The First Meeting

Alexander Steele walked into the central tower, raindrops dripping from his coat. He coldly scanned the room, and employees immediately lowered their heads, burying themselves in their work. No one dared to provoke the domineering CEO at that moment. The elevator doors opened, and Alexander stepped inside, pressing the button for the top floor. As the elevator ascended, his thoughts lingered on the girl named Emily Carter. Her disheveled yet determined eyes had piqued his interest unexpectedly. The elevator reached the top floor, and as the doors opened, a group of senior executives greeted him. They stood in a row, professional smiles plastered on their faces. Alexander ignored them and strode directly towards the conference room. The meeting began promptly, and he handled each agenda item with cold efficiency, wasting no time. Yet, throughout the meeting, he found his attention occasionally drifting back to the image of that girl. He forced himself to focus on the matters at hand, but the unease within him refused to be completely quelled. After the meeting, Alexander returned to his office and found a report on his desk. It was from his secretary, Michael Black, detailing Emily Carter's background. Alexander picked up the report and began to read. Emily Carter, 22, was a student from a poor background but fiercely independent. She studied at the city university, supporting herself through part-time jobs and scholarships. She had no family, having grown up in an orphanage, and relied on part-time jobs and charity organizations to cover her living expenses, facing life's challenges alone. Alexander absorbed the details of her background, but a complex emotion stirred within him. This woman's eyes were uncannily similar to his own. "Michael." He pressed the intercom on his desk,"Arrange a meeting with Miss Carter. I want to apologize to her in person." "Yes, sir." Michael responded promptly and began making arrangements. Meanwhile, Emily was waiting for a full-body checkup in her hospital room. She looked around, realizing it was her first time in such a high-end hospital room. Growing up, every time she got sick, she would just buy some medicine and cope because she couldn't afford to go to the hospital. The doctors and nurses greeted her with concern, informing her that all her medical expenses were being covered by Mr. Alexander Steele, and handed her a bank card, saying it was her compensation for the accident. Emily looked at the card in her hand and said uneasily, "There can't be too much money in this, right? I don't need much, just the legally mandated compensation." She recalled the man's luxury car. Although she didn't recognize the brand, the extremely comfortable and tasteful interior indicated its high value. He wouldn't... really give her a large sum of money, would he? She couldn't accept that! The nurse responded respectfully, "Miss Carter, we don't know the exact amount. You can check at the bank after you're discharged." Emily, anxious, decided to check the amount as soon as she was discharged. If it exceeded the compensation amount, she would return it immediately. A few days later, Emily received a call from Michael, inviting her to meet at the central tower. She readily accepted the invitation. After all, although Alexander's car had hit her, he had handled the accident very well, and the amount in the bank card was astonishingly large. She needed to return it to him in person to set her mind at ease. After her class, she used her phone's navigation to cycle to the central tower. Her heart was filled with nervousness and anticipation. It was her first time stepping into such a grand building, one she had only seen on TV where various important meetings were held. I need to work hard; one day, I want to work in a place as impressive as this! Emily thought. She was guided to the top floor's conference room. Pushing the door open, she found Alexander Steele sitting there, his sharp gaze fixed on her. "Please, have a seat, Miss Carter," he said coldly. Emily took a deep breath and sat down across from him. Alexander observed her for a moment, his expression unreadable. He had seen countless people in his life, but this young woman had an air about her that was different. She was not intimidated by his cold demeanor; instead, she seemed resolute, ready to face whatever he had to say. "I wanted to meet you in person to apologize for the accident," Alexander began, his voice devoid of warmth. "It was an unfortunate incident, and I am taking full responsibility." Emily nodded, her hands gripping the edge of her seat. "I appreciate that, Mr. Steele. But there's something I need to discuss with you." Alexander raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And what might that be?" Emily hesitated for a moment, then reached into her bag and pulled out the bank card. "This... the amount of money you deposited into this card is far more than what is required for compensation. I cannot accept this." Alexander's eyes flicked to the card and back to Emily's face. "That money is not just compensation. It's also to ensure you have no further inconvenience from the accident. Consider it a gesture of goodwill." "I understand, but it's too much," Emily insisted. "I can't take it. It's not right." Alexander leaned back in his chair, studying her. "Miss Carter, let me be clear. I do not do things halfway. When I decide to take care of something, I see it through completely. That includes ensuring your well-being after the accident." Emily felt a mix of frustration and gratitude. "But I don't want to be indebted to you. I prefer to handle things on my own terms." Alexander's lips curved into a slight smile, the first hint of warmth she had seen from him. "Your independence is admirable, Miss Carter. But consider this: sometimes accepting help is not a sign of weakness, but a recognition of the interconnectedness of our lives." Emily was taken aback by his words. She had always prided herself on her self-reliance, but Alexander's perspective made her reconsider. "Thank you, Mr. Steele," she said softly. "I'll think about what you've said." "Good," Alexander replied, his tone returning to its usual coldness. "Now, if there is nothing else, you are free to go. But remember, if you ever need anything, do not hesitate to reach out." Emily nodded and stood up, clutching the bank card. As she left the room, she couldn't help but feel that this encounter had left a profound impact on her. Alexander Steele was not just a cold, domineering CEO; there was more to him, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. As she cycled back to her modest apartment, Emily's mind was a whirl of thoughts. She had entered the central tower with the intention of returning the money and closing this chapter, but instead, she left with a sense of connection she hadn't expected. Meanwhile, Alexander sat back in his chair, his mind drifting back to the image of Emily Carter. There was something about her resilience and determination that struck a chord within him. He was used to dealing with power and wealth, but Emily represented a different kind of strength, one that intrigued him deeply. As he gazed out of the window at the city below, Alexander Steele realized that this encounter with Emily Carter might just be the beginning of something he had never anticipated.
