Chapter 8: Unmasked and Unafraid

1012 Words
The rain outside the floor-to-ceiling glass of Blackwood Tower had cleared by late afternoon, leaving behind a crisp twilight sky brushed in deep hues of indigo and violet. Down on the seventy-fifth floor, the quiet atmosphere of the executive suite felt fundamentally transformed. The heavy oak doors of Derek’s corner office were open wide. Amelia sat at her desk, her attention fixed on her monitors as she coordinated with the legal and public relations teams. News of the Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into Sterling Capital had broken less than an hour ago, sending shockwaves through Wall Street. Victoria Sterling’s firm was in full retreat, its aggressive posture shattered by the forensic evidence Amelia had turned over. Footsteps echoed softly across the marble floor. Derek walked out of his office, wearing his tailored navy suit jacket, his tie drawn tight. He didn't hesitate or pause to look around the open floor. He walked straight to Amelia’s desk, stopping directly in front of her. In full view of the senior executives and administrative staff walking down the glass-walled corridor, Derek reached out, resting his large hand over hers on the desk. His fingers were entwined securely with hers, a deliberate and completely public statement. Amelia looked up, a soft flush warming her cheeks, though her hazel eyes remained bright and steady. "Derek... everyone can see." "Let them look," Derek said, his baritone voice calm, resonant, and entirely devoid of hesitation. He squeezed her hand softly, looking down at her with a fierce, quiet pride. "The time for hiding is over, Amelia. I spent years keeping the world at a distance because I was afraid of being vulnerable. But standing behind you today taught me something." "What did it teach you?" she whispered. "That loving you isn't a vulnerability. It's the strongest thing I've ever done." Derek gently tugged her hand, prompting her to stand up. He didn't let go of her fingers as she walked around the desk to stand beside him. Together, hand in hand, they walked toward the private elevator. Across the executive floor, subtle glances were exchanged, but no one dared speak a word of objection. The absolute authority and tender devotion radiating from Derek made one thing abundantly clear: Amelia Johnson was not just his assistant; she was the heart of his empire. The private elevator carried them smoothly to the penthouse suite in Tribeca. When the doors slid open, the warm glow of the city lights filled the vast space, reflecting off the polished dark wood floors. Derek guided her out onto the grand open terrace. The cool evening air was crisp against her skin, blowing her dark brown hair softly across her shoulders. The vast panorama of New York City stretched out beneath them—a dazzling sea of amber, white, and golden lights. Derek stepped behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. He rested his chin against the crown of her head, drawing in a long, quiet breath. "When I bought this place," Derek murmured, his voice rich and deep in the quiet evening, "I thought of it as a fortress. A place high enough above the city where no one could reach me, hurt me, or demand anything from me. It was cold, silent, and empty." Amelia laid her hands over his arms, resting back into his strength. "And now?" Derek turned her gently in his arms until she was facing him. The soft moonlight illuminated the strong, handsome angles of his face, softening the sharp jawline and lighting up his steel-blue eyes with a dark, breathtaking warmth. "Now it’s home," Derek said softly. He reached into his coat pocket and brought out a small, velvet-lined box. Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart gave a sudden, wild thud against her ribs as she looked from the box up into his eyes. Derek opened the box, revealing an exquisite, antique-cut diamond ring that caught the starlight, glittering brilliantly against the dark velvet. "Derek..." she breathed, tears pricking at the corners of her hazel eyes. "Eight years ago, I swore I would never give my heart to another human being," Derek said, his voice trembling slightly with raw, unreserved emotion. "I believed that love was a weakness used to destroy men like me. But you showed me that real love doesn't tear down—it protects, it heals, and it lifts you up." He took the ring from the box, holding her soft, trembling hand in his large, warm palm. "You walked into my life with your quiet intelligence, your gentle spirit, and a beauty that completely undid me from the first second I saw you. You fought for me when I didn't even know I needed saving. You are my partner, my equal, my absolute devotion... and the only woman I will ever love." Derek looked deeply into her eyes, his steel-blue gaze burning with pure, unyielding sincerity. "Amelia Johnson, will you marry me? Will you make this secret fantasy our reality for the rest of our lives?" Tears of pure happiness spilt over Amelia’s eyelashes, trailing down her warm cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, pressing herself flush against his broad chest. "Yes," she sobbed softly, a breathtaking smile lighting up her face as she looked at him. "Yes, Derek! A thousand times, yes!" Derek let out a deep, triumphant laugh—a sound so full of pure joy it echoed across the open terrace. He slid the diamond ring smoothly onto her finger, its fit absolute and perfect. Then, he cupped her face in his hands and lifted her slightly, capturing her lips in a passionate, deep, and consuming kiss that sealed their future under the stars. The shadow man from her private paperbacks, the possessive protector of her deepest daydreams, was no longer a secret fantasy written on parchment. He was real. He was hers, and together, they stood atop the world, unmasked, unafraid, and bound by a love that would last forever.
