The Devine effect

2036 Words
Rose A piercing scream resonates throughout the entire pack house. Benson groans beside me, and my eyes instantly open. He yawns before another groan follows. “s**t!” Benson jerks up into a sitting position. He gets out of bed and rushes to grab his clothing while, the entire time, I wonder how I got here when I remember sleeping in Joey’s room. “We have to check out the source of the scream. It might be a rogue attack.” As Alpha, he is always on high alert. He rampages through our closet and throws me a robe. I groan, cursing under my breath, before I put it on. Benson grabs my hand as soon as I wear the robe. He grabs my hand and pulls me along downstairs to the foyer. Jolene sets her eyes on me and glares hard. She looks murderous, like she is ready to kill. “I know you f*****g did this. I know it’s you!” she screams. She begins to walk towards me, but Benson stands in between, keeping us apart. Most of the pack members are out, watching from a distance. “What did I do, Jolene?” I ask with a lazy expression. “You bleached my dress.” She lifts the black dress in the air, showing me the parts that are stained white. “I didn’t do that. Do you have any proof that it was me?” I ask her with a raised brow. “…” “So you don’t have proof? Do you know that accusing people of what they didn’t do is a crime?” “Who else could have bleached the dress if not you? Just because I asked Alpha Benson if you could give the dress to me. Luna Rose, you have plenty of dresses to choose from.” She wipes her eyes. Her voice is shaky. “First of all, I didn’t do that, and it’s not nice to take something that doesn’t belong to you. Didn’t your mother teach you that?” I ask, my tone harsh. I glare at her, and she stares at me with indifference. I hear a few gasps, but I don’t care. Benson turns around and glares at me. His eyes are slowly painting black. “Rose, could this have only been you?” I raise a brow, laughing. “Are you serious right now? The dress that she is calling hers is mine after all.” Benson sighs, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “I told you to give this dress to Jolene because it’s not your type anyway. I can’t have my Luna wearing such a scandalous dress,” he says, and I scoff. “It doesn’t matter how much you pin this on me. The fact is that I didn’t bleach the dress,” I say. “Then what about your dresses? How come they are fine?” she asks. I huff and motion for the maid to bring my dresses over. “I haven’t even checked my dresses since they were delivered.” The dresses arrive, and just like hers, mine are bleached too. “You see, your dress wasn’t the only special one. So I don’t know what you are on about.” Jolene’s eyes widen as she stares at the dresses. Her eyes shift, and I see how she sets her jaw straight. “But…” “Like I said, I didn’t bleach the dresses,” I tell her in my calmest voice. She throws her hands in the air, and Benson steps in. “I will get to the bottom of this,” Benson says. His glare doesn’t wear down; if anything, he looks more angry. Then he turns to Jolene and instantly softens. “We will look for another dress. You don’t have to cry,” Benson assures Jolene. I shake my head at the display and turn around. I head to Joey’s room and find that he is still sleeping this morning, so I give him a soft kiss before I start my day. I head back to the bedroom and find Benson. He still looks angry. “I know you bleached those dresses,” he says, bringing up the issue, and I roll my eyes. If I got a penny for every time Benson has made me roll my eyes, I would be rich enough to bribe the council to break our bond. “If I provide you with evidence to show that I didn’t burn the dresses, what will you do?” I ask. “I will forgive you…” “I don’t want your forgiveness; it’s not necessary to me. What I want is money. If I prove that I didn’t bleach the dresses, you are going to give me $500,000.” His eyes jerk wide. “That is a lot of money, Rose,” he says, raking his hand through his hair. “And you are an Alpha. I would have demanded over a million, but I settled for $500,000. And the other thing I want is Jolene punished in front of the whole pack—fifty lashes on her back for accusing me. She doesn’t hold any power in this pack, and it’s high time she learned her place. I am the Luna, and I deserve to be treated as such.” “That punishment is too big. Jolene isn’t fully healed yet; she can’t afford to be injured.” The way he jumps at the opportunity to defend Jolene is laughable. He doesn’t even notice how quickly he defends her and takes her side. “If you can’t let her take those fifty lashes, then it’s best you prepare $1.5 million. You don’t have to tell me now what you have decided, but you can on the day that I present proof that I didn’t bleach those dresses.” My confidence comes from the fact that I didn’t touch those dresses. If anything, not even Arlene touched