After escorting her uncle out of the school, Amaka went back inside.
The principal assigned her to teach Social Studies in SS3.
Amaka: “Okay, sir.”
The principal nodded, and they both headed towards the classroom.
As soon as they entered, all the students stood up to greet them.
Students: “Good morning, sir!”
Principal: “Good morning, everyone. You can sit down.”
As Amaka looked around the classroom, her eyes suddenly landed on someone familiar.
Tony.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Tony?
She stared at him in disbelief.
Tony was one of her students.
After the students finished greeting them, the principal turned towards the class.
Principal: “Everyone, I want you to meet your new Social Studies teacher. She will be taking you from now on, so I expect all of you to give her the respect she deserves.”
He paused and looked around the classroom.
Principal: “And I don’t want to hear any complaints from her about any of you. Is that clear?”
Students: “Yes, sir!”
The principal nodded.
Principal: “Good. Now, everyone should introduce themselves.”
One after another, the students stood up and introduced themselves.
Amaka tried her best to concentrate, but she could barely focus.
She was already nervous about when it would get to Tony’s turn.
Then finally…
Tony: “My name is Tony…”
Their eyes met.
Tony smiled.
Amaka’s heart began beating even faster.
She quickly looked away.
After everyone had introduced themselves, the principal took Amaka to the office where she would be staying and left her there.
Amaka sat down behind the desk.
For a few moments, she was completely lost in thought.
She kept thinking about the students in the classroom.
But one particular student kept coming to her mind.
Tony.
How could Tony be one of my students?
She remembered the previous day.
The way he had helped her.
The way he had given her his number.
And how she had secretly thought he was cute.
She was so deep in thought that she didn’t notice when someone entered the office.
Tony: “Ma.”
Amaka didn’t respond.
Tony tapped her gently.
Tony: “Ma.”
Amaka suddenly came back to her senses.
She looked up and froze.
It was Tony.
Tony: “We’re supposed to have Social Studies now,” he said with a smile.
Amaka stared at him.
Amaka: “Why are you here? What are you doing here? I thought you were…”
She stammered, completely confused.
Tony interrupted her.
Tony: “Yes, I know what’s going through your mind.”
He smiled.
Tony: “We have a lot to talk about later. But for now, can you kindly come and teach us? We’re having your class now.”
He turned around and walked away.
Amaka remained seated for a few seconds, staring at the door.
Amaka: “God, why me?”
She covered her face with her hands.
Amaka: “What kind of life is this? How can I be crushing on a guy and later find out he is one of my students?”
She shook her head in disbelief.
Amaka: “So that means I’m crushing on my student?”
She looked frightened by the thought.
Quickly, she gathered her books from the table and headed towards Tony’s classroom.
As soon as she entered, all the students stood up.
Students: “Good morning, ma!”
Amaka stood in front of the class, trying desperately to compose herself.
But somewhere inside her mind, one thought kept repeating itself.
Tony is my student.
