“Shh,” she whispered in his ear. “I’m here. You’re safe, and I love you. Go back to sleep, sweetheart.” As June combed her fingers through Luke’s hair, she lifted her gaze to meet Ben’s. There was anger and disgust burning in his eyes but not a trace of guilt or shame. Right at that moment, if given the opportunity, June believed he’d gladly kill John McKindel again. She waited until she was sure Luke was asleep before gently laying him down and straightening his blankets.
