Incurable romantic

Miriam He said goodbye to me so fast. That kiss felt like he was trying to apologise for leaving me. I was feeling sad...maybe it was because he didn't tell Diego to f**k off. But if he had done that, I would have felt angry because I needed to be the one to handle Diego. "How dare he kiss you? You just met! And you let him?!" he all but raged about it. "It doesn't concern you! There was never anything serious between us. We kissed once when we said goodbye last night, and I can see now it was a mistake! Please leave me alone, Diego! I refuse to be just another one-night stand for you!" "But you mean so much more to me than that! I like you. Believe me, when I say my intentions with you are serious!" "How is it serious when we can never have a relationship? I'm not a wolf and can never be your mate." "You don't know. Some alphas have human mates." "Yes, I do! I don't want to occupy someone else's place. Understand that, please." He looked away and took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "You are right, okay? I'm sorry, I can't force you to like me. But know this, if you are not my fated mate, I will reject whoever that is and be with you." I was so shocked I didn't know what to say... Mafalda didn't hear us; she was too far away, having decided to give us space to talk. "Do you even hear yourself, Diego? You can't do that! It's against your nature." "f**k nature! I make my own rules!" He was utterly enraged. This was the first time I had seen him like this. "Diego, I am not interested in you. That kiss last night resulted from years of friendship and physical attraction only. We have nothing in common, and we are extremely different. You never noticed me before, so why all this flirting since a few months ago? I don't feel that way about you! Just go! I don't want to ruin our friendship anymore if you can call it that!" "Oh, I will go now, but you'll regret that. It won't be the last time we talk about this!" He left, walking to his car and driving away at high speed. Mafalda came running after he left. "What was all that? Are you okay?" "Yes, I am! I am not so sure he is... we disagree on many points of view. So I told him to leave me alone." My friend's face fell. "Oh s**t! I know what we need! Come on..." She grabbed my hand and took me to the beach bar. We sat at the bar, and she ordered a round of double tequila shots. Facing each other, we cling our glasses and bottoms up. For her, it was like drinking water. "Tell me something, be honest! What's going on with you and the new guy? It's not like you chat away with some stranger. Do you... like him?" I was still trying to assimilate the alcohol that burned down my throat. "Why do you ask that?" She wasn't having any of it. There was no dodging the question. "That's not an answer..." "I suppose I like him." "I knew it! He likes you!" "I don't know, and it's weird being near him. I feel different... I feel happy and have this funny feeling in my stomach." "It's called a crush, Miriam. You should know what that means by now." "Yeah, I know; maybe I do have a crush..." "You realise he's a wolf, possibly with a mate?" "He hasn't found his mate yet, but yes, I do, Mafalda, and I don't plan to get in anyone's way." "Maybe you could be his mate?" She offered at the same time, doubting it, and it was all over her face. "I don't want to think that way. My life would get very complicated if I were to be his mate. I would have to put everything on hold to be with him, and you know I want to live for myself. Besides, I'm human, and the chances of that being a possibility are zero to none." with that said, I downed another tequila shot. "I saw that you affect him. If you like him, you could try and get to know him. "So what? We're teens. It's the hormones, plus I doubt he's a virgin like me; he's probably looking for some summer hook-up. Getting to know him will be a problem because I already like him. Now imagine if I fell for him. I'm an incurable romantic, you know me... What's going to happen if I'm not his mate? We are both going to suffer." She shrugged and nodded in understanding. "Yeah, you're right...sorry, I am drunk." We both laughed at that. She was downing cocktails all afternoon with Cody, probably. As we kept laughing loudly, two police officers approached us. "Ladies, can we please see your I.D.?" "Sure thing!" I said enthusiastically. We were both more than happy to show our IDs. It was my first time being asked for an I.D. by the police. "Okay, so both of you are seventeen, but don't you think you had enough? No more alcohol." As he gave us back our I.D., the other one offered. " We don't want more kids drinking more than they can handle today, and it's a lot more work for us. Why don't we take you home? Where do you live?" "We're here for the festival. At the moment, we live in a tent." I said, and Mafalda suppressed a laugh. Realising we were the teens that gave them extra work, they gave an annoyed expression. "All right, we'll drop you at camp then. Come on, ladies." Both of us were embarrassed about having been busted, so we followed them to the car. They drove us to camp and dropped us at the door. It was half past nine, and I was so tired and sludgy. In urgent need of a shower. I took Mafalda to our tent and put her to sleep. She was far drunker than I was. I grabbed my shampoo, toothbrush, and paste and went to the shower. There were simply water hoses hanging from a metal tube along two parallel brick walls. The floor was cemented with drains, and no ceiling was ideal, only for summer. A sign stuck to the wall in red capitals said, 'No nudity, please wear appropriate clothes for showering'. But since it was night and everyone was already done with showers. On their way to bars in town or their tents, I decided to take off my bikini and wash properly. It was a hot evening, and I needed to take all this sweat off my skin. I turned on the water and shed my clothes, letting the lukewarm water wash me. I looked at the sky and felt like singing.
