Her uncle nodded and started the car.
They drove away from the school.
As they were heading home, her uncle brought out a brand-new iPhone 12 Pro Max in pink.
Amaka’s face immediately brightened.
Amaka: Ahhh! Uncle, thank you so much!
She excitedly began unboxing the iPhone while her uncle smiled.
Uncle: Thank God.
He continued driving as Amaka admired her new phone.
When they got home, Mrs Anita was already standing at the gate waiting for them.
Immediately Amaka came down from the car, she greeted her.
Amaka: Good evening, ma.
Mrs Anita: How are you doing, Amaka? And how was your first day today?
She asked with a fake smile.
Amaka: I’m fine, Aunty. My first day at school was okay.
She smiled happily.
Amaka’s uncle came out of the car and went inside while they followed him.
At the living room, Mrs Anita had already served food at the dining table.
Amaka was surprised because this was the first time Mrs Anita had actually cooked for her since she arrived at the house.
She went into her room to charge her new phone and later came back to the dining table.
Exactly at 7 p.m., they all sat down and started eating.
Mrs Anita: Amaka, I noticed you were very happy when you came back today.
Amaka: Yes, Aunty. I really had a great day.
Mrs Anita: So gist me. Did you make any new friends today?
Amaka: Not really. Today was just my first day.
Her uncle cleared his throat.
Uncle: Let’s eat in peace, please.
They all became quiet and continued enjoying their food.
Later that same evening, Amaka’s uncle was sleeping in his room because he was exhausted from the day.
Mrs Anita heard the sound of the television from the living room and went to check who was there.
She was surprised to see Amaka making a video with her new iPhone.
Mrs Anita: Amaka, how come you have a new iPhone?
Amaka: Oh, Aunty. Uncle got it for me.
She happily handed the phone to Mrs Anita so she could see it.
Mrs Anita took the iPhone from her hand and looked through it.
Mrs Anita: Wow. It’s really nice.
She handed the phone back to Amaka with a darkened smile.
Her eyes then moved to her own phone, the same phone she had been using for almost a decade.
Mrs Anita: Amaka, when you’re done, turn off the TV. I’m going to bed.
She walked away.
Amaka: Yes, Aunty.
Mrs Anita entered the bedroom and saw her husband lying on the bed.
She stood there for a moment, thinking.
Mrs Anita: So this man went to buy a new iPhone for this girl without even letting me know. And here I am, begging him to change my phone for me since last year.
She shook her head.
Mrs Anita: Hmm. I don’t know what this girl has used on my husband, but we shall see who wins this battle.
She turned off the light and went to bed.
