As Darkness Closes In Paige Vest Accentuated by tendrils of cloud, the sky is a lovely shade of blue that brings to mind the wing of the injured bluebird I found last year. I’d have nursed it back to health but Daddy stomped, his boot crushing its fragile body. I stared blankly at blood on blue feathers, then screamed. I didn’t feel Daddy hit me that time; I woke later, sprawled on the grass, and vomited beside the dead bird. As darkness closes in.... I begin to feel cold as I sink. I gaze upward, the blue of the wavery sky deepening to azure. I didn’t know that azure was a color until I first accompanied Lizbeth home from school and admired the blue paint in her room. She said it was azure and I said it sure looked blue to me. She laughed and kissed me. I was surprised but thrilled;
