Early the next morning, Amaka woke up excitedly.
Today was her first official day at her place of primary assignment.
She quickly put on her NYSC khaki uniform, checked herself in the mirror, and headed to the living room to wait for her uncle.
A few minutes later, her uncle came out of his room, adjusting his tie.
Amaka: “Uncle, good morning, sir.”
Amaka’s Uncle: “Good morning, Amaka. How are you doing? And how was your night?”
Amaka: “My night was fine. Thank you, Uncle.”
Her uncle looked at her from head to toe.
Amaka’s Uncle: “I can see you’re already prepared,” he said while knotting his tie.
Amaka: “Yes, Uncle.”
Amaka’s Uncle: “Okay, Amaka. Go wait for me in the car.”
He handed her his briefcase.
Amaka: “Okay, Uncle.”
She collected the briefcase and headed outside to the car.
A few minutes later, Amaka and her uncle were on their way to her school.
Amaka suddenly remembered something.
Amaka: “Uncle, please don’t forget the phone,” she said playfully.
Her uncle laughed.
Amaka’s Uncle: “Yes, my dear. Immediately you get back, we’ll go to the phone store and get you one. Or perhaps I should just get it for you. Would that be okay?”
Amaka: “Yes, Uncle. Please, I need an iPhone,” she said with a smile.
Amaka’s Uncle: “An iPhone? You want to become one of Lagos big babes, abi?”
They both laughed as he continued driving.
About two hours later, they entered Ajegunle.
The roads were rough, with several potholes and puddles along the way.
Eventually, they arrived at Amaka’s school.
Amaka got down from the car as her uncle parked and stepped out.
They entered the school together and went straight to the principal’s office to submit her file.
After everything was sorted out, her uncle called her aside.
He brought out some money and handed it to her.
Amaka’s Uncle: “Take this. Just in case you need to buy anything. And don’t hesitate to call me when you close.”
Amaka: “Okay, Uncle. Thank you.”
She collected the money and smiled.
She walked her uncle out of the school and watched as he headed back to his car.
As he drove away, Amaka stood there for a moment, watching the car disappear from sight.
She took a deep breath.
Finally, she was on her own.
Her first day in Ajegunle had officially begun.
