June straightened like a shot and stared at him for a moment in confusion as if searching for an explanation. “Luke? What’s wrong?” she finally asked. He opened his mouth to answer, but the bell rang. “I’ll tell you later, Mom.” He scooted out of her classroom before she could quiz him. Being the last day of school, there was nothing pressing going on, and he knew she’d excuse him from being tardy to his next class if he wanted to talk now, but there was no point. There was no way he’d be able to form the words of an explanation. He needed to talk to Carol first, but before he could attempt that, he needed to pull his head back together.
