When Everly got to her office, she hurriedly placed her bag on the table and dashed over to where the office phone was kept, frantically checking the phone to see if there was any message for her from the boss, but there wasn't. She sank on her chair in frustration, dropping the phone and scratching her head, trying to figure out why the people on the ground floor acted the way they did.
"Could it be that they're still discussing what happened yesterday?" Is that what they're still on, me following the CEO to his office?" She questioned herself as a thousand and one thoughts raced through her mind.
"Was the body discovered by someone else?" Perharps The CEO's Pa did not properly carry out the instruction given to him," she slammed her hand fiercely on the table, as the wave of uncertainty ripped her apart.
"And why hasn't he called me or sent for me?" "Why is he ignoring me after such a tense meeting yesterday?" Everly replied with a worried tone in her voice.
"How am I going to get through this now that the body has been discovered?" But the cops should have been here by now, or maybe the body was discovered and no one knows who did it," she buried her face in her palm, her brain burning from overthinking.
As she sat down, swinging her chair in different directions, her mind kept going back to the scenario of yesterday, and she was trying to remember if she had left anything behind at the warehouse that might point her out as a suspect.
Devan, her boyfriend, stormed into her office, as she was deep in thought, overwhelmed with pain and betrayal.
"How could you do such a thing Everly?" As he stepped into the office, he yelled.
She jumped to her feet, panic in her eyes, thinking that what she had hoped would never happen had finally happened. "Devan," she said, perplexed.
"You are getting married to Leo Walton?" He questioned rhetorically, his fury visible in his eyes.
"What? "No!" Everly yelled, fully stunned to her bones, but relieved that what she thought had happened wasn't what was happening.
"No?" He asked, his brows furrowed, a frown visible on his face.
"I meant yes," she recollected, not wanting to show that the news was also surprising to her so that he doesn't find out that it is a contract marriage.
"You have been seeing Leo all this time behind my back?"
"Don't act all righteous Devan, you were also cheating on me," she said as she walked back to her seat.
"Cheating on you?" His anger gave way to astonishment and perplexity as he inquired.
"Oh come on Devan, don't give me that look, I know Brielle is carrying your child" she said in response.
"Was that why you left my office before I returned yesterday?" Was that also the reason you stopped answering my phone calls and responding to my messages?"
"That isn't the issue right now. Also, I can't believe you were having an affair with my best friend behind my back"
"For crying out loud Everly, that was a one-night stand, there was nothing attached to it, we were both drunk" Devan went on to say.
"A one-night stand with my best friend," she exclaimed, laughing heartily.
"That wasn't enough reason for you to jump onto a marriage train with Leo. I made a mistake and you would have asked me for an explanation at least before making such a rash decision," he remarked.
A rash decision is what you call it? Well, the situation already explained itself clearly to me, there was no need to want to listen to your explanation."
"Are you really going to throw away everything we once had for Leo?" Devan inquired, but Everly remained silent.
"You know what, if that's the decision you've made, then we're done here," Devan stated solemnly before exiting the office.
POV THE GROUND FLOOR OF THE OFFICE BUILDING
Devan dashed down the stairs towards Leo, who was ready to leave the office.
"Leo Walton," he cried out, his voice deep and gruesom.
The tremor from the voice brought silence to the room, and everyone turned to face him. Leo came to a standstill and slowly looked back, recognising the voice.
"What a pleasant surprise, brother, finally wanting to talk to me at work," Leo exclaimed, a huge smile on his face. Everyone present began to murmur among themselves as their boss addressed Devan as his brother.
"You have always wanted to be in charge, I left everything for you, the empire, the family and I chose a quiet life. What more do you still want from me?" Devan replied as he approached him slowly.
"You were never a part of the family, and you were never supposed to be a part of the empire from the beginning," Leo said, his smile gone and his voice grave.
"I'm a son of the Walton family, by flesh and blood. I deserve to be part of everything, but you wanted every single thing to yourself. Why have you chosen to collect everything from me?" Devan yelled angrily.
"An illegitimate Walton son, that's who you are. By the way, what do I possibly have to collect? Even though you are a little older, the empire was never your birthright," Leo replied calmly.
"The woman you chose to get married to, Everly Carter, is mine."
"Is she?" Leo chuckled and inquired cynically.
Devan remained mute as he stared at him, stunned. "Now you know, I am giving you the opportunity to renounce your marriage to her," he eventually said.
"It's too late, brother, she's now mine," Leo stated as he turned to go.
Devan instantly went towards him, attempting to bring him back with his other hand in the air ready to punch him, but he wasn't quick enough, and Leo's bodyguard, who had been standing alongside Leo the entire time, drew Devan back and pushed him roughly on the floor.
"Enough," Leo yelled as his bodyguard yanked Devan from the floor, his fist clutched tightly, ready to assault him.
