Guilt

464 Words
Sarah watched as Orion tended to Luna's injuries, her heart heavy with guilt. She knew she had caused this, and she didn't know how to make things right. She sat down and closed her eyes, trying to focus on her feelings. The darkness she had felt earlier seemed to be lurking just beneath the surface, and she knew she needed to confront it. She took a deep breath and pushed her fear aside, trying to open herself up to the feelings that had been driving her. As she delved into the darkness, she began to understand what was happening to her. Sarah realized that she had been feeling threatened by Luna's presence. Luna was so bright and cheerful, and she always seemed to know what to do or say in any situation. Sarah had always felt like she was in the shadow of her more confident friend, and it had made her feel inadequate. But as she delved deeper into her feelings, she realized that it wasn't just Luna that she felt threatened by. It was everyone and everything. She felt like she could never measure up, and that everyone was judging her. And that made her feel afraid and jealous. Orion and Luna both froze as they heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. They looked at each other, their eyes wide with alarm. Orion set Luna down gently and slowly stood up, stepping away from her. He held out his arms in a defensive posture, prepared for whatever might come out of the bushes. "Hello?" he called out, his voice cracking with fear. "Who's there?" There was a moment of silence, and then a small, furry head poked out from the bushes. It was a little brown fox, with bright green eyes and a bushy tail. The fox regarded them both with a curious expression, then began to shimmer and change. Its features grew longer and more angular, and soon it was no longer a fox at all. In its place stood a young man, with red hair and freckles, and the same bright green eyes as the fox. He looked at Orion and Luna, and smiled. "Hello!" he said, in a soft, gentle voice. "Don't worry, I'm not here to hurt you. The young man took a step towards the others, still smiling. "My name is Rhys," he said. "I'm so sorry if I scared you. I didn't mean to. I was just exploring the woods when I heard your voices." He looked at Orion and Luna, then at Sarah. "It's nice to meet you all," he said. "May I ask what you're doing out here?" Luna was the first to speak, her voice still a little shaky. "We were...just out for a walk," she said, glancing at Orion and Sarah.
