmly. She reached into her structured leather tote bag, pulled out a thin black tablet, and placed it smoothly on the table in front of Victoria. "Because while you were spending the last two weeks hiring cheap private investigators to follow us around, I spent the last forty-eight hours conducting a forensic audit of Sterling Capital’s secondary acquisition accounts." Victoria froze, her breath hitching in her throat. Amelia tapped the screen, opening a series of color-coded financial spreadsheets and bank transfer registries. "Three months ago, your firm illegally funneled twelve million dollars through a shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands to artificially inflate your voting rights in the Sunken Coast logistics merger," Amelia explained, her tone as clinical and lethal as a surgeon’s scalpel. "It’s a clear violation of federal trading regulations, wire fraud, and market manipulation." Victoria’s hand trembled slightly as she looked down at the glowing screen. "This... this is nonsense. You don't have access to these files." "I am Derek Blackwood’s chief executive coordinator," Amelia reminded her, her voice ringing with absolute, triumphing power. "I have access to everything. And as of ten minutes ago, an unredacted copy of these audit reports was delivered directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as the federal prosecutor's office." Victoria went dead pale, the color draining completely from her face as she stared at Amelia in sheer, horrifying shock. Amelia leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, her face inches from Victoria’s trembling form. "You wanted a scandal, Ms. Sterling?" Amelia whispered, her baritone-soft voice carrying an iron authority that shattered Victoria’s composure into dust. "You just got one. Take your photos, take your empty threats, and get out of our lives. Because if you ever look at Derek, touch his company, or step foot on our floor again... I won't just ruin your career. I will ensure you spend the next ten years in a federal prison." Victoria sat frozen, completely paralyzed by the terrifying strength and cold brilliance of the woman sitting across from her. Realizing she had lost everything—her leverage, her reputation, and her gambit—she grabbed her handbag with a trembling hand, stood up so fast she nearly knocked her chair over, and fled the restaurant without saying another word. Amelia sat alone in the quiet booth for a long moment, letting out a slow, steadying breath as the adrenaline coursing through her veins began to settle into a deep, empowering calm. Across the street, parked in the heavy rain, the door of a matte-black Maybach opened. Derek stepped out into the downpour, ignoring his driver’s offer of an umbrella. He strode through the grand doors of the bistro, his tall, commanding figure cutting through the crowd like a king entering his court. His steel-blue eyes were fixed entirely on Amelia. He reached her booth in seconds. Without saying a word, he reached down, took her hand, and pulled her gently up into his arms. He wrapped his long arms around her waist, burying his face in her hair, holding her with a desperate, wild, and worshipping intensity. "I heard everything," Derek rasped against her ear, his voice thick with unbridled emotion, his chest pounding wildly against hers. "My God, Amelia... you were incredible." Amelia wrapped her arms securely around his neck, burying her face into the warm crook of his shoulder, letting out a soft, happy laugh. "I told you, Derek. Nobody threatens my man." Derek pulled back slightly, framing her face with his warm, large hands, his eyes shining with pure, blinding love. He leaned down and captured her mouth in a passionate, deep kiss right there in the middle of the crowded restaurant, completely uncaring of who saw, who watched, or what the world thought. The secret was no longer a secret. The fantasy was no longer just a dream. Together, they were unbreakable.
