Chapter 3: Fire and Glass

1787 Words
The kiss was a slow, agonizing fire that consumed every shred of restraint remaining between them. Derek’s mouth claimed hers with a fierce, possessive authority that sent a shudder of pure delight straight down Amelia’s spine. He wasn't gentle, nor was he hesitant; he kissed her like a starving man offered a feast after years of empty night, taking ownership of her lips with a raw, undeniable hunger. Amelia gasped into his mouth, her hands acting on sheer instinct as she brought them up to grasp the front of his soft cotton shirt. The warmth of his broad chest pulsed through the fabric against her fingertips, solid, strong, and real. She leaned into him, surrendering completely to the dizzying sensation of his arms wrapping firmly around her waist, lifting her slightly so that her hips pressed against his. "Derek..." she whispered against his lips when he finally shifted to trail hot, lingering kisses along the curve of her jawline. "You're driving me out of my mind, Amelia," Derek growled softly, his voice thick with a low, primal rasp. His hands slid higher up her back, pressing her tighter against his broad frame. His breath was ragged against the sensitive skin of her neck, sending a fresh wave of goosebumps across her arms. "I've tried for six months to ignore this. To keep my distance. To treat you like any other employee. But God help me, I can't do it anymore." "Don't ignore it," she breathed, tilting her head back to give him better access to her throat. Her hands slid up to his shoulders, her fingers tangling into the short, thick dark hair at the nape of his neck. "Please... don't push me away." Derek groaned, a sound that resonated deep within his chest, and brought his lips back to hers. This time, the kiss softened slightly, deepening into something excruciatingly tender. His tongue swept over hers in a slow, rhythmic dance that tasted of faint dark tea and pure, intoxicating desire. For Amelia, the world outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows ceased to exist. The quiet lake, the autumn forest, the corporate empire waiting back in Manhattan—all of it dissolved into the singular reality of Derek’s touch. The shadow man from her late-night paperbacks, the possessive hero of her secret fantasies, was no longer a phantom of her imagination. He was holding her, protecting her, and looking at her as if she were the only woman in the universe. When he slowly broke the kiss, neither of them moved. Derek rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed as he drew in deep, steadying breaths to regain control of his racing heart. His strong thumb stroked gently over the delicate skin of her cheekbone. "Look at me, Amelia," he murmured softly. She fluttered her eyelashes open, her hazel eyes heavy with lingering passion and innocent wonder. Derek opened his eyes, and the sheer intensity in his steel-blue gaze took her breath away. There was no coldness left in him, no corporate steel—only a raw, vulnerable heat that exposed the hidden depths of his soul. "This changes everything," Derek said quietly, his thumb trailing down to rest against the center of her lower lip. "There is no going back from this. If we do this, it cannot be a passing whim. I don't share what is mine, and I won't play games with you." The possessive declaration made Amelia's heart hammer wildly against her ribs. Any other woman might have been frightened by the raw dominance in his tone, but to Amelia, it felt like a dream realized. She didn't want a casual fling. She wanted the absolute, unyielding devotion he was offering. "I don't want to go back," she answered, her voice firm despite the tremble in her chest. "I don't want games, Derek." A dark, beautiful smile touched the edge of Derek’s lips—the first genuine, unreserved smile she had ever seen on his face. It transformed his harsh, aristocratic features into something breathtakingly human. He leaned down and pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the center of her forehead, then down to the tip of her nose, before stepping back just enough to let her breathe. "Come," he said, taking her hand and lacing his long fingers securely through hers. "The fire is lit in the study. We have work to review, but first, you're going to sit down and eat something." "Is that another order, Mr. Blackwood?" she teased softly, a faint blush returning to her cheeks as the initial shock of their passion began to settle into a warm, comfortable glow. Derek paused, looking back over his shoulder with a dangerous, glinting spark in his blue eyes. "When we are behind closed doors, Amelia, every request I make is an order. And I expect my assistant to be entirely obedient." A shiver of anticipation rippled through her as she allowed him to lead her through the grand stone hallway toward the warm light of the study. The study was wrapped in dark mahogany panels and lined with thousands of leather-bound books. A fire crackled merrily in the grand brick fireplace, casting long, dancing orange shadows across the plush leather sofa and the massive oak desk positioned near the window. Derek guided her to the sofa, gently pressing on her shoulder until