those dresses. Someone surprisingly beat us to it. In fact, no one will even guess who bleached those dresses. “Okay, I have heard,” he says and comes closer to me. He leans in close to my face, his lips aiming for mine, and I give him my cheek. His soft lips peck my cheek, and he pulls away quickly. “You won’t kiss your mate?” “I am tired. Let’s do this another time.” I force a smile, then rush to the bathroom to take a shower. When I am done and ready, I go to check up on Joey, and he is still sleeping. It’s not like Joey to still be asleep at this time. I place my hand on his forehead, and it’s burning up. Panic rises, and I don’t wait. I carry him out of bed and rush to the front door. “What’s wrong?” Benson asks. “His body is burning up. He must be sick.” “Wolves don’t get sick,” Benson says, and I swear I want to slap him. “Are you trying to use Joey to get my attention?” “Are you…” I pause, choosing my words carefully. Insulting him at a time like this will get me in trouble, and it will later affect Joey. “Serious?” “What else can it be if not for attention? I know it’s because I didn’t support you on the dress issue, and now you want to use Joey,” he says, sounding as arrogant as he is. “Joey is a child. He is not an adult like you. He doesn’t even have his wolf; of course, he can get sick.” He chuckles. “Why are you such a liar? You have been lying a lot these days.” Arguing with him will only make Joey’s condition worse. The moment I see Jolene by the corner making her way here, I bolt for the door. I don’t have time for nonsense. The Beta sees me carrying Joey. He doesn’t question me, only guides me to his car and drives off to the pack hospital. The doctor is ready to receive me, as Beta Ian made some calls on our way. Joey is taken to the ICU, where he is examined. They tell me to wait, and Beta Ian accompanies me. After some hours, the doctor walks out. “I don’t think I can manage to help your son. We have put him on some meds, but we can’t find the source of the problem. The most competent doctor for this situation is the legendary Divine Doctor.” The Divine Doctor? I have only ever heard about him once. They say he is able to heal almost all illnesses with just the touch of his hand. “But how do I reach him? Is he reachable?” I ask. I don’t think any of us have reached him. The doctor takes out his phone and gives me his number. “You can call him on this line, and how you speak to him will determine if he can come over or not. I heard he is nearby, helping some neighboring pack.” I nod and quickly dial his line. It rings a few times before the doctor picks up. “You reached the Divine Doctor. How may I be of help to you?” A deep voice resonates through the phone, and its raw rumble sends a shiver through my body. “My son—he is sick. I don’t know what’s wrong. The doctors here can’t find the main problem.” “I thought you would introduce yourself first.” He chuckles, and that chuckle sends a shock to my dead feelings. I breathe in. “I am Rose Patel, Luna of the Grandmoon Pack. My son is sick and needs your help. He has a fever and hasn’t woken up today.” My voice cracks over the phone. “Grandmoon, huh? Give me a few hours. I will be there.” “Hours?” My voice comes out louder than it should. “It will take me hours to get there. Besides, I also have patients to attend to before I can rush there,” he states and cuts the line before I can say anything more. I guess I don’t have a choice. I look at the doctor. “I can keep him stable until then, and you are free to go and see your son now.” I rush to the ward, and he is lying on the bed, with only the slow beating of his heart and shallow breathing to show that he is alive. I look at my young boy. He is so young to be going through this. I grab his hands and whisper words of affirmation to him. Hours tick by until the door opens. At the door stands the most breathtaking man. He is so tall and so handsome. We lock eyes, and I can’t look away. My heart beats faster than it did when I heard his voice. My body feels activated, only realizing now how long it has been since I was f****d, since I moaned while someone had his face between my legs. The sight of the doctor reminds me of all the s****l activities I have been missing out on. “Hi, you must be Luna Rose. I am Lysander, the legendary doctor who will be attending to your son.” “Uh…” I keep staring. I have never seen a man this handsome before. He smiles, and the line on his cheek deepens, defining his face and making him look even more handsome. “Should I repeat myself?” he asks, and damn that voice. I didn’t know a voice could be that sweet and deep. It makes me want to listen to it every single day. Jerking out of the trance, I blink, and he still has that dashing smile plastered on his lips. “Uh… no… no. I heard you loud and clear. It’s just…” “I know. I get that a lot. It’s the Divine effect,” he smirks.
