Chapter 2: Echoes in the Dark

2072 Words
The rainy night gave way to a crisp, clear autumn morning, but the clarity outside did nothing to ease the quiet turmoil inside Amelia’s mind. By seven-thirty, she was already sitting at her desk outside Derek’s office, dressed in a sleek, cream-colored silk blouse and a dark tailored pencil skirt. She had spent the entire night tossing and turning in her bed, her mind replaying the brief, electric moment their fingers had touched, the deep baritone of his voice as he whispered her name, and the searing heat in his eyes. She tried to focus on her monitor, organizing his morning calendar, but every footstep echoing down the corridor made her shoulders tense with a nervous, thrill-seeking anticipation. She was terrified of how strongly he affected her. She was a professional woman, independent and smart; she shouldn't be swooning like a character in one of her romance novels over a simple touch. Yet, Derek possessed an effortless authority that pulled at her deepest, most hidden desires. At precisely eight o'clock, the private elevator doors chimed and slid open. Derek stepped out, looking impeccably handsome in a dark charcoal three-piece suit that contoured perfectly to his broad shoulders and narrow waist. His dark hair was neatly styled, though a few subtle strands fell near his forehead, giving him a dangerously charming edge. His expression was, as usual, a mask of cold, distant professional focus. "Good morning, Mr. Blackwood," Amelia said, standing up and smoothing her skirt, keeping her hands steady through sheer force of will. Derek stopped at her desk. His eyes swept over her face, noting the slight dark circles beneath her eyes that even her carefully applied makeup couldn't completely hide. A subtle frown tugged at the corner of his lips. "Good morning, Miss Johnson," he replied, his voice calm and controlled, though his eyes lingered on her lips for a fraction of a second too long. "Did the car service drop you off safely last night?" "Yes, it did. Thank you very much, sir. It wasn't necessary, but I appreciated it." "It was necessary," he corrected smoothly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I don't like the idea of you wandering the streets late at night alone." The protective edge in his voice made a subtle warmth blossom in her chest. She nodded, offering him a gentle, professional smile. "I'll keep that in mind. Here is your updated schedule for the day. Your nine o'clock with the board has been moved to Conference Room B, and Mr. Sterling from the acquisition team called to confirm your lunch appointment." Derek didn't immediately reach for the tablet she offered. Instead, he folded his arms across his chest, standing close enough that she could smell his sophisticated cologne. "Cancel the lunch with Sterling. Have his team send over the final valuation reports instead. I want my afternoon cleared after two." Amelia made a swift note on her computer. "Of course, sir. Is there anything specific you would like scheduled for the afternoon?" "I have a private matter to attend to," Derek said quietly. He leaned forward slightly, resting one hand on the edge of her desk, bringing his face closer to hers. "And I will need you to accompany me." Amelia looked up, her hazel eyes widening slightly in surprise. "Accompany you, sir?" "Yes," he said, his blue eyes holding hers in a vice-like grip. "A property acquisition in Upstate New York. I need my primary assistant with me to review the contracts on-site. We will take my helicopter from the Midtown pad at two-fifteen. Make the arrangements." "I... of course, Mr. Blackwood. I'll make sure the files are prepared." "Good." Derek stood up to his full height, his gaze softening for a fleeting moment as he looked down at her. "And dress warmly, Amelia. It gets cold by the lake." Before she could process the quiet intimacy of his words, he turned and strode into his office, closing the heavy oak doors behind him. Amelia collapsed back into her chair, letting out a long, shaky breath. A private trip? Just the two of them? The thought made her stomach flutter with a delicate mixture of anxiety and intense, overwhelming excitement. By two o'clock, the autumn air was crisp and biting as Derek and Amelia stood on the helipad atop the Blackwood Tower. The sleek, matte-black helicopter hummed loudly, its twin rotors spinning into a blur against the bright blue sky. Derek guided her toward the aircraft, his firm hand resting gently on the small of her back. Even through the thick fabric of her wool trench coat, the heat of his palm seared through to her skin. The possessive, protective gesture felt so natural, yet it sent waves of delicious tension racing through her veins. He helped her buckle into the plush leather seat inside the cabin, his hands brushing against her waist as he secured the harness, his breath warm against her cheek. "All set?" he asked, his face inches from hers inside the quiet, soundproofed cabin. "Yes, thank you," Amelia replied, her voice trembling slightly. Derek settled into the seat beside her, putting on his headset and adjusting his seatbelt. As the helicopter lifted smoothly off the pad, soaring above the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan, Amelia stared out the window, mesmerized by the sprawling city shrinking below them. "Have you ever taken a helicopter before?" Derek asked over the headset intercom, his deep voice sounding impossibly clear and intimate in her ears. Amelia turned to face him, shaking her head with a small, embarrassed smile. "No. This is my first time." Derek looked at her, his dark blue eyes unreadable. "Does it scare you?" "A little," she admitted honestly, looking at the dizzying height below. "But it's breathtaking." Without saying a word, Derek reached across the small space separating their seats and placed his hand over hers, resting on her lap. His large, warm fingers wrapped securely around her smaller hand, intertwining their fingers together. Amelia’s heart