she sat down. He disappeared briefly into the kitchen, returning moments later with a tray bearing fresh fruit, artisan cheeses, and two freshly poured glasses of rich red wine. He set the tray on the low coffee table in front of her, then sat down on the sofa right beside her. He didn't leave a professional space between them; his long leg pressed against hers, his broad shoulder brushing her arm as he picked up his glass. "To new beginnings," Derek said, his voice quiet as he raised his glass toward her. Amelia picked up her glass, her eyes locking onto his over the rim. "To new beginnings." They clinked their glasses softly, the crystal ringing through the quiet room. Amelia took a small sip, the complex, smoky flavor of the wine warming her throat. For the next hour, the intense romantic atmosphere settled into a warm, intoxicating intimacy. Derek walked her through the acquisition contracts for the lake estate and the surrounding nature preserve, his sharp mind analyzing every clause with effortless brilliance. But while his mind remained sharp, his physical presence remained overwhelmingly close. His arm rested along the back of the sofa behind her, his fingers occasionally brushing against the nape of her neck or twirling a stray lock of her hair as they read through the pages together. "You really love this property, don't you?" Amelia asked, setting the contract down on her knees and turning to face him. Derek looked out toward the dark glass window, where the night had fully fallen over the lake. "It’s the only place where I can hear myself think," he confessed quietly. "In the city, everyone wants something from me. My time, my money, my influence. People lie to get close to me. They wear masks." Amelia felt a sudden pang of empathy in her chest. She reached out, laying her small hand over his knee. "Is that why you keep everyone so far away?" Derek turned his gaze back to her, his expression growing guarded and solemn. "Eight years ago, I trusted someone. A woman named Victoria, and a man I considered my closest business partner, Marcus. I thought... I thought we were building something real. I was foolish enough to let my guard down." He paused, his jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line as old memories resurfaced. Amelia kept her hand steady on his knee, silently offering her presence, waiting for him to continue at his own pace. "They spent fourteen months systematically funneling proprietary assets out of my first logistics firm," Derek explained, his voice low and icy. "When I finally uncovered the paper trail, Victoria wasn't even repentant. She looked me in the eye and told me that no one could ever truly love a man as cold and demanding as me. She said she only stayed long enough to secure her settlement." "Derek..." Amelia whispered, her heart aching for the young, vulnerable man who had been so cruelly betrayed. "That's terrible. She was wrong. She used you because she couldn't comprehend your value." "She was right about one thing," Derek said, his eyes searching Amelia’s face with intense scrutiny. "I became cold. I locked my heart behind iron walls. I swore I would never let another human being hold that kind of leverage over me again. I turned Blackwood Enterprises into a fortress, and I became its warden." He reached out, taking her hand from his knee and lifting it to his lips, pressing a soft kiss against her knuckles. "And then you walked into my office six months ago," he murmured, his voice softening into that velvety baritone that undid her completely. "You were quiet, brilliant, and completely untainted by the greed that surrounds this city. You looked at me not as a billionaire or a target, but simply as a man. And for the first time in eight years, the fortress began to crack." Tears pricked at the corners of Amelia’s eyes. The vulnerability in his confession washed away any lingering doubts she had about her place in his world. He wasn't just a fantasy hero; he was a flawed, hurt man who had chosen to trust her with the darkest wound of his past. "I'm not Victoria, Derek," Amelia said, her voice ringing with absolute sincerity. She leaned forward, placing her palm against his sharp cheekbone, feeling the slight rough stubble beneath her fingers. "I don't care about your money, your cars, or your empire. I see you. The real you. And I'm not going anywhere." Derek closed his eyes, leaning his face into the warm palm of her hand as if absorbing her strength. When he opened his eyes again, the darkness of his past had vanished, replaced by an overwhelming flame of pure, unadulterated passion. "I know," he whispered. He leaned in, capturing her lips in another deep, breathless kiss. This time, there was no hesitation, no holding back. He shifted his weight, pulling her up and into his lap. Amelia gasped as she found herself straddling his thighs, her skirt riding up slightly, her arms wrapping securely around his neck as he deepened the kiss, his hands gripping her waist with possessive intensity. The fire in the hearth crackled loudly, throwing warm light over their intertwined bodies as the line between boss and lover faded completely into the dark, sweet sanctuary of the night.