leaped into her throat. She looked down at their joined hands, then up at his face. Derek wasn't looking at her; he was staring straight ahead out the windshield, his profile sharp, aristocratic, and stern. Yet his grip on her hand was firm, steady, and intensely reassuring. "You don't need to be scared," he murmured into the intercom, his tone low and fierce. "You're safe with me, Amelia. Always." Amelia squeezed his hand back, her throat tight with a rush of overwhelming emotion. She didn't know what was happening between them, nor did she understand why this powerful, distant billionaire was showing her such tender, possessive care. All she knew was that every touch, every look, and every word from him was pulling her deeper into an addictive, passionate fantasy from which she had no desire to escape. Forty-five minutes later, the helicopter descended over a vast, dense forest painted in brilliant hues of autumn red, orange, and gold. Nestled on the edge of a crystal-clear, mirror-like lake stood a magnificent estate—a modern architectural masterpiece of black steel, glass, and dark wood, surrounded by total wilderness. "It's incredible," Amelia whispered as the aircraft touched down softly on a private landing pad near the water. "It's one of my private residences," Derek explained, unbuckling his harness and turning to unlatch hers. "I rarely come here. But I needed a quiet place to review the international merger documents without the constant interruptions of the city offices." They stepped out into the crisp, chilly mountain air. The wind blew a gust of cold air across the lake, making Amelia shiver slightly and pull her coat tighter around herself. Instantly, Derek was beside her. He unbuttoned his heavy tailored overcoat and draped it over her shoulders, wrapping the warm, heavy fabric around her. The coat smelled entirely of him—cedar, spice, and clean rain. "Mr. Blackwood, you'll freeze," Amelia protested, looking up at him with wide eyes. "I don't freeze," Derek replied, his voice dark and smooth. He reached out, his thumb gently catching a strand of hair that had blown across her cheek, tucking it tenderly behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her soft skin, his thumb softly tracing the line of her jawline. "Come inside before you catch a cold." Amelia felt her breath hitch in her throat. The casual intimacy of his touch was dizzying. She walked alongside him down the stone path toward the magnificent house, her mind reeling from the raw, simmering tension that grew thicker between them with every passing minute. They entered the high-ceilinged living room, where massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the serene, pristine lake. A large stone fireplace dominated one wall, and sleek, modern furniture was arranged to overlook the water. "Make yourself comfortable," Derek said, heading toward a small wet bar in the corner. "I'll have the caretaker light the fire. Would you like a drink? Wine? Tea?" "Tea would be lovely, thank you," Amelia said, stepping closer to the massive glass window. She pulled his heavy coat closer around her shoulders, breathing in his intoxicating scent. Derek watched her from across the room, his hands stilling over the glass decanter. Watching her stand in his home, wrapped in his clothing, looking out over his sanctuary, hit him with the force of a physical blow. A deep, primal urge to protect her, to claim her, and to keep her hidden away from the rest of the cold world flared violently inside his chest. He had spent eight years building thick walls around his heart, promising himself that he would never allow another person to have power over his emotions. He had convinced himself that he was incapable of warmth, incapable of love. But Amelia was systematically dismantling every defense he possessed without even trying. He prepared two cups of tea and walked over to where she stood. He handed her a steaming porcelain cup, his fingers brushing hers once again. "Thank you," Amelia said, looking up into his dark eyes. "You look as though you belong here," Derek said softly, the words slipping out before he could stop himself. Amelia flushed, a soft pink wash spreading across her cheeks. "It's very peaceful here, Mr. Blackwood. Quite different from the city." "Call me Derek," he said suddenly, his voice thick with an undeniable intensity. "When we are here, away from the office... call me Derek." Amelia felt her pulse hammer against her skin. "Derek," she whispered, testing the weight of his name on her tongue. Derek’s eyes flared with a sudden, dark passion. He set his cup down on a nearby side table, stepping closer to her until there was barely an inch of space remaining between them. Amelia set her own cup down, her heart racing furiously as she looked up into his handsome, stormy face. "Do you have any idea what you do to me, Amelia?" Derek asked, his voice a low, rough rumble. He raised his hand, his long, warm fingers gently cupping her jaw, his thumb pressing lightly against her lower lip. "Do you have any idea how hard I'span track='explicit' class='highlight'>ve tried to keep my hands off you?" Amelia’s breath caught, her lips parting under his thumb. The confession hung in the air, electric and wild. "Derek..." she breathed, her hazel eyes searching his with pure, unadulterated longing. "I... I think about you too. More than I should." Derek let out a soft, ragged groan. The last remnants of his formidable discipline shattered into dust. He slid his hand behind her neck, gathering her dark hair in his fist, and pulled her gently, deliberately, forward. "You are playing with fire, little one," he warned softly against her lips, his warm breath fanning across her face. "If I start, I won't be able to stop." "Don't stop," Amelia whispered, abandoning all caution, giving in entirely to the passionate fantasy that had consumed her heart for so long. Derek’s blue eyes darkened into pure, consuming night. He leaned down and captured her mouth in a deep, breathtaking kiss